So, I finished ‘The Battle for Claw Island’ yesterday.

Completely honest, it was the least fun I’ve had in Guild Wars 2 thus far. The quest started out fine, and the kills even gave XP. However, after the first ‘get the abominations off the wall’ part, it was just a pain. You had to battle through endless groups of risen just to get where you needed to go, all the while those groups were respawning right on top of you. To add to that, the respawning ones didn’t give any experience or loot.

After you lit the beacons, it was a pain again. You were told to go ‘hold out’ with the lionguard(nothing more, just a MASSIVE green circle on the map), so I simply sat in the green circle for a while – killing over 600 risen(receiving no xp or loot for it, breaking my armor and just wasting my time) before becoming fed up and running to the beach to see if things there would give XP. Upon reaching the beach, the part with the dragon triggered and that was that.

Anyways, just my two cents on that. If you’re going to disable xp / loot for the mobs and not give clear directions – at least make the end reward something worth it(it wasn’t).

I tore through it really quickly with powerful AoE myself. Killing one Risen took as long as killing 12 Risen, so the event wasn’t nearly the difficult grind you seem to describe. Maybe you just used the wrong tactics? Also note you didn’t have to kill everything until that final segment where you hold out. The rest of the time, especially when going to the beacon, the NPCs even tell you they’ll do the fighting and you should rush to light it.

I found the Risen were respawning so quickly it was hard to get clear before I was caught up in melee again. It was worse when my companions went down because I had no way to get in there and get them back up without getting swamped. A short break betweenthe spawning of waves of Risen would have helped immensely.

It was kind of frustrating getting bogged down so much and running away usually ended with both of my allies getting beaten down or running back into combat the moment I stopped to look around.

I’ve done this three times, each time, I havn’t been able to figure out what triggers the dragon to fly in and end it. In my third run (a few hours ago) I just idled up on the wall by a treb for about ten minutes, then ran to rez my mentor. I didn’t get her up, but right before I finished, the dragon flew in. My guess is that it’s a timed part, so just find a nice spot and tab out for a bit.

I jumped off the wall and fought foes for literally 2 hours. I thought it was a bug. Problem is, they did not clarify at all. The quest/event loop was halfway down the beach, and I’m very head on… So what do I do, jump off and fight! Needless to say, before I came back and raged about the bug, I redid the mission, checked all the walls… oh. They need to fix the circle. And when you revive the lady, forgot her name… Mira? Give the undead spawn a break, maybe. It’s extremely hard to tell someone: “Hey, you have to ignore all these undead, and just res this lady.” Because a lot of people lack that common sense of watching for endless spawns. Myself included, because I get caught in the moment when action arises sometimes… >.> Lesson learned: If you get no loot, you are going the wrong way.
