I personally havent made it past level 66 PS. The PS story was always kinda boring but it gets boring as hell at that point. Too much Tree man.

Much as I love Tybalt (and the Order of Whispers in general,) I think there are some good story sections in the Pact story arc. Demolitionist Tonn, the Mouth of Zhaitan, and “The Source of Orr” were all very satisfying and memorable, I thought, and those are just off the top of my head.

I know a lot of people don’t like Trahearne, but, honestly, I thought he was okay. (Or would be if he wasn’t a Necromancer using a greatsword. No idea what that’s about.) He’s not the most colorful character in the storyline, but I’d say he’s certainly on par with most, and better than some if you can get your head into his side of the story. I’d read a novel about him they did one.

If you play as a sylvari, you get to wield it at one point regardless of your class. For all intents and purposes, it’s an environmental weapon. Trahearne just ran into a glitch where it wouldn’t unequip even outside the instance.

I agree with the rest of your post though, particularly the fact that he’s so much more likeable (or at least understandable) if you can imagine your way into his mindset.

In a word, yes. The wrong man died that day. From then on you have a humourless, faintly self-regarding, pontificating, sketchy-seeming, bossy twonk to tell you what to do instead of a charming and funny guy.

I’d like to say persevere, but, I’d be being dishonest. It’s not all terrible but it’s not great and there is just more and more Trahearne stuff as you go on, and what is fantastically annoying is how your character is a complete suck-up to him, something you have no control over (why even bother giving is dialogue options if that’s how it’s going to be?).

The personal story takes a dive the moment you are forced to join an order.

There was no real reasoning given why you couldn’t continue to work with all 3 orders simultaneously considering that this was supposed to be a huge problem that equally affected and required the need for everyone to work together. If anything, the story only really makes sense if you never join an order and instead spend all the time working to bring the orders together.

^This. You do an initial assignment, then another one helping out one of the sympathy races, then you’re brought right up to the highest rank right after that, then to Lion’s Arch and Claw Island. A bit too fast. And the orders’ constant arguing and biases towards each other got really stupid at times.

I think it’s a literary device employed to make players feel like we’ve achieved great things by uniting the three orders and destiny’s edge. The only downside of it is that Trahearne gets all the credit……….

My biggest pet peeve is that those three orders are completely left out of living story. Did the order of whisper know nothing about Scarlet? What about the other two orders? Or …is living story is pretty much the era after Zhaitan where the Orders cease to be relevant?

Well, the Order of Whispers and Vigil were helping out during the fighting with the Molten Alliance. And back during the Shadow of the Mad King (which is apparently part of the living story, at least according to the wiki), there was something with the Durmand Priory trying to find out about the Mad King. Besides that though, the Living Story has acted like they don’t exist, which doesn’t feel right.

To me the joining an order didn’t make sense not only because there was no reason for it but also because once you do join an order which you presumeably only do for the purpose of getting that order to better help you defeat Zhaitain, you don’t actually do anything to progress your quest to kill Zhaitain.

Making the player start as an ambassador to all the orders who was on an equal footing with the officers of all the orders where everyone was in agreement that they needed to work together to bring Zhaitain down to having the player join only one of those orders and start at the very bottom rank of that order didn’t seem like a natural or logical progression of the story. I mean none of the orders were actually fighting each other aside from the clashing of their different ideologies, none of the orders were in disagreement that Zhaitain was an immediate and pressing threat, they had already agreed to work together to address the problem of Zhaitain and continued to work together for multiple story line quests up to that point in time, so why did Anet randomly make the player join one of those orders and turn their nose up at the other when to both the player and every NPC in the game it was obvious that they’d need the help of every available force to defeat Zhaitain.

The only reason I could see the player joining one of the orders is because that order believed that by allying itself closer with the player that it would gain preferential treatment from the player however since none of the offer’s actually woo the player’s character it doesn’t really make sense why the player’s character decided to join one of the orders and turn their nose up at the other 2.

I could probably go on and on about this, but for me this was one of the 3 weakest points of the personal story.

The other 2 are:
2) Destiny’s Edge. They are an utterly useless collection of NPCs which mean absolutely nothing to the player if they didn’t play Guild Wars 1. (and everything related to Destiny’s Edge, especially Logan pulling an airship out of his butt after he rightfully should have been killed because every other NPC in that situation had been but apparently the game decided to pull its punches just for that one character who really wasn’t very likeable)
3) The NPC deaths. There was not a single death in the personal storyline which didn’t feel forced and unnatural. To explain I will simply quote HISHEdotcom’s How Casino Royale Should Have Ended:

Vesper Lynd: Now I must kill myself for no reason. <drowns>
Bond: <shouting in despair> But I killed all the bad guys!

In fact I think the entire video describes a lot of the plot for this game.

You are working with the orders to fight Zhaitain, then you join an order for no reason where you do some stuff completely unrelated to killing Zhaitain only to wind up once again working with the orders to fight Zhaitain which was right back where you started. But you already knew that you’d need the 3 orders working together, already knew Zhaitain was a threat and were already on the path to figuring out a way to bring Zhaitain down.

People dont like him for stealing YOUR spotlight. He isnt so annoying outside of that, but you basically act as his lap dog, with him literally calling you to his side the rest of the story. Hes like Martin Septim from Oblivion. Wasnt so bad…until he gets all the credit for everything you did despite his only heroic moment being his death.

I didn’t play GW 1 either so my only interaction and introduction to those characters was in 3 places:
1) my interaction with Caithe because my character was a Sylvari and Caithe makes multiple appearances in the lower level Sylvari storyline quests, with her level of involvement varying based on what traits you picked during character creation. I apparently chose the traits that lead to maximum involvement with Caithe so I really got know her to the maximum extent possible within the storyline.
2) My interaction with Logan during the low level human storyline where he was still pretty much a bland character I never learned very much about other than that he was in love with the queen, liked getting involved in local affairs, and pretty much nothing else.
3) All the rest of the members of Destiny’s Edge I met during the meeting where the brunt of DE were shown to be nothing more than children throwing temper tantrums. So not only were these characters shown to be completely incapable of acting by themselves but they were also shown to be impotent even within their own factions. Getting the support of these characters, if you even wanted such support, wasn’t going to get you access to the armies of the species these characters belonged to which was all you really wanted/needed in the first place.

The purpose of DE as representatives of their particular species is completely overwritten by the formation of the Pact. As I already mentioned, the only reason why you seem to want to get DE together or hold a meeting with the members of DE is to gain the support of these members so that you can access to the armies and resources of the species that these members represent. However once you instead move to getting the Pact together, you succeed have succeeded in gathering the army and equipment that you needed to defeat Zhaitain meaning the presence or absence of DE is entirely superfluous.

Pretty sure Destiny’s Edge weren’t in Guild Wars 1, what with it taking place 250 years ago and stuff. I think there’s a tie-in novel they’re in?

Spoilers ahead… Sorry, but I couldn’t get the stupid spoiler tag to work. ><

This aside isn’t completely related to the topic at hand, but was I the only one who expected Zhaitan to zombify your order’s mentor for the player character to kill at some point? I thought it was even kinda hinted at when it was revealed that Zhaitan knew the whereabouts of your order’s HQ because he had turned “someone” who did. I mean, I know that there are plenty of other candidates out there in the wide, open world for him to get the information from, but having that presented to you so quickly after your mentor died at Claw Island just made it seem obvious. I was really disappointed when it didn’t happen.

I mean, I love Tybalt as much as the next guy, but imagine the drama and suspense of having to put him down, especially after the sacrifice he made.
