Obviously since the start of Headstart people’s accounts have been jacked and e-mail verification isn’t enough or an extra hard password because this continues to happen.
While thankfully I haven’t had it happen to me yet, guildies of mine have and they have, some of which had access to the guild bank.
Anet needs to get with the 21st century and add Authenticators to the accounts. Whether an app version for people who have smartphones and/or ones that I would pay 5-10 dollars for that press the button gives me a random set of numbers that is 1 time use and doesnt last long, like 20 seconds.
Ebay uses it, Blizzard does, and a whole bunch others. When I played WoW I was one of the first to buy one and it cost me $4.99
If Anet actually cares about its loyal gamers. Get this worked on now!
I honestly thought we would have these at launch, I do hope there are plans to implment this tech.
I could see this happening in the future of course. The same way it did with those other companies. Once ANet gains enough fans, funding and stability, I’m sure they will implement a system of the sort.
GW1, you had to know a characters name on the account to log in. Which was great if your login name didn’t match a character’s name. (To the Derps out there).
But again, let ANet sell some gems, work on the NEEDED items first, and it will come soon enough.
They already have the funds. There is no reason this shouldnt already be in the works. And this is more needed then some bugged Skill Points. Those can be fixed at anytime and wont lose customers/fans. Having your account hacked will because people wont feel secured.
BattleNet has an authenticator which can be annoying at times, and I think it was even hacked once, but any extra security is better than no extra security.
I use googles authentication so far no issues I wish you the best of luck.
I could say the same thing about Blizzard and WoW. Blizz had a good set of funding from the start but didn’t release an authenticator till much later.
Blizzard didn’t also have the same technology available from the start like GW2 has today
I shouldn’t have to purchase and maintain yet more stuff to cover Anet’s poor security model. Using email addresses as user ids violates one of the basic concepts of computer security 101. User ids should be secret yet Anet forces the use of a user id that hundreds of your closest friends and family already know. Their response is to suggest creating a special email address just for GW2. This means that some other company can provide the storage space and cost of maintaining the special email account. Not to mention the GW2 player has yet another password to remember and an odd email account to check for those “out of norm login attempt detected” messages.
Anet knew this model had problems early into the GW1 game. They improved it somewhat with the added requirement of knowing one of the account’s character names. Why this simple security enhancement was left out of GW2 is beyond understanding. Why with all of the hacked accounts they had in GW1 and the NCSoft master account they persisted in using this model in GW2 is even more indefensible.
I wouldnt care if they added 5 layers of hurdles for me to jump through to log in including character names, my suggestion, 1 out of 5 security questions that you can type the question and answer to each one yourself, etc. With the amount I paid on the game/game related items and the others around theworld(I got the CE version as far as game type goes). The most important thing I care about is the fact my account is harder to get into then Fort Knox.
Also they could add various types of layers to be optional so players can have as many or as little as they want to go through. I personally prefer more.
