Too much running
Don’t take this the wrong way but you must be doing something wrong. Where do you keep spending your money? When I was your age (read level) I had well over a gold.
I don’t agree with anyone that says waypoint travel is too expensive in this game (and that’s coming from an 80 who travels from one side of the map to the other – Orr to Black Citadel, Divinity’s Reach to Fireheart Rise, etc.), since I have plenty of money for travel on all of my characters…I don’t even make an effort at earning money, although I’ll admit I also don’t spend it while leveling on anything other than salvage kits etc. either.
More to the point, though: I do have the same issue, although with a different strech of the storyline…I’m not happy with Human 20-30, where you meet the Orders. It might be the same with other races but I can’t confirm that.
The first mission you’re sent out to Kessex Hills just so you can talk to the Order representatives in a tent. You don’t actually do anything there. Yes, I get that it’s close to the swamp you’re about to do things in, but still…the swamp is outside the boundaries of the instance anyway. The next three missions, you’re doing stuff around Kessex Hills. However, inexplicably and for no good reason, after every one you are sent back to the Salma District…for the sole purpose of talking to the Order representatives again. What happened to that tent? Or why couldn’t I meet them in the Salma District for the first mission? Logan is there too, but it’s not like it’s unusual for him to go to other areas; he does it plenty of times at other points in the story. The final mission conveniently takes place in the throne room, so I don’t need to pay for travel or anything, but the rest are just…argh.
In every other chapter of the personal story that I have played through, the locations I had to travel to were picked with legitimate and justifiable reasons. Later on there’s a lot of back-and-forth to Fort Trinity too, but that I can at least understand; Trahearne, being the Marshal and all, can’t exacty up and leave whenever he feels like it, and there aren’t too many other safe places in Orr anyway. But the Human 20-30 series just baffles me. Those Orders representatives aren’t even particularly important people; they completely disappear after finishing the chapter, and even within their Orders they aren’t high-ranking. Why do they need me to travel all the way back to Salma District?
You might play this game for a long time.
You can do the leveling only once (per character).
You can do the Story-Quests only once per character.
Once you’ve done it, it is over. Gone. Past.
So enjoy the Story Quests.
Especially on your first character. When everything is fresh and new.
Who cares if it takes a few more minutes.
If leveling-speed is all you care about, go join the zerg is some Public Event. Good xp per hour, and a lot less running.
I enjoy the Story Quests.
All the heart-quests are easy-peasy, quick, don’t require you to think or even read anything. I’m not a fan of the heart-quest paradigm. I prefer the old fashioned quests. They give more flexibility and variety, imho. One type of quests you will never see with heart-quests is the “courier quest” or “express quest”. I miss those. If the world is nice, it’s fun to travel through it.
I enjoy the Story Quests.
You’re playing a warrior or guardian obviously. Because those are the only two classes who can play the story quests without issue.
I finished “Quaestor’s Siege” in the upper regions of the Fields of Ruin. Because I am a 39 it is getting VERY expensive to travel, so I have to run all the way back to Ebonhawke.
Then I take the Asura Gate to Divinity’s Reach only to take another Asura Gate to Lion’s Arch.
Within Lion’s Arch I port (for free) to the Canal Ward way point to enter Gendarran Fields where I now have the pleasure to run to the northernmost reaches to visit the Virgil Headquarters. There is an Asura Gate behind closed doors in the headquarters but it cannot be accessed.
So now now I get to run all the way back to Lion’s Arch so I can travel to the Blood Tide Coast.
I do not find this fun:(
IMO, this is horrible planning within the Personal Story line.
Well, because I run versus way point travel I do have over 2 gold…so I am a tightwad. BUT that was not the primary complaint in my poorly worded post.
The complaint is having to travel back and forth for meaningless conversations after the quests are finished. IMO, there is no reason that an Asura gate cannot be installed linking the Whispers, Vigil, Priory headquarters to Lions Arch or another city.
As another poster reported, running/ mapping back and forth to Divinity’s Reach in the early portion of the human stories seems excessive and unnecessary. Same happens in the other races.
As for the stories themselves, I am finding them most enjoyable; the characters memorable and humorous. I have five characters active each doing different stories.
I thought that I understood Guild Wars is supposed to be about playing. Not running mapping all over the place.
I have to agree with this one.
Both my wife and I are only up to the level 25-ish point in our personal stories and there is SOO much running involved.
Complete story event, go back to the Grove for 30 second conversation then run BACK past where you were.
We both made the mistake of running through some DE content first so were level 33-ish before we started the stories. The waypoint costs for teleporting are very excessive, eating almost a silver at a time.
In fairness though, the waypoints are there for convenience and the running can help you to explore or discover new areas. It is the pointless short dialogues back at City X that really get to you, when there are plenty of locations within a zone that would make more sense to use as a local base. Why not use more emissaries?
It is a shame as the stories are actually pretty decent. This aspect, however, does make you want to not play and nearly everyone in my friend circle has a similar opinion.
