Personal story as a Elementalist vs Guardian...
I very much agree with you, even though I havent been playing the Ele much now, I played a Ele all through Betas and I do dislike the set up of the Ele in a way with having, to be out of combat_go into INV_ or Hero menu_ to switch weapons… Anyway the skills on the ele are great and at times the Ele can be really dificult to keep alive but there is a price to playing a powerful professtion, yet the Guardian and Necromancer is more OP than Elementalist, so some things about the Ele is really unfair but it has so many skills, but each atunement is just kindah changeing those skills a little…
The Elementalist seems to be the most chalengeing to Trait and use the skills without getting any blows.
I play an Elementalist main, and currently leveling a Guardian (70 at the moment), and yes, Guardian is a ton easier than Elementalist. With the Elementalist I had some trouble on some quests, and had me die some times. As Guardian I barely ever come close to dying, and that’s with using much less skills and less dodging than I had to do on my Elementalist.
There’s a few quests which heavily favor ranged classes. But in all the rest guardian was easiest. Generally guardian > ranger > necro > mesmer > ele for the characters I’ve played since release. (In personal story, other times it’s totally different). I had a really hard time with thief in the betas, but I can’t say for sure what’s been adjusted.
Some of it though is really understanding how to trigger next phases of the story. i.e. should I kill everyone or is that impossible and I need to run through? Mesmer generally didn’t have the dps to outkill anything with respawn. Ele would be fine if there were a few NPCs to “tank” the mobs and useless solo.
