Every single thing about Guild Wars 2 so far for me has been perfect, save for one thing, Personal Story. The Personal Story needs some work done.

Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but the purpose of the story to begin with is to further the overall Guild Wars 2 plot and provide a decent distraction from everything you do regularly in the game.

Now, that’s great and all, but I would be a lot more excited to do my Personal Storyline if it wasn’t so freaking difficult! It’s not just a single mission that I’m having trouble with, every single Story quest has me dying and re-spawning at least 5-10 times, and that’s not an exaggeration. The Personal Story shouldn’t be easy, it should challenge me and make me think, but I shouldn’t feel forced to do it, I should want to do it.

I can’t be the only one here that is finding things hard to complete. Please, ArenaNet, really nerf some of the NPCs in Personal Story and buff your companion NPCs that are supposed to ally you on your PS quests. I just can’t take this anymore. PS is becoming a chore when it should be something I want to do more often.

You do know that there are level requirements for each personal story mission, correct? Maybe that is why it is so difficult for you?

Suggestions:
1)Meet the level requirement of the personal story.

2) Have Masterwork or higher rarity type gears.

3) Keep your gear up to your current level (which most people may find difficult to do due to lack of money or lack of crafting level until level 80)

4) balance your stats properly. Don’t focus on pure DPS or it will bite you back in higher levels. Add some toughness to boost your defense, vitality for more HP, or +healing to heal better. (toughness, vitality, and +healing focus save my life more times than the other builds I tried as a Thief.)

5) If you have traits focus on crit and strength then get gears that gives Toughness, Vitality, and +Healing to compensate for your lack of Armor and HP from having that trait build.

6) if you’re melee focused a lot then focus traits on maxing toughness and some Vitality. Also get gears that gives more toughness and +healing so you can last long enough until your healing skills recharges.

That all i can give you for now.

Despite a number of people saying you just need to learn to play, some of the personal story quests are actually overtuned/bugged. It looks like ANet has been fixing them, so your best bet is probably to report a bug or post specifically about which quest(s) is/are giving you trouble, along with the level you were when you tried them and your class.

Set To Blow, I’m looking at you.

It been bug free for me on my personal story runs but the only issue I have is that NPC allies become too easily defeated on the personal mission where you have to face large groups of enemies sometimes which tends to result with you being out numbered easily.

Not even my defensive build can save me from a large swarm enemies bashing me at once.

Exactly what has been stated above. Meet those requirements, effectively use dodge/any npcs. Run out of fights when you have to, aoe as much as you can. Never died in a personal story, nor failed one.

I agree with the OP. I am working on “A Light in the Darkness”, the story line is lvl 55 I am lvl 61, cant complete it. I get blinded then beseiged by a mob of bad guys. Undoable. Thankfully this game doesn’t have a sub price or else I would have cancelled.

I was able to finish alone all the quests but the last one (that is a 5-man story mode dungeon). For almost all of them I was about the level suggested. (Note: I was struggling with a long standing bug in “Forging the Pact” and I continued leveling, once I was able to complete it I was overleveled for a handful of them afterwards).

I did NOT have any special gear (so don’t allow EdwinLi’s advice to prevent your progress)

My advice? Strategize, look for elements around the area that could allow you gaining an advantage moving out of line of sight or, be smart kiting and pulling, in one word, be patient and plan ahead.

Possibly the fact that I was not top notch geared made me taking longer to defeat the challenges than what other people claim (the ones that will tell you “l2play noob”) but at the end, I finshed the Story, in my own terms

@Moonblade their only suggestions not requirements. It for handling the damage you receive if you’re not good at dodge or kiting yet or when a large amount of enemies ignores your NPC allies and goes after you.

What class / story chain did you guys choose that you found challenging? I played my warrior through the Vigil quest line and found it to be really easy (even before the nerfs to difficulty) and I’m getting the impression that I chose an easymode class. I also haven’t been killed in Orr yet by anything other than one of the environmental jumping puzzles, and I pretty much solo’d the skill challenges except the maze one in Cursed Shore where my DPS wasn’t high enough to kill the two vets back to back.

I was thinking of rolling an Elementalist to up the ante a little, would this be a good choice for difficulty?

I have to say I found the personal story quests to be VERY difficult to the point of not being able to do some of them unless I was at least 10 levels higher than the quest in order to have more points in traits etc. That’s just plain wrong, imo. The difficulty should match the level it’s for and a player shouldn’t be expected to have the best of the best gear at all times either because it’s unrealistic to be able to have that type of gear at all times unless you have a higher level toon who is feeding that gear to your lower ones. They seriously need to adjust the difficulty level and it would be nice if I wasn’t -forced- to group up and do a dungeon just to advance in my personal story line.

nosleepdemon: If you want challenging, level a Mesmer and try those storyline quests solo that you did on your warrior, ROFLOL.

well as i just said in another thread just like this one:
i did it at launch and im doing it again now and i can say its a LOT easier now than then.
a lot of the bugs have been fixed and the enemy have been thinned out a lot.
ill say again, theyre doing good work toward the issues that were halting progress.

i do however exceed the level for the story and try to clock 100% in each zone to coincide with the story before i start it in that zone,

also you cannot underestimate the benefit of toughness.
just sayin ^^
