The White Mantle (TWM) – Isle of Janthir
The Steel Tide Bugged?
The White Mantle (TWM) – Isle of Janthir
I just came from trying to do this mission. The camera freaks out when interacting with the tank. I regularly drop out of it (might be intended when I get damage or so), and have trouble standing on the right side of the tank to re-enter, because it only occasionally works from left or right, or the front.
Worst thing was while I’m adjusting the tank to shoot at the Risen ankittenhrown out while holding the 1 or 2 button, the tanks pointer moves to the maximum left/right position when I’m trying to get back in.
The tank also throws me out when I press 1/2 for longer than ~1 second, which causes the same as above.
That’s basically the same thing that was happening to me

yeah i made a post about this like 2 weeks ago and i’ve been ignored so not sure when this is being fixed but you can still beat this part if you manage to kill 4-5 of the giants using whatever ranged weapon you have, they dont reset when you die so you’ll probably have to spend some silver on repairs but you can beat it without the tanks.
hope this helps
I am having the same issue, the tanks kick you out, and if your turning the turret when your kicked out it just keeps on going so the next time you try to use it the turret is facing sideways, so you start moving it the other way .. and repeat. Would Love to see this fixed as it is very frustrating to keep getting kicked out of the tank…
I wish Anet had competent developers that didn’t leave CORE GAMEPLAY broken for weeks on end. This is not kittening acceptable.
I’ve been stuck on this quest for weeks and it’s totally disrupted the momentum of my personal story. I tried bypassing the tanks and taking down the giants. Managed to get two of them but just couldn’t face four more. It was so loooong wading through endlessly spawning minions to get to the giants and then pew pewing them asap before I got swamped by yet more minions. And don’t even talk to me about the repair bill. My last option – beg on my guild for assistance which I will do if they haven’t fixed it by Christmas (surely they would have fixed it by then????)
bug wars 2 .. can’t do anything right in this game. next time try to fix the original gw2 stuff before you throws other junk patch into your game.
Was the same for me when I did it last week. Manged to finish the mission using the Mortars but it took a long time! Seems an incredible oversight from Anet since its such a barrier to completing the Personal story. Has it been logged as a Known issue?
You absolutely can complete this chapter with the mortars. You shouldn’t die, since the npc keep the mobs off your back. You do have to kill six giants, so it does take awhile to complete.
It is too bad that the key aspect of this chapter is bugged (the tanks). But, you can keep going so this bug is not a game stopper.
This quest is so stupid and horribly bugged.
(1) Quest objective too Ambiguous!
“Use the tank to stop the counterattack”
Okay I use the tank but with these endless respawns, what’s the goal? When will it end?
(2) Changing the direction of the tank never stop. So it is always pointing at 3 o’clock or 9 o’clock. Releasing button 1 or 2 and it is still turning until it stops.
(3) Just one hit from an enemy, you are knocked down from the tank. You can hardly stay on the tank for more than 5 seconds.
(4) Camera bugged constantly and jumping in all directions.
Trying to finish it and wasted like 20 minutes, finally I gave up and decided to send in report in the forum. I moved my character back to behind the tank and doing nothing. Most friendly NPCs are dead. When I was about to finish writing this post, OMG, it proceeds to the next stage. Looks like you need to AFK to complete it. Wonderful! Isn’t it. Quest objective should be “AFK for 30 minutes and pray that it proceeds”.
I agree with the above— same issues still. I was SO disappointed in this b/c it had the potential to be so very, very awesome.
1) I thought the tanks would be the awesome ones you see in Charr lands, but they are like the monopoly racecar with guns. And you don’t get “in them” you use them by putting your hand on them? Tank?
2) the bug where you are ejected from the tank b/c of the camera. Horrible
3) mortars so close that I sometimes start using them, trying to figure out where I need to move to to get back “in” the tank.
4) the turrent moving all the way when you are ejected— hair pulling.
5) least is the A.I. my ground troops advance way to quickly when they have a tank… racecar mortar… line.
I was so frustrated that I had to take a break from the game for a while.
experiencing the same/similar mess with the turret, tank controls spitting you out, and camera issues with this story at the tank section
Was the same for me when I did it last week. Manged to finish the mission using the Mortars but it took a long time! Seems an incredible oversight from Anet since its such a barrier to completing the Personal story. Has it been logged as a Known issue?
Hey Kavs, could you describe how you did it? I tried the mortars, got a giant down, and I though that was the way to go. Then I get into a mortar further to the right to target a second giant, and then I see the first one respawn.
If anyone has actually finished this without using the tank, could you please describe how you did it? I mean, what are the actual triggers for ending the mission? Is it killing all of the giant’s? I don’t care how long it takes, or what my repairbill might be, I just want to get past this.
This is may be taken badly by some of the people who actually want to progress in their Personal Story, but Steel Tide is one of the best places to farm for Rares. Just do that first objective (defending the place from the hordes of Zombies) again and again with full MF gear and cons, restarting after it’s over. You can make some pretty good money this way while you’re waiting for them to fix the spazzed out Tanks.
Who knows, The Fates may just be smiling on you, getting bugged out on a potentially profitable mission.

I thought they had patched the mission to remove drops.
edit for below: Fair enough, clearly I am recalling the wrong thread or it was about a different mission.

Only the respawning enemies in “The Battle of Claw Island” lost their loot. I’ve mentioned it before in another thread—I’ve alerted our programming peeps about this bug, since it doesn’t appear to be anything that I can fix on the content side. I do not have an ETA for when it will be fixed on Live.
It’s a new year, and the mission is is still bugged. Tank kicks you out, team dies, and you’re left alone to fight 100s of risen. Stuck. I’m an unhappy player right now.
Just did this quest 3 minutes ago and I logged on to the forums just to express the frustration that I felt. This quest is so bugged that it is basically unplayable. I was only able to finish the quest by skipping the use of the tanks and running in and killing the giants. This seriously was the most frustration I have felt from any quest. It needs to be fixed.
Just finished this mission.
yes the tanks are totally bugged, but you can use the mortars to finish it easily.
It took me a sec to figure it out but you can see the mortars rotate, you really have to hold down the move right or left when aim them.
They take WAY longer to turn then any other mortars you have used in the past stories.
yes very frustrating…
Quest is still bugged after Jeffrey Vaughn’s post 22 days ago. The tank is unplayable and the amount of risen that needs to be killed with the mortar is too kitten high!
Really frustrated and dissapointing to see that Anet has not fixed this (and other personal story quest within the same chain).
Ultimately, it’s possible to just go directly after the giants and kill them one at a time. A bit painful, lots of restarting at the checkpoint, but if you only repair your armor once at the end, it’s not that expensive and doesn’t take too long.
Still, extremely annoying.
Just did this.. so annoying.. tanks kicking you from themselves.. mortars kicking you from themselves.. Charr weaponry at it’s finest, eh? >.>

I’ve opened a bug in the tank issue (it’s a code bug so I can’t fix it myself) and as a quick fix, I reduced the number of giants you need to kill to progress the story step. Unfortunately, the next content update isn’t until the end of the month.
Just came back to this after having problems 3 months ago expecting it to be fixed. Guess I shouldn’t have expected some integral mission in the main story to be fixed with some priority.

themaster, but you passed it, right? I mean, the tanks are bugged, but the quest itself is pretty kitten easy to finish if you use the mortars, even before the # of giants nerf.
What absolutely stinks about this for me isn’t the bugs – I overcame them, and progressed through after the same truly upsetting experience everyone else has posted.
People are going to take this comment however they choose, and that’s fine. But what really, truly got to me about this was that the sequence’s glitches completely destroyed the pacing and intensity of the story, and at a critical time. Up until that sequence, the mission built nicely. Then, WHAM! Intensity comes to a dead stop while overcoming the technical difficulties.
And right there near the end of the whole personal storyline. Guys, this one needs to be a priority. My experience showed that it’s not a progress blocking bug, but I don’t know that it wasn’t my own tenacity that kept it from being one.
Yeah. It was easier than before. Seemed to only take 1/3rd of the time to beat even though you still need to use mortars.
Just forced my way through this after a failed first attempt. One thing I noticed was that the tank most often ejects you when you try to push and hold 1 or 2 for continued movement. I found I could stay in the tank longer by pushing and releasing the movement buttons (1 or 2) multiple times to get to my desired angle rather than holding. I’d still get punted out from time to time, but sometimes I wouldn’t. Was able to at least zero in on the giants and take them down to complete the quest. Hope that helps some others get through it too.
Hi all, just like to provide my input after doing this mission about 10 minutes ago. The tank works perfectly fine, I can scroll left and right without any problems.
However, when the giants throw rocks at the player, it knocks the player out of the tank.
The tanks are an absolute nightmare to use in what I thought would be an exciting “tank” very close to the end of my personal story. Its been months and months and this core content still hasent been patched? Very Dissapointed.
Hi, I know this thread is a couple months old, but I wanted to post an update to remind the devs that the tanks are still unusable.
I was, however, able the beat the quest after a few tries by shooting the rock-throwing giants with the mortars. Hope that helps anyone else who is stuck.
I don’t see how the mortars are supposed to help. You can’t turn them, and the far right giant stands in an area where he can’t be hit by mortar fire in the default position. This is a story mode, kitten near game-breaking bug. Should have been fixed months ago.
And I was just killed because of this, after fighting for 20 minutes.
Seriously, ANet? This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen.
Had the same bug happen when I did this mission, took 5 tries to get it done… MANUALLY as a THIEF. Honestly ANet thought you guys fixed this ages ago..
Rodalli, the mortars can all be adjusted to hit the giants in front of them. The far right giant can be hit by the far right mortar. Takes maybe 5 miuntes.
Still broken today following the big patch. How do we complete our story? Ive played since day one, and have finally got to this stage just to be told “sorry, its broken, and we have no plans to fix it”? Really? Jeez.
As mentioned above, you can use the mortars to fight the giants during the large undead attack. You only need to kill 2-3 of them to proceed. As a workaround, I reduced the # required to progress while the tank turret gets fixed.
I was excited to get to drive/use tanks in this mission. Terribly dissapointed. Tanks are aweful to control, just ended up using the morters. What’s with the weird dog joke at the end too, wtf is that??!
