Midnight Mayhem
Elementalist on Gunnar’s Hold
My personal story quest on my thief is called breaking blade.
I have to defend a tavern which goes fine, and than I have to kill a mob called Doc Howler. This mob is practically unkillable to me at my current level….
Any tips?
Without knowing your class/traits/level there’s not much I can say, other than the generic tips:
- Make sure your gear is up to spec
- Durability is usually much more effective than sheer damage in story steps—bosses are almost always veteran level
- You will get levelled down to the story step level if you want to outlevel the step and try again, but new skills/traits/etc. that you’ve gained access to will help
There was a thread which talks about this portion of the Personal Story. It also has developer input (from Jeffrey Vaughn above):

Hopefully you can get some tips/ideas from there, as people who play thieves provide input as well.
It doesn’t seem many people found Doc Howler easy either.
Maybe you can invite people to join you on your Personal Story? If you see me online, you can invite me and I can help you with it.
I can help dps and remove conditions.

I tested and I can’t handle a veteran mob either let’s work on some durability …
I would be glad to help you out , I play on GoM (which I help people as much as I can) but with guesting I should be able to help you. Look me up.
The problem isn’t with the player, the problem is with the mob. It is an elite mob that has unavoidable autoattacks and constantly stacks poisons on the player which last for 30 seconds that are immediately reapplied after they are removed. Anet either needs to severely reduce this mob’s hp or severely reduce the mob’s overall DPS (I am talking a 50-60% reduction here).
If you choose the path to save your friend instead of the city, your friend can help migrate the damage. The boss is beatable and try to use the terrain as your advantage. It was hard beating the boss as a badly geared level 9 mesmer back then before the BWE2 nerf

“Doc Howler” — enough said. I’ve done most (all?) of the personal story arcs for all races up to level 10 and this one is the most difficult by a significant margin. In fact, it has the distinction of being the only segment of the personal story (aside from the final dungeon part) that I’ve ever had to call in help to complete.
I haven’t read the thread you linked yet, but IMO that NPC needs some serious re-tuning.
To repeat what I said in the other thread:
I do think the duration on Howler’s poison can be reduced a bit—it pulses up to 5x for 5s of duration each pulse (so it can apply 25s of poison total) but the 5 pulses appear to take place VERY quickly, making it next to impossible to avoid the whole hit. That being said, I’ve managed to beat this with a L10 thief, elementalist, and engineer, so I don’t think it’s “impossible.” To be fair, I’ve obviously played this game a lot, but I really don’t use any crazy dev tricks or cheats when I test for difficulty. I found Elixer B to be quite helpful for taking Howler down, since it boosts your damage and hurts her every time she hits you.

I can’t find Elixir B on my Thief either. Can anyone kind enough to help me point it out?

Elixir B is engineer skill or something…

Have you considered “Prayer to Kormir”? I mean I know it’s fashionable to hate her but when she removes 3 conditions in one shot I’d at least send a kind word that way.

Not to discard your experience, but there comes a time when enough players are having a really hard time with a LOW-LEVEL quest, and one npc in particular, that there seems to be a suggestion to take a good hard look at this one particular situation and make a slight change.
Of course, if Arenanet only wants to create a game that discourages new players, this particular npc is a great attempt. I realize you did the quest and succeeded, but you DO have many more playing hours than a new level 10 player.
Find a person that hasn’t played MMOs or video games hardcore…have them play a thief and have them run the quest…especially if the sacrificed Quinn. Watch their reaction. Frustration will set in eventually.
GW2 is a fun game…except for Doc. Don’t turn off new players by keeping her hella hard.
just my 2 cents
Arguably the dev is not able to empathize. Oh well.
Kill Doc and move on
