OK, I’ve done the Battle for Claw Island several times and got past this champion risen with ease before. Now I’m back here facing him as I escort Zott to the Priory light tower.
All risen mob groups dispatched, and now only the Champion Risen Plaguebearer stands between me – and a party of NPC Whispers agents, Doern and Barron.
Enter fight- the Risen trolls me, teleporting around the whole platform, spawning Locust Swarms like crazy and yes, I know about 10 sec repeated application duration, but we’re hanging in there curing conditions like hell… one by one the NPCs go down, and I’m fighting him alone, and if I don’t die by massive condition damage, the Champion Risen returns to his start area and heals back up.
I’m fighting him on the platform – I’m not kiting him too far for him to reset…
Can you look into this champion mob, Anet?
There’s always something with this dumb mission. I wonder why one of the devs is always messing around with the mobs in there, creating all kind of unbeatable cheese BS…
If it’s not the Champion Risen Plaguebearer, it’s the Acolythe, that spawns unlimited unkillable minions every couple of seconds because somebody felt like tweaking them.
Dude, just make them all regular trash or at the very maximum one veteran and stop ruining the mission every week, or so! Save the cheese and lame encounters for Fractals or some optional content, not personal story. Nobody enjoys lame fights or massive, sudden and unexpected difficulty spikes in story progress. Just make all champions and veterans regular trash mobs and leave the mission alone. It’s annoying as it is, already.
Of course a few tries later now and revising my build I’ve managed, but only just and I was downed with Doern Rodriguez delivering the killing blow to rally the rest of us
Although I don’t think they should remove tough mobs altogether, they should definitely nerf him. He’s killed me about 5 or 6 times now and I’ve barely gotten close to killing him.. Maybe it’s partly because I suck, but he can take way too many hits whilst swinging for insane damage even when I have tried to avoid his locust swarms and the AoE circle abilities :/
Problem is: He keeps resetting sometimes during the battle. This enemy is utterly stupid. If your goal is making people quit your game just keep designing stuff like that.
Same problem here. Cant touch this Champ by myself. I guess I have to find a bunch of friends to join me. Ridiculous for a Story Instance
Nice to know this wasn’t just me, I am about ready to junk this game after wasting several hours trying to do a story quest 10 levels below me.
I’m having the exact same problem. Have been trying to do this story mission with my level 70+ ranger. If I try to avoid the Champion at all (even if I stay within range and continue attacking it with ranged weapons), it will reset and heal to full, and obviously I don’t last long if I don’t try to avoid damage. Lose/lose situation. I hope it gets fixed soon.
Yep, unbeatable atm. Level 80, dead in seconds, allies dead in seconds. Cannot defeat the champion. Even when you get some health down on him, he just resets
I just manacled to defeat him but it required Professor Gor’s vacumagic polarizer gun to do it and I did it with a lucky shot the boss with the same skill set in the order of whispers story missin just before this one has simular issues.
Just remove the reset mechanic on npcs in the personal story

I am trying my hardest to defeat this boss with no luck. I can only manage to get him down to around 50% health before he gains it all back. Reviving two of my most powerful allies does not seem to help at all. I was most definitely in the mood to do storyline but am barely in the mood to play the game at all now.

I am level 73 with gear over the level of the quest. Maximum I get is 50% health, after which it heals back in couple of seconds. Company is dead in seconds and reviving them make no sense – until the second revive is done the first ally is already dead.
I will have to find other means for leveling up.

After dying, I decided to exit to Lion’s Arch and try one last time. This time, the boss did not bug out and I was able to kill him. I noticed that when he would reset before restarting, he would be off to the right of the ramp, but when I exited and re-entered, he was standing right in the middle of the ramp. I am not sure if that has anything to do with it, but it worked upon re-entry.
I have the same problem .. not sure if this is a bug or this boss need epic kind of gear to be killed . but he also keep reset to me half way down . I tried to exit and go in again but it didn’t seem to make any change . if this is a bug I hope it will get fixed I enjoyed the game so far and the story progression hate to think it will end for me this way .
So I’m a level 60 thief doing the personal story. I normally run D/D as it gets me the most dps but if I get close I get chunked. So I switched to shortbow and I just can’t deal with the conditions that this guy puts out. Should I go P/D or S/P? Is there a good build I can use to get past this guy? He’s had me stumped for quite some time.
I just got to this part of the personal story as well (at level 61). Tried it three times in a row before deciding to call it a night and log out, it’s really no fun at all. All the NPCs die within seconds and the best I managed by myself was getting him down to about 60% before he reset.
This was a really unexpected difficulty spike for me, I still have no idea how I am going to get past this one without asking for help and I’d actually like to finish the personal story, being a new player and all.
I’ve tried this about 15 times at lvl 61 with no luck. I did the entire area without loosing hardly any life, then I get to this guy and he crushes me in seconds. I use battle standard to revive everyone at once, and as quickly as they get on their feet they are back down. The most I was able to get him down was about 2/3 then he ran away and the locusts got to me… They need to fix this…
what is a champion lvl npc doing in a story in the first place? i dont recall needing a party to do a personal story mission. i have maybe gotten him half way down and his cripples poisons etc is insane and owns me. maybe this should be toned down geeee i don’t know!!!!!! looks like it by the comments? it is a story not a 5 party raid lol.
Also can’t complete this part of the story. Even went and unlocked 30+ more skill points to get abilities in hopes of beating him. No luck.
Now 12 levels above the store zone and still can’t beat this champ.
Fight starts and he immediately starts teleporting, killing the weaker NPCs i’m with.
This has to be a bug.. Watching videos of people doing this champion weeks/months ago and he doesn’t even move
I am having the same problem as the original poster. I am trying to complete this personal story on a level 76 Ranger, so my level shouldn’t be an issue. I tried twice with a friend and once solo. The Champ spawns locust plague that almost instantly kills all of my NPC friends and I’m left alone to solo him. I’ve gotten him down less than half health several times and he runs back to his starting location, resets to full health. Rinse, Repeat.
I would like to add that the fight is taking place on the deck where his starting position is and hasn’t been kited off the deck to other areas. He did go down to the lower deck at one point to kill the NPC I am escorting and I had him down to 10% health, but after killing the NPC he came back up ran to his starting position, reset to full health. I started shooting him again, got him to half health, we’re still on the deck about center, runs back to his spot and resets again.
Giving us a Champion to defeat in a personal story is shameful enough, but giving us a Champion who keeps resetting back to full health is just disgraceful. Please fix.

Just came back after not playing for some months. Went ahead and played a bit, killed Veterans and Champions out in the world on my own with ease. So I thought I could progress my story a bit… and than this mob comes along.
This guy is nowhere near normal Champions-level. Right now this guy is seriously broken. I remember doing him multiple times on my other characters back when I played. He wasn’t even worth mentioning back then.
I got disconnected from random internet drop out, and decided to try again after reading some of the comments in here. Second time, he was no problem to kill. Very odd. Guess my advise would be to just enter again if you have issues with this one. You might get lucky like I did.
Having the same issue as described above as a lvl 69 human warrior. The insta-heal and the locust swarm are driving me crazy and making me rage quit.

While there are/were champions in story missions, they seemed to be scaled down. Basically veterans with a few extra moves. But then again, the last time I played story mode was way back before the Zephyr Sanctum stuff..so maybe something changed..
I’ve been beating my head against this guy for a few days as well. First time I did the story months ago, I didn’t have any bother – barely even remembered this boss, but now it’s just ridiculous. Resets all the time, kills off the NPCs in seconds…
I’d really like to continue the story again, so please do something about this!
I think, all of us should report it is a bug. Btw, anyone tried to do that in a party and succeeded?
Its ridiculous. Hes not too bad to kill, if its not for the reset. Its probably him targetting one of the NPCs standing just off the platform that causes the reset. Rather remove that ability to warp around, increase his movement area, or just nerf him down so we can take care of him faster. Its a simple bloody hotfix to do any of the above.
Its pathetic that a quest that EVERY character has to do can have such a severe bug, and yet not even get a “We’re working on it” response.

I’ve downgraded the Plaguebringer to a veteran, so that should stop it from using Locust Shield among other abilities. When the champion plaguebringer was upgraded to make it better for open world content, it was assumed to be facing multiple players. I don’t have an ETA for when the change will go live, but it’s in the queue for inclusion in a future update.

Its hard to get people to party up on a quest but perhaps we’ll do that until the fix is released.
It does looks possible with two people on this mission.
There is less benefit to re-run the missions. (I miss Bonuses!) I will have to bribe someone to finish this mission. }:)
I will be looking for the fix in the future release notes.
As of today he’s still a Champion mob. Still impossible to kill for all the reasons the other posters stated. Swarms take down the NPCs and then he resets to full health.
Here’s looking forward to being able to complete this quest!
I have managed to complete this mission without a sweat with the help of a player, just ask someone for help and I’am pretty sure that someone in this friendly community will help you
If he doesn’t go down straight away with the npcs up, you’re not gonna kill him basically. Really weird how he is impossible one time, and then trivial the next. Not sure if I got super lucky the second try or what, but yeah…. trivial. No problem whatsoever. Hardly fought him at all the second time.
A noob lvl 65 warrior here….ok….I spent hours on this guy with hammer and rifle. It sucked. but I just beat him and it was actually crazy easy. I switched to a banner to rez all my guys…once rezzed I just use the bow skills and he melted like butter. just took pot shots at him while using combustive shot to aoe dot the area….and used healing surge to get my adrenaline up to do it again….and kept hitting with the bow standard attack and whatever I could fling at him.
btw…my armor was dead at this point…..so this worked with no armor.
It’s nuts but after hours of tryin him…he was down in like 30 seconds.
Don’t know how this would work with other professions but maybe it will give you ideas.
This mob keeps resetting no matter what.
Did numberous tries on this, but mob resets almost at the same moment as he releases his locusts.
yea he is still bugged i cant kill him been at it for a hour now level 65 thief i was shocked coz couple of months back he dropped first time with my mesmer will wait for fix
lvl 59 Ranger, got him to 50% best try but he keeps randomly resetting back to his start spot and gets max health. Being champ or vet doesn’t seem to be the problem here (practice will see him die on champ I’m sure) but rather the seemingly buggy reset that whips him back up to full health.
Looking forward to some sort of fix / tweak so can continue with story
Same here. I have been trying for hours with a lvl70 thief and ultimately there are 2 options.
option 1: refills hp
option 2: kills me with that aoe spells
Whether i use that special weapon provided by the professor or several builds, it is still unbeatable. Looking forward to a fix as all of my fellow travellers in the beaten-by-the-champion club.
I just tried it again earlier and killed him first try. I don’t know if anything was tweaked but he didnt’ whip out of combat and leash back to his start spot and regain full hp. Took everything with all cd’s down and most npc’s dead but he died!
Dunno if I just got lucky maybe, best part of the story so far – really enjoyed the rest of Claw Island after that guy died.
So the answer in my case, as an elementalist in the Vigil, was to talk to Snarl Backdraft a second time. He starts the quest, and then acts as though he’s done, icon goes off his head and all that. However, when I talked to him again, he gave me a big turret to carry around. This then could be put down and picked up as often as I wished, it seemed, and would spam fire at the enemies. In doing so, it spammed the Champion and kept his health form regenerating so I could stand back and heal as needed.
I’m not sure why there’s no indication that one needs to do this, and I imagine it varies by quest line. However my first try, without the turrets that I didn’t know was available to me, resulted in invinca-champion.
GW2 really needs more playtesting with regards to difficulty because while this is the most egregious example, it is fairly typical I find with regards to uneven difficulty. You can find a given kind of encounter (with regards to level, number of mobs, etc) nearly trivially easy, then another impossible. There seems to have been little testing with regards to spawn rate, aggro range, letting players know of special mechanics, etc. Hence it can be very frustrating.
Difficulty is something that should have a good deal of consistency in a game. That isn’t to say everything should be easy, but that whatever level of general difficulty you have is maintained overall. It shouldn’t jump all around and seem easy at times, impossible at others.
Has anyone figured out how to solo this critter? I’ve died more than 6 times. He self heals too fast.
Just beat this guy solo with a lvl 63 guardian after about 5 runs. strategy: i went in and popped all possible cooldowns and then just kind of hid up on the bridge until i was able to heal up to full health again letting my main ally fight him while i would flip between trying to do as much damage as possible in about 5 seconds before my health was down to 25% and hiding on the bridge until i was able to heal again. did that about 3 times before the finally died
I love completing personal story. Did it for my last 7 toons alone without a hitch. This time I brought in my L75 Engie. 3 resets and 2 deaths later, the Champ is still standing. Even with extra endurance elixir, turrets, tons of healing and condition removals, his kitten flies gave me over a minute of poison. What’s more, he resets everytime he hits 50%. This is ridiculous.
EXACT same fight style by Lord Zhim Saliah from the quest ‘Priory Assailed’. I broke 4 pieces of armor and had to wait for a friend to come online before asking him got assistance.
I don’t mind the copying of Lupicus, but if I didn’t have trouble with all my other toons, there’s obviously a problem with the champ. Please change them back to normal. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it please.
Hi Jeffrey Vaughn. (Content Designer) I appreciate the work you’ve done to patch this but 8 days later and the patch hasn’t been released is not acceptable.
Can you please obtain an ETA so I can figure out when I will come back to GW2?

I am soo happy to see that it’s not just me. I can’t seem to even touch this guy. The NPC’s running with me all dropped like sacks of potatoes right on the him so I can’t get anywhere near them without pulling him. I think the farthest I’ve gotten his health down is, like, 75%. It’s ridiculous.
Please fix this soon. I would really like to continue my story.
Yep glad it’s not just me, This guy is wiping me out every time. I got him down to about 50% health and I thought he would be just about dead then his life reset back to full and he wiped out all the NPC’s in a couple of seconds.
Horray! I just got owned by this mob four times now. I feel everyone’s pain. NPCs die in seconds, resets like crazy when I try to run away from the constant locust spawns, and trying to hand back and just shoot him with my short bow isn’t getting me very far. Definitely needs to be fixed.
I had a lot of success using the vacuumagic. You get a choice of who to recruit in the previous mission. I suspect that some choices (the melee ones) let you steamroll this and some (the vacuumagic) you need to use the weapon your sidekick can provide you. Also run up and stand by the lighthouse when you fight him. Sample size of one but he seems to stay towards the lighthouse end of the platform and not reset (which he did a bunch when I was at the other end). Good luck with it.
