Hi!

I’ve been an active user of Linux the last years and I think it’s sad that gaming companies and developers doesn’t seem to care about the constantly growing Linux market. There are more and more users of Linux based computers which I think game developers should start to take seriously.

Currently I’m running Windows 7, but I would love to get rid of Windows once and for all. For a company as huge as ArenaNet I think they should try to be a flagship and show other developers how the future is (they have already changed the MMORPG genre, so why not open up a whole new world of platforms?) going to be.

ArenaNet has created an OS X client for GW2, so creating a Linux client should be quite trivial as both are UNIX and OpenGL platforms. Also, Valve are porting Steam and their top tier titles to Linux.

I haven’t found a post or anything wether ArenaNet is going to make a Linux client or not, but my guess will be that they won’t unless they get enough requests for it.

So what do you think? Is it time for developers to see that Linux is becoming a huge market and they need to start focusing on that, or should t hey just do what they do today, tell the user to install Windows and don’t give a kitten.

Please keep this a serious and on-topic discussion, and don’t post if you don’t have something useful to add to this discussion.

Should we get an Linux client for Guild Wars 2?

Shamelessly parodied from the A client for OS X thread.

I too dual boot Linux and Windows and hope to get a native Linux client. I know that some people have gotten it to run in Wine, but there are also alot of bugs. Sure would be nice if Anet was actually working on this.

Just something worth pointing out, according to their press release ANet is using/used middleware solution to accelerate the creation of their Mac client… I am unaware of such solutions for linux at the moment.

However, the point is, because the middleware they are using is aimed at Mac OS X portability of games I doubt the point about Mac and linux being similar platforms holds water here, unless the middleware in question supports linux as well, which based on the website of the mentioned company it does not.

The future of gaming need to move off the windows platform it’s just a nightmare The best thing the gaming industry could do is develope there on version of Linux just for gaming and distribute the game and OS on a flash drive. Flash drives are becoming cheap reliable and large enough to handle this I would be more than willing to pay an extra $10 to $20 to cover the cost of a fflash drive just to set my PC to boot from USB plug in the drive and play

Yes linux Port plz!

I am using Ubuntu and I love to play into them. Actually Steam are porting all your games to linux, everyone is porting. If Guild Wars 2 comes to Linux will be perfect!

I have Windows, only to play Guild Wars 2 :/.

Ubuntu is growing, today at 2% of marketshare, few users but without a good choice of quality games. Everyone that have ubuntu, probably love games (especially rpg games), so, stay prepared to a mass of linux users buying the game.

Remember, windows 8 is coming and with rumors of poor performance, steam porting games, Linux can be the next games plataform.

Everyone knows that Linux have a huge game performance improvement compared to windows, eg X-plane 10 I have 10-20 FPS perfomance more compared with the exe version, and in another games, in both systems, always a good ported game have a huge overrall improvement in Linux versions.

Well the thing to remember is that they aren’t porting it to OS X, they are relying on a wine port called cedega. So potentially any changes they make to the code to improve cedega performance, could have the same effect on the game in wine.

The only thing the press release mentions is Cider, which is not the same thing as Cedega, it shares some of the same tech but that does not mean the work they do to get GW2 running through Cider is universally applicable to Cedega or the current versions of Wine.

Cider!=Cedega, apparrently. Cedega==Wine.

From today’s anouncement: “means that friends and guildmates can play together regardless of what operating system they favor.”

I would assume that means that either a linux client is coming, official support for running on Wine is coming, or ANet are pretending that the OS that runs all their servers doesn’t really exist, as plenty of us “favour Linux”. Or maybe they run their servers on BSD and official support for that is in the pipes?

@ANet: You could have saved yourself some money if you’d decided to just officially support Wine. It already works (with a few easily-availible patches), and then you wouldn’t have had to pay Transgaming for Mac support. Or you could have gone to CodeWeavers, and got Mac, and Linux (and BSD, and Solaris, and…) support, probably for less than what you’re paying Transgaming, as all it would take is for two patches to be cleaned up and intergrated into trunk and it’s done.

+10000^99999 for an official Linux client!!!

I mean, c’mon! Read this:

Bringing Guild Wars 2 to the Mac is huge for us, because it introduces the game to an entire group of players who are often ignored by game developers.

That statement they made is best suited for Linux, never Mac. Linux gamers are an entire group who are often ignored by game developers. It was never Mac, they get plenty of love from select game developers. But Linux? No.

That statement should have been like this:

Bringing Guild Wars 2 to Linux is huge for us, because it introduces the game to an entire group of players who are often ignored by game developers.

^ Now that’s more accurate.

I think it would be a very shrewd move by ArenaNet to make a Linux client for Guild Wars 2, especially with the recent Windows 8 saga.

Given the choice I would never even use Windows, but as a gameplayer I have to. If Guild Wars 2 was available for Linux, I would be able to shred my windows partition!!

Considering that Mac OSX runs on the Linux code base, I don’t see how there would be many problems making it compatible.

A user could prolly could make it work right now if you used the MAC OSX client on Linux.

I would love play this game with a native Linux client. I think that aNet should develop their Mac client, Windows client and any Linux client at the same time so that they can make good use of the #ifdef directive. Meanwhile I think that if aNet ported their Windows client to OpenGL and avoided using system calls that Wine has problems with, us Linux users would have a more enjoyable gaming experience. The frame rate is atrocious so I boot into Windows 7 when I want to play.

OSX doesn not run on Linux, it runs on BSD. Very different UNIXes.

Now, if they’d done a generic UNIX port, or, you know, just officially supported Wine (Transgaming seem to use something similar that’s Mac-specific), then they could have made everyone happy, rather than just the small number of Apple fans.

or just buy a Windows..

How about: “No”. I like not having to worry about keyloggers and virii, or paying through the nose for software I don’t need, thanks.

Computers won’t come pre-loaded with Linux unless there is a significant, visible reason for manufacturers to irritate Microsoft (they get discounts for being a Microsoft-only shop). What Valve is doing is a start, Google’s comments about Ubuntu help, ANet could have been another pebble in the avalanche.

Ideally with a native client.

People from Valve software made an amazing DirectX OpenGL translation layer. It is specific to their source engine, but as they want to promote Linux as a gaming platform they might be able to give good advices on the subject.

UNIX is a trademark that belongs to The Open Group. Modern Mac operating systems are examples of UNIX; GNU/Linux, as its name implies, is “unix like”. Remember, the name GNU is a recursive acronym which stands for “GNU is not UNIX”.

UNIX: OS X, Solaris, etc. Unix like: Linux, Minix 3, etc.

I wish there was a single generic term that defined all Unices and unix like operating systems without stepping on any trademarks.

Yeah, the big shame is that the only thing really stopping Linux from officially being a UNIX is the certification costs. “Everyone knows” it would pass, so no-one is bothering with the cert. And it’s used more than the official UNIXes these days anyway, so it’s becoming the standard.

With their big push on security, I really feel the need to pipe up about “Linux doesn’t suffer from keyloggers.” <Waits for someone to try the old dead horse about size of target>

And here you have the hen egg problem.
Linux can only spread for gamers if Windows becomes obsolete for them.

On another note, playing GW2 on PlayOnLinux right now, it automatically downloads and installs a separate Wine1.5.1 with the mousefix and some other fixes not yet in Wine main. Only things that stinks in this setup is that you need the -dx9single command parameter and that somehow ext3 doesn’t like the gw2.dat blob and loading times are somewhat slower than under Windows.
On the other side, my Linux never killed the graphics card driver, my Windows does that all the time.

Actually there are 25 or so bullet points that an OS must adhere to in order to be considered a Unix. Linux is missing like 4 or 5 last time I saw the list.

I would LOVE to see a linux port of Guild Wars 2, even a native version of GW would be nice too! Sure GW runs great in Wine, but to me that’s really not a good thing, we shouldn’t strive to make Linux more compatible with windows, that’s just bogging down a VASTLY superior system with a pile of monolithic junk (windows code).
There is also proof that there’s a decent and noticeable performance increase when running a game natively in linux vs. windows (check valve’s linux blog “steamed Penguins” under the article “Faster Zombies!”) also the linux community is getting huge! I remember when I first started with ubuntu in 2014 there was a very small (but wonderful) community, now the community is huge, there are forums everywhere, for any distro, to do anything!
Right now I have a windows 7 partition JUST big enough for the OS and GW2 (imagine my surprise when I found out my copy of Windows 7 was 19GB alone and still had NONE of my drivers) I would love to get rid of this partition and be able to do my daily tasks on the same partition I play GW2 on! Also there are computer manufacturers that offer linux as an option (dell used to offer ubuntu, not sure if they do anymore) HP still offers linux, and there’s system76

really here’s the simple thing that needs to be done, a petition, with a pledge to pay for a linux client as SOON as it’s released, and hell maybe even a small donation up front to get the project going, I know I would do that and so would ALOT of linux users (look at humble bundle, the largest average donation by OS is ALWAYS from the linux side, we get most of the software that is needed for normal task for free so we’re willing to pay for things like quality native games!)

@rebelkhaotic.7329: linux is monolithic whereas Windows (depending on the version) can be monolithic or hybrid. Linus Torvalds and Andrew S. Tanenbaum had a famous debate way back in 1992 because Torvalds favored a monolithic kernel whereas Tanenbaum favored a microkernel.
