What’s your profession? What weapons are you using? What level are you? What level is your gear? Specifically, which creatures are giving you trouble? I really need more information to be able to look at it.
I was a level 8 thief and was using a dagger and pistol. I had not bought any armor and was using only what I picked up in battle. After meeting Gnarl Snagtooth I had trouble with the flame legion waves that come out. The first wave comes out without any kind of warning and knocks me back taking most of my health before I can get a single blow in. The fire imps are especially strong and at one point it was just me and 7-8 enemies. You have no chance to revive allies.
It was even worse at the end trying to kill the boss. He is hard enough alone, but always had 5-6 fire imps around and it seemed like more of them spawned as that battle went on. Of course by the time I got to the boss my armor was gone because I had been defeated so many times earlier. Your allies fall quickly here too and you have no chance of ever reviving them.

You should at minimum update your equipment with the karma vendors. I think anet needs to make this more clear that karma should be used every time you can use it to make you more powerful. As you finish a heart check the vendor if he sells something that would make you stronger. If you are running around with a level 1-3 gear on a level 8 its going to severely make you weaker. level 6-8 gear is pretty much twice as strong, and even stronger if its blue.
Anet doesn’t stress karma vendors that much. I think they should.

I’m not sure but I may have had 1 or 2 pieces of armor from those karma vendors. I do know that later in the game completing the hearts is vital. I’ve picked up many armor pieces and great weapons that way.
Also you can get really cheap level 8 gear from the auction house. Much cheaper than the white gear sold by the merchant, which is lower stats. Try grabbing a full set. Don’t forget the weapons.
Afterwards, if you are still having trouble, concisely describe exactly where you were and what you fighting. And, if possible, what about those enemies or encounters made them hard.
Anet has done a lot of re-balancing post release. They do listen if you give constructive feedback.
I understand his problem, i like to start the game without using the trade broker to buy gear. But in lower levels the gear drop rate is very minimum.. It is so hard to find a single piece of equipment for your toon, but on lvl 80 you find greens every 10 seconds.. but then they are useless.
I think lower lvl zones need a better gear drop rate, so a new player can also learn and get new weapons while they lvl. Most new players dont know there is a TP or dont even know where he is.
I have encoutered this with my brother ( who doesnt play much MMO ) he had no idea what weapon he should use, and was equiping a bow from lvl 5 to 25 and i told him he could use other weapons, and that he could use the TP to get new gear every 10 lvls.

My friend says he is fed up with the constant drops of green and blues that takes up his bag-space, in other words he thinks it’s to easy to get equipment drops.
My experience with playing my first char was quite easy but I imagine that that was becouse I was duoing the whole time, anyway I played just as OP and only used the Equipment I found so maby one advice would be you could always join a guild and have them help you with content you find hard.
When I was leveling my alt’s on the other hand I have been buying new gear in TP every 10th level, lvl 10, 20, 30, 40 and that realy makes things easier.
What people forget in this game is that you scale down to a level fitting the instance or map you are playing so level isn’t that important as long as you have the level or higher for the instance, what you need is good gear.
Thief is imo one of the hardest classes to level to 80 or atleast 60, with no trait’s Thief doesn’t have that much of what they need, but GW2 most important skill (That all chars has) is Dodge and Thiefs do it even better, you said you where using Pistol/dagger? And that is imo one of the best combos for survival, remember to always stay far away from your target and when they are close you use 4 to get distance and 5 to be insvisible and while stealthed you move to a good distance and use skill 1 to utilice good condition damage but mainly dodge, dodge, dodge and dodge whenever you can.
