Howdy, everyone.

I’m not entirely sure if this would be better suited for the “General Discussion” subforum, but given that it concerns my Norn hero’s story, I thought I’d try here first.

I’m a really, really big lore nerd. I have an entire (amateur) novel written for a certain Elven Paladin from another game that covers his story and how he came to where he is.

I’m really excited to be given the chance to do the same for my Guild Wars characters! In fact, I already have a rough outline of how my two main human heroes are linked to their GW1 ancestors; but there’s a problem.

I’d like to create a Norn! Now, I could just create an unrelated Norn hero who stumbles upon my Hall of Monuments – but where’s the fun in that? I’d like there to be some kind of connection – something that links him/her to the past in a meaningful way.

Now, certain elements require a suspension of disbelief (and others are just really cliché!), but here’s what I’ve imagined so far (some minor GW1 spoilers to follow):

  • Ebon Vanguard is recalled from EotN, my GW1 hero along with them after the defeat of the Great Destroyer
  • On the way home, they find the site of a small skirmish
  • Two fallen Norn surrounded by the bodies of their attackers
  • Norn child is crying beneath the body of one of their parents, the body pierced with arrows / claw marks / etc.
  • The Vanguard rescue the child, but do not have a detail available to take him/her back to their people

Through some circumstance or another, the child would be left in the care of my GW1 hero (perhaps given her experience with the Norn during the events of EotN). Depending on the average Norn lifespan (which I have yet to research), my GW2 Norn would likely be the rescued child’s grand child or great-grand child.

I came to an impass though: I can’t decide what family name to give my GW2 Norn.

My original idea was to have the Vanguard name the rescued child in honour of Captain Langmar (ie: Placeholder ______sdottir); but I’ve been unsuccessful in finding any reference to Langmar’s first name. Perhaps use Langmar as a first name? I don’t know.

Given that the child would be raised by humans, I plan that they would adopt the human custom of passing on the last name to their children, so my GW2 hero would have the same last name, though by then, the way to the Shiverpeaks would be open again and this character would be raised in proper Norn fashion – more or less.

So, tl;dr: I need to figure out a family (last) name for my Norn, preferably something in tribute to Captain Langmar or the Ebon Vanguard. ____sdottir not required, but something Norn-esque preferred.

Don’t worry if you don’t have any suggestions – I’m open to discussion and ideas, too!

It may all sound a little Mary Sue-ish, but these stories are important to me and help me really connect with the game world, so I hope I can create something special from this. Thanks for looking!

So they just keep the kid? What if he had relatives looking for him? Who now assume he’s dead somewhere? You just kidnap him and keep him? I hope your GW1 character lives somewhere with lots of high ceilings.

And he never goes in search of other Norns when he’s grown? To figure out his past, find out who his parents were, be with people like himself instead of being surrounded by humans all the time (don’t tell me he didn’t get made fun of growing up), or to find someone to build a family with? Maybe all that happens and he just moves back with the Norns and his X generation grandkid lives pretty much a normal Norn life.

A lot simpler to just make a Norn who’s close buds with your GW1 character, who stay in contact through the generations, and both their offspring grow up visiting and seeing each other in a family-like way. No reason why they can’t be named in memory of these close human friends. Not as dramatic, but there you go.

The general idea in my head was that the child had no family left. I’d suspect they all died doing Norn things.

They probably would have been made fun of, but this is the grandfather/mother of the actual character I’m trying to name – I’m just trying to sort out a reason why they may have a human-themed family name.

The rescued child would return to Norn lands by the time they’re grown – the only reason the Vanguard takes him/her with them is because they’re en route back to Ascalon and leaving a child to freeze to death would be kind of rude – so their children (the GW2 character) are raised in traditional Norn fashion.
