Why I've stopped caring about PS
Yup, anet really liked killing characters off in the PS. Some of the good ones live like Snarl, Galina, Carys and definitely a few others I can’t think of right now, but on the whole likeable characters tended to bite the dust. Instead we get the talking salad forced down our throats.

Spoiler below for a pretty well done NPC death in a branch of the PS.
Crusader Apatia’s death was particularly well done, IMO. Her death was particularly sad since we had to end her life ourselves
Oh, I agree. Some were ok, like Havroun Grechen.
But a more than 50/50 chance that an NPC you actually get a cutscene with will die is ridiculous. May as well give them all red shirts.
Tonn had to die because that happening is what you told the Pale Tree you feared the most (in this case it’s “Causing an innocent to die”,) just like telling her you don’t want to cause someone suffering means you cause someone suffering and then the same with screwing up such that you lose the respect of your peers.
Hmm yes, I guess so.
But it is sort of forced… I didn’t mess up and cause an innocent to die… he did his duty and died a hero. Okay, his wife doesn’t see it that way but it is a bit of a forced element when it wasn’t my fault.
Also, Tonn was in no way an “innocent”. He fought the risen. That’s like saying an innocent soldier died in combat. No. It’s saddening and terrible, but he is in no way innocent. A non-combatant is an innocent.
To be honest, all of the “fears” the Pale Tree makes you pick from, this one is just written wrong imo. Its wording was making me watch for some civilian like Faren appearing from out of nowhere and getting mauled to death by a risen >.> It should’ve been worded something like “Fear of watching a comrade die” or something of the sort.
Anywho, derailed a bit, but I agree completely. Any NPC worth a spit (to me) was killed off at one point or another.
and style to turn them into craters and dust.” -Tonn

Batanga and Zrii survive, as far as I know (what is it about Whispers getting all the best characters?). Tonn, yeah; he’s happily married, quirky, funny, and awesome. And the entire time I’m thinking he has just two weeks left until retirement. Seriously, why didn’t he just put on a Hawaiian shirt and say he’s a leaf on the wind?…and now I’ve made myself sad.
You didn’t know this game was the new of game of thrones?
SHOCKED!
Nearly everyone our characters interact seems to die. Well everyone except the walking tree that a great many would like to see die. Seems a shame that the personal story didn’t show some of the side effects of that. Mistrust of the troops, new nicknames besides the long forgotten “Hero of Shaemoor” like butcher of <insert random personal story location here>.
