I think if you are getting your hopes up on ascended ever being gold/karma/badge attainable, you are going to be let down. The entire ascended item system is designed around extending the longevity of the item and stat hunt, to allow players a long-term goal to work for (requiring them to log in and play daily), thereby keeping the game interesting and fun for people longer. Time gating.

When they do release ascended for WvW, it will be some other currency you have to obtain that you cannot rush or farm. They are dragging this system out for a reason.

It is the same deal with the infinite pick. Why not release the axe and sickle? Well… then what would people have to look forward to, talk about on the forums, get excited about 2 months down the road?

In the FTP model, the longer they keep you into the game, the higher the chances are you that continue to spend gold/money on the game. It is a business after all. I am being overly cynical, but you get the idea.

What incentive does Anet have to allow fractals rings to be TP’able? Or forgable?

All that would do is give people who already have all their ascended stuff, more stuff (if the rings could be broken down into something useful). Or it allows people instead of spending 30 days doing dalies to get their ring, buying it immediately off the TP, and getting bored with the lack of stat hunting and quit.

I think OP is asking if ascended gear could be bought directly with gold instead of the various combinations of fractal relics, laurels, guild commendations and ectos. I think. :S

My pockets are deep , i dont pve so no fractals, i dont have time for dailies because i spend that two hours roaming and ganking players which even if i did accomplish would take me forever to get a full set, guild stuff i miss and ectos, not sure what u mean.

We can buy exotic and can buy LGM, why cant we buy ascended stuff?

10 $ each = 800 gems for each ascended accessory

i would grab this, since its easier to do 8 hours Real life job and earn more,

than farm for 8 hours and not even getting one desired jewelry

You can already get the backpack and the amulet for nothing but gold.

Rings and earrings both have 2 separate paths to obtaining them. I suspect more will come eventually.

Agree.They should let the players set the prices. Non soul bound on acquire. This would greatly benefit both the PvE market and the WvW market.

This. They specifically said at no point ever would items be available in gem store that offered an advantage over others. And since ascended is BIS gear… no. So anyone who has a ton of gems could just outright buy the best gear in game through transactions. You should have to earn BIS gear, with hard work or at least daily’s (laurels) etc. Money should not be the main theme behind the best gear. I personally could buy a legendary or two off the TP by simply tossing cash>gold, and that itself feels wrong. Even at the insanely high price, I believe it should have to be earned. people who spent the time to craft and people who spent the hours to afford it in game, they deserve the shiny weapons that offer no real benefit. But gearing out on gold is just bad, people need to earn something in game through work, not just tossing gold in to win.

As for fractal rings etc, I think you should be able to mystic forge them into something or at least sell for karma idk. I hear a lot of people have like 20 rings and can’t do anything with them. But at least they earned them.

it might not be too far down the road that you might be able to craft ascended gear, would be my guess. Then by all means you’d be able to sell it on the TP.

They said it would not offer a UNFAIR advantage. That however is very open to debate to where it’s subjective nature can very well be worked around. There are many of the items that do not appear to have any significant impact one way or another vs anything else CURRENTLY available. This (imo) is one of places where the “vagueness” comes into play.

Even though 1 item may not be that much of a change from what’s available currently, multiple items (either grouped together or over the chain of timed progression) will definitely have a noticeable difference from the beginning……ie…..If we keep adding up the small differences eventually we will have a large difference.

Another thing I see thrown around quite frequently is the term “convenience”. In many debates that term is used to separate an item from the term “advantage”. This is something I do not fully understand as the two terms are rather synonymous.

As the game in itself has individualistic goals, objective means to an end change from player to player. This only adds to the subjective nature of what may or may not constitute “unfair” here.

tl;dr…..The whole thing is vague for a reason…..imo that reason is so they can change whatever/whenever w/o being tied to specifics and the possibility of further backlash, which was seen early on.

You can see though that they offer these items for a limited time, so while I agree that a collection of various items can lead to a more advantage situation, I think this is the “small” countermeasure to that. Why do we only see one type of gathering tool? Why do we only see discounts on 1 type of item at a time, or expansions? One could argue that this helps so that unless you are buying every addon as it comes you are unlikely to achieve every advantage build up. But I also would say that it could be simply they haven’t designed other tools yet, or to completion, or a combination of all the things I listed. This is all just speculation of course and is my opinion only. But I think players who have played from the start, or players who keep with the game deserve to have those small advantages. You see it in every MMO, that guy who started in beta has 100 items we will never see unless re-released (see Aion vet rewards…………………………). You know who has been around a while when you see them and their gear and minis, items etc, and you think “when the crap did I miss all that stuff?”

I think down the line people will see it like this. “Wow that is an awesome pickaxe!” “Thanks, I’ve been playing a while. It was limited time, so luckily I had a chance to be there and take advantage of history in the game.”

I really do wish that Ascended items could be put up for sale on the TP though. I hear stories from guildmates who do Fractals regularly complaining that they have dozens of Ascended rings, but they can’t do anything with them. They can’t sell them, their alts are all equipped, and merching them seems like a waste.

Wvw badges for ascended gear? Definitely! :P Somewhere along the lines of 350~badges per ascended ring/amulet and ~500+ per earing. This is all just my speculation (based on the price of exotic trinkets in wvw badges atm). They did they somewhere down the road they will let wvw players earn ascended stuff so that’s another plus if it happens. Also, you can easily do the dailies (generally) all in wvw maps so the laurels should certainly help you get your ascended stuff faster. If not, well the daily spvps are even faster and easier to acquire. It is so easy it’s almost ridiculous (but I guess still fair for the pure spvpers.)

I don’t think anyone is suggesting ALL ascended piece should be able to be sold, but stuff you get as drops would be nice to have on the TP. I know some peoples goal may be to gear BiS and be done with the game, so they may buy gems play for a little while and say, that’s enough. I don’t think people aren’t playing the game in general, which also earns them something. As it is now, you still have to play the game to get most items. There can’t be that many people buying gems to exchange for cash, skipping all the content (crafting to 80, let’s say) and buying BiS gear.

Well its definately agreeable that ascended stuff should be obtainable by measures other than spamming the fractals. I love that they introduced the ability to get them from Laurels.

I am one that just hates fractals.

Now, if only an infused backpiece can be obtained without the fracs…..

People would say it’s pay to win (and it probably is); however, the same people who will complain that it’s ptw are the same ones who argue that ascended gear isn’t needed and can be ignored.

I was going to refute that, but then I realized that any Dev that accidentaly tried to injest such and absurd statement would just spit it out, so nevermind.

So you want pay to win? No!

Until it’s acquired with Karma, Gold or maybe WvW Badges+Gold (not just badges, they’re too random), Ascended is just not on my radar. I know ANet only pay attention to numbers, not opinions, so there will not be a single piece of Ascended gear on my account, until it’s implemented in a non-treadmill, non-drip feed fashion.

If you can get the item reasonably without paying, then having an option to pay doesn’t make it pay to win. If you think it is, you may as well call buying your exotic armor on TP pay to win. Besides pay to win usually refers to real money, and the thread author wants the option to buy ascended with in game gold.

Being able to buy ascended items with gold largely defeats one of the stated reasons for the introduction of the new tier. That is, to provide players with a medium term goal to bridge the gap between acquiring exotic tier and legendary tier.

Allowing people to shortcut this by spending gold may still be possible, but IMO it’s an area that ANet may wish to be cautious before they implement it (and the same can be said of crafting ascended items because of the possible interactions with the economy).

I imagine that buying/selling Ascended gear, as well as crafting it, probably will not be introduced for a number of months yet, in part to allow people to “fill” that gap between Exotic and Legendary. When an expansion is released that provides new Legendaries (and thus something new for players to work for), we can probably expect to see Ascended items become the new Exotic, and thus more means of obtaining them.

Anyone remember where they wrote that someday ascended can be traded?

I don’t remember ever reading they would make Ascended tradeable, and I would bet that based on what they have done with Fractals skins and everything else ascended they will not let you trade. (even if they do eventually add crafted ascended)

The only real anomoly there is the legendaries. One could wonder why leaving those sellable on the TP is in place, but my theory is that they want to have that huge gold sink there for people that will take it. It is such an off-the-wall rare occurance that someone would buy or sell one, that they don’t have to worry about too much complaining.

Also remember that legendaries do not have better stats, so there is no pay to win on those. When they get ascended damage applied to them it will be different, but by that point other ascended weapons will be around as well.

I would bet they won’t be TPable though. I can imagine the uproar that would follow if you needed 100-200 gold to buy the next damage level of your weapon (if you were too impatient to wait out whatever gate they setup).

No badges for ascended in this patch again.
