Spoilers Ahead.
Alright. There’s a huge discrepancy in the Sylvari personal story, and anyone that plays a Sylvari will notice it. It pretty much punches them in the face.

The story is great up until Claw Island, and the Pact.
-Caithe isn’t around anywhere between 30 to 80 in your story besides The Vision, but I’m sure this goes for other race’s mentors as well. It was just a minor annoyance to me. I really wanted more interaction with her.

-As soon as you arrive on Claw Island, you meet Trahearne. For the first time. Even though he’s been a big part in your story since the very beginning. The dialog points out that we have never met before.

-After Claw Island, your new friend decides you two should go speak to his mother for some advice.

-The Pale Tree, the mother of all Sylvari, refers to you as Trahearne’s friend. Even though you’ve had countless interactions with her. She also mentions that she gave Caladbolg to a young Sylvari previously. Yeah, hi, that was me.

-Later on through questing in Orr, Sylvari characters play a big role. Some of them you had the option of meeting early on during your story, or in The Grove, or Caledon Forest. They act as if it is your first time ever meeting, and act like you aren’t even Sylvari.

-Your Wyld Hunt to slay the dragon in Orr is never mentioned again, even after it’s done.

-And finally, this isn’t completely Sylvari-related, but the main character of this story isn’t me. It is not my personal story after Claw Island. It’s Trahearne’s. He is the main character. I’m his sidekick. How can you call it your personal story when you’re simply watching someone else get all the glory while you do all the fighting?

All you had to do in order to fix these gigantic discrepancies was change the greeting dialog between the Sylvari character and Trahearne, The Pale Tree, and the Sylvari in Orr.

Currently, it takes all immersion out of the story.

I’m glad I read this. I had a feeling the sylvari storyline was going to go downhill after Mazdak’s quest. This is extremely saddening, I think that the sylvari had the most potential to have the best, more immersive storyline. -_-

Can this even be fixed now…?

Unless they get the VA’s back together and create dialog specifically for Sylvari, then no. We’ll have to deal with the discrepancies.

Honestly the biggest slap in the face was completing Trahearne’s Wyld Hunt for him.

Those problems are not only Sylvari related. I’m a Charr, and i start the game by becoming the leader of my warband. Then when the name Zhaitan enters the history with the Orders, BANG! Warband doesnt exist anymore, i remember to receive an-email from Rytlock saying that they were doing well. But…..I DONT KNOW YOU! But i LOVED my warband, I WANTED TO BE TRIBUNE some day. But whatever, im have no race lol?! I just become TREHEARNE pal’s ?! I didnt even like him, WTF

While I agree with most of your points, I will defend two:

-Caithe isn’t around anywhere between 30 to 80 in your story besides The Vision, but I’m sure this goes for other race’s mentors as well. It was just a minor annoyance to me. I really wanted more interaction with her.

Just as much as you have your story, she has hers. If you haven’t realised, you will see her running between dungeons chasing down Destiny’s Edge and trying to do the impossible job of reuniting them.

“This is my story” does not mean “This is my story of how I single-handedly saved the world”. Yes, ArenaNet wrote us into the role of the – in your words – “sidekick”; that doesn’t make it less of a story, just a less vainglorious one. Further to say Treherne is sitting in Fort Trinity twiddling his thumbs is outright shortsighted. Yes, you’re out in the front lines taking down key targets, but at the same time other plans and sorties are being executed by Treherne behind the scenes. And hey, you are still glorified for your various deeds, if you haven’t noticed the cheering and “Thank yous”.

“She also mentions that she gave Caladbolg to a young Sylvari previously. Yeah, hi, that was me.”

-SPOILERS-

Actually, the Pale Tree gave Caladbolg to a First Born Sylvari (not you or me). I forgot his name. This firstborn Sylvari guy had a human apprentice, and together they went to defeat an evil undead magus or something like that. The human apprentice didn’t want to die so he took Cadalbolg from the Sylvari guy and ran away. The evil magus thing appears and easily kills the Sylvari guy because his weapon was stolen by the human. Your job was to get Caladbolg back from that human so the Pale tree could give it to Trahearne. It was never meant to be given to you. That’s why when the Pale Tree says she had given it to another sylvari, she was actually referring to the guy who died trying to kill the evil magus thing.

She specifically mentions a young sylvari, and recently. All Sylvari characters were given Caladbolg to use in an important story mission.

So, by that, I gathered she meant me. I don’t think I’m wrong on that.

Especially noticed some strangeness in the Mirror, Mirror quest, where apparently the wardens who bring the mirror (which I retrieved from the skritt), got rescued from Orr by Trahearne instead of by me…

Yeah, this has been commented on in several other posts. ANet completely ignored the starting race and everything that came before it when writing the story of the Order of Whispers from level 40+. Basically after you join the Order the story is the same regardless of your starting race.

…Talk about the death of immersion. This is an almost unforgivable mess up on ANet’s part. And you know they knew about it and just decided to ignore it.

Even as bad as some of the voice acting in GW1 was, the story line in GW1 was much better than what I have seen from GW2.

I do not see why all of you are complaining. From 30+ you are a member of the order you chose. sure you would still be a Sylvari, but you do not work with the Sylvari to defeat the dragon of Orr. You work with your order to do that and that is what the 30+ story parts are about: fighting Zhaitan or however his name is spelled.

All Sylvari are 25 years old or less, though.

To be perfectly honest, the real heroes are the ones who do not get the glory, the people who are “Just doing their job”. Is this a problem?

I can not believe people are actually supporting this BAD story telling. Are people really that “FanBoi-ish” that their Precious can do no wrong??? This is a great game, but ArenaNet cut too many corners with the Personal Story. I was expecting more from them.

I do not like it either, but there are times when the real heroes neither feel the need nor desire for glory/attention. that could be our character, just the average Joe/Jane looking to help out where they can.

if you want a story where your character is the focus, then why not play one of the many single player RPGS out there?

Uhm strange, but I don’t think that happened to me…at least the part with the Trahearne and the Pale Tree….i think they did remember me…but what happened to me, is that Carys and Tegwen didn’t know me in the mission " Through the Looking Glass". And they said that Trahearne saved them back then, even though he wasn’t even there ( I chose that i wanted the help of the Asura)

Actually I think it would be cool to have a story where you are NOT the hero but the guy behind that scenes that made everything happen — as long as it was done well. Unfortunately I don’t think you could describe GW2’s personal story as having been done well.

This also occurs with Tegwen and Carys. They “meet” you for the first time and tell you about a magical Mirror that they found…when….I WAS THERE. I SAVED YOU, REMEMBER? I WAS IN ORR?

Idiotic, really.

As I mentioned in another topic, there’s an even more egregious example of this that comes up with Laranthir. I did a number of missions with him, and in the next story step, Trahearne introduces him to me with both of us acting as though it’s our first time meeting each other. :-/

Gone for good after Halloween 2Ø12.
A shame fun things could not simply be fun.

The lack of recognition from the Pale Tree made me sad. Hello, she’s the mother of all sylvari, how could she forget one of her kids completely? The dialogue ignoring what race you are really takes me out of the story.

I’m actually surprised this ended up as overlooked as it did, since it’s such a glaring continuity error. I hope the personal story team takes racial identity and our previous mission choices more into consideration for expanded content, because diluting everything to the same lines is jarring across the board when we’re allowed to make totally different choices and play characters from totally different cultures.

Doesn’t really suprise me as theirs utterly no connection between story segments. Nothing flows its just a chopped up mess that eventually gets blended together into the same ending for everyone.

This game certainly stands as one of the finest examples of “Illusion of Choice” when it comes to the personal story.

Well since the whole Sylvari race is about 25 years old, any Sylvari she had given the sword to would be both “young” and “recent”.

Last night I reached the part of the story where I can use the mirror to lure out the eye so Trahearne “introduces” me to Carys and Tegwen and they act like they never met me before even tho it was me who saved Carys then helped her save Tegwen. I traveled with them to the skritt to get the mirror. I was there when Tegwen got sucked into it.

and to make it worse the next thing Carys says is that SHE helped Trahearne rescue Tegwen from the mirror.

WTF!?! That no good stuck up kitten* Trahearne is now stealing my credit?! He wasn’t even there!

(*I typed kitten)

I Chose to NOT go to Trahearne with the issue of Tegwen’s trip into the mirror. I Decided that an asura who had been studing portals longer than Trahearne , had been alive. Would be better suited to save Tegwen than Trahearne who had been studying a large area that might be where where Tegwen went.

I would have preferred if the story could have been effected by what Ive done in the past.
