I would not be surprised if this has already been covered, but the Search engine does not want to work for me, so apologies in advance if this is the case:

Tybalt is one of two amazingly well done NPCs in this game (the other being Dinky from the Charr origins story). These two Charr stand out in a sea of eminently forgettable characters.

Why, oh why, did you have to sacrifice Tybalt? It might not have even been so bad if my character had shown more emotion. It might not have been as bad if the move had even made logical sense… I mean how could one character single-handedly hold off that many enemies for long enough that everyone else could make their escape?

Don’t misunderstand me, I really like this game, and I’m not typically somebody who even enjoys MMOs. Part of why I really find GW2 a breath of fresh air is that the Personal Stories rival (or even, in some cases, exceed) those typically found in single player games. So, I was caught a little off guard when my best NPC friend casually volunteered to sacrifice himself and my character responded with a ‘business as usual’ approach, in fact, I don’t even think she responded at all!

Don’t worry.

I gets even worse so you’ll forget about him fast.

Whispers was my first story branch too, since I play an Asura I was able to accept my toon’s lack of reaction to usual asura pragmatism… (I had to forget about Vekk to accomplish that)

Cancer is also a Zodiac sign.

because arenanet wrote the story arcs as isolated events with no sense of pacing and progression, and couldn’t let anything carry over from one arc to the other. he won’t even get a mention after that.

He does get mentioned again. The mission before Arah.

OP, I would take it a a compliment if i were the story line writer that you were moved or upset that Tybalt was killed. It means that the story was well written and if it can move someone, I will have done my job. Cheers A-net!

oh yeah, the one mission that briefly mentions everything that happened, just to give the illusion that the story isn’t broken in various separated segments.

“OMG MY LONG LOST SISTER. kthxbai, i need to talk to the 3 orders. see you in 60 levels worth of story”

“OMG MY BEST FRIEND WHICH I KNEW FOR THE ENTIRETY OF TWO MISSIONS (i mean from a story perspective. you do the introduction mission, then the help a race mission, and then he dies) IS DEAD. oh well, hello trahearne, let’s be BFFs”

which reminds me. “initiate, you’ve done a single mission, but you’ve done it well. you’re now an agent.”
“agent, you’ve done one mission since you got that rank, but why not. you’re a lightbringer now. OUR HIGHEST RANK OF OPERATIVE, WHICH WE HAND TO OH SO FEW PEOPLE”.

ANet was always in such a hurry to move from one arc to the other (so that they could do all the hundreds of story branches they promised) that it hurt the pacing and character progression. having so many choices, in the end, made them carry little weight, because the story arcs couldn’t account for all possible choices you made, which meant they had to have a clear start and finish before another arc began.

Because killing off a character is an easy solution for continuity as well as being some of the lowest hanging fruit on the pathos tree. Even then it doesn’t work when you get a completely different set of npcs to work with every few missions and there's almost always a red shirt among them, giving you little time or reason to care about any of them.

I would have had less of a problem with it if it wasn’t such a pointless death. It’s basically 1) mentor character holds their “I have to hold them off” speech, 2) the big door/gate closes, 3) risen spawn instantly everywhere anyway as you run off to the boat. The way it is scripted it just looks like they’re throwing away their lives for the heck of it. I get what this was supposed to accomplish (getting angry at the risen and feeling that you have to revenge your mentor) but while I was fleeing I was rather angry at the stupid decision my mentor made (and how ANet wrote the scene) cause we could have easily taken them back to the boat if they’d just closed the door from the outside.

My reaction would have been a lot different if they’d be severely injured during the mission (“Ugh, I won’t make it! Fly, you fools!!”) or encircled by enemies during our escape or something along these lines. But holding a speech? Made me scream at them “FOR KITTENS SAKE!! Stop talking, we could’ve been save and sound on the boat already!! ARRGH rage

Well, all the orders’ paths are just as ‘tragic’ there (though I found the events so contrived, abrupt, and subsequently glossed over that it had no meaningful impact), but the problem is that, as I’ve mentioned elsewhere, the comments made in the penultimate mission just don’t make sense for the Priory.

Seiran was a Sylvari. The eye claims she’s ‘waiting for us beneath Zhaitan’s wings’, but… Sylvari are incorruptable by Dragon magick. And this is seemingly, fairly, well-known and was actually brought up earlier in the storyline for me (as a Sylvari), so it doesn’t even work sell as a mindscrew. Just feels really lazy that all they would do is swap out your mentor’s name there. :-/

Sorry to say this also happens in the vigil arc too. I enjoyed my Norn mentor as well. He rubbed me slightly wrong at first but then grew on me and then… gone.

The story only gets worse. In walks the supplanting (yes it’s a pun) Plant person who takes over the story and your character is just a lackey.

Just get through the story and really don’t think about the story because it’s horrible.

Apparently, Jemmi, you are the only one.

I thought, on meeting Tybalt, that his character was so richly rendered that he was destined to be around for a long time. Go figure that he’s dumped and replaced by Trehearne, who has the charm of a potato.

We know for a fact there IS a Risen Tybalt due to the dialogue from Sovereign Eye of Zhaitan. And we also know the Risen still remained in Orr after the defeat of Zhaitan.

So perhaps in the prologue of the next expansion, they could possibly discover a way to reverse the Risen effect using the water from the cleansed Heart of Orr, and possibly recover Tybalt from his Risen state?

I definitely see how they could re-introduce Tybalt back into the story, and this would let the player re-identify with their Order.

I think everyone prefers their order partners to Trahearne. I’ve heard a lot of positive things about Magister Sieran and Warmaster Forgal. Now Forgal wasn’t the best character I ever encountered but even he was heads and shoulders (and I don’t mean just in rendered character size) above Trahearne. But Tybalt was just a very memorable and well written character. He’s like the opposite of what you expect for a covert field agent in a secret society. He’s got a gentle puppy dog like face, and he’s kind of a klutz and bumbles his way around missions and makes things up as he goes. His cover identity is so bad it’s good. He’s a screwup, a flawed, believable character that “redeems” himself through sacrificing to ensure other people’s safety, and it’s only afterward that you realize what a friend you lost and it really means something in the story.

I’m playing through the vigil story now and I’m just not sure that I’ll miss Forgal as much as I miss Tybalt.

Tybalt made me feel creepy like a nasty man looking at me up and down as if I were some treat for him.

I’m glad he’s dead. Had enough of him in the very first mission he was in.

However, to you… my condolences.

All I’ll say is that it’s a same we didn’t get to end him ourselves. He’s an interesting character, though I can’t for the life of me figure out why we didn’t get to work alongside a competent and somewhat ruthless Order of Whispers agent. He would have been better suited showing up in the later half of the storyline associated with the Pact rather than an order he really didn’t suit at all.

I definitely see how they could re-introduce Tybalt back into the story, and this would let the player re-identify with their Order.

Following the current story-telling it will be something different:

Tybalt will come back as an enemy and we’ll kill him with the help of some NPCs (excluding Trahearne).

Ten to twenty steps later in the story we’ll meet the NPCs (that helped us kill Tybalt) again, but they won’t recognize us. They will tell us about the defeat of Tybalt just as if we had not participated. To make things perfect the NPCs will thank Trahearne for redeeming Tybalt. Finaly Trahearne will tell us about the sadness, that we never met Tybalt while he was still alive.

Sorry to say, but that’s just the way NPCs and events during my personal story were handled from 1 to 80.
