Are boss timers ruining the game?
I don’t think most players do this. It seems like a lot of players because they’re all grouped up> There are also plenty of players in WvW, in dungeons, in fractals, in Orr.
If anything those events bring people back to other zones and they run around and do events while waiting for the spawn.
I agree it’s not fun, but there’s absolutely nothing in the game that states you are required to play this way. Others find it fun and so they do, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I haven’t, personally, found that the game world is empty at all – a little quieter during the week, as should be expected, perhaps, but otherwise, there are always people around.
If ANet started restricting chests to one per day I think there’d be huge outcry. People are already struggling with loot issues etc, and I think to further limit people’s chances would be problematic. Sure, they could just overhaul the loot system entirely (I wouldn’t mind if they did, tbh), but limiting people’s options is not something ANet would want to do.
All the timers did was remove the need to sit there and AFK it for an hour. Now you can just pop in at the last minute, hit it once and collect your loot.
The loot change is was ruined it. In the open world, reward-wise there’s no point in doing anything else since why bother when you can get free rares for doing nothing. The next loot update should fix this, but as long as a zerg can hit a single mob and have everyone get loot, the problem will continue to persist.
People like the OP are ruining the game IMO. Yea let’s penalize other people because ‘I’ don’t think X aspect of the game fits my narrow definition of what is “fun”.
They’ve already nerfed it down to once/day, per boss, per account, which is more than enough. But I suppose you’d rather we do the same dynamic events over & over & over again to get loot off RNG. But then…anti-farm code. Yeah.
TL;DR: Bad suggestion is bad
I, personally, don’t use Boss timers. If a Dragon chest event happens to spawn while I am in the vicinity, I will join in, but otherwise, I just do whatever I happen to be doing in-game at the time. It’s not that accurate, to me, and I would rather have fun playing than wait around for a particular event. We all have our preferred playstyles, and that’s perfectly ok. =)
Let’s face it, there are players who just jump from one boss to another just to get the rare gear, therefore the zerg moves from one zone to another as soon as the boss spawns, thus leaving game world empty and abandoned.
Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with fighting bosses and rewards, but switching from one zone to another just to get few hits on the boss and rare loot isn’t that fun.
Therefore, in order to prevent boss grinding and switching from one zone to another to get the boss, maybe you should be limited to one guarantied bonus chest per day.
Any other suggestions are more than welcome.
Perhaps chasing bosses for rare loot is not fun for you, but why does that mean that others, who may very well find enjoyment in things that you do not, shouldn’t be allowed to do it ?
If you don’t like it you do not need a new restriction in order to choose to not do it. I know that I do not enjoy world boss chasing so I can choose to not engage in that activity without denying anyone else the choice.
I really do not understand the logic of, “I don’t enjoy doing X, so you shouldn’t be allowed to do it.”
As to the, “leaving game world empty and abandoned,” comment…
If a couple dozen, or even a bit more, people chasing bosses leaves that impression about the population, the game has much bigger problems than your concern.
There is nothing worth doing in this game other than bosses and CoF. If they limit bosses to 1 chest per day i’ll simply have to grind CoF. I’m not going to waste my time doing other events to get pathetic 1silver 80 copper as a reward, which doesn’t even cover wp cost.

I also play that way, I just do events in the zone, and if I see that the boss has spawned, I go for the kill, but I don’t jump from one boss to another just to get the loot. First, bosses are too easy, so not a real challenge, second, I play mostly to have fun, I don’t mind getting rare once in a while, but just killing bosses to get rares is limiting to me.
That way you’re not “enjoying” the game (everyone has a different definition of enjoying the game), you’re just chasing rare loot.
I just don’t think that ANet designed GW2 so we could jump from one boss to another. They created this huge world with events, so why focus on those bosses?
I look to have an idea of the time before I get on. There are times that I will be in that void where nothing is spawning. And times when everything is spawning. So after wasting a lot of money (and time, mostly all that time) in the beginning I would rather have an idea of what I am working with.
I usually only do about 2 or 3 bosses then I go do whatever I want to do. And usually only if it helps with dailies. Its probably one of the fastest ways to do the Group Event daily so I prefer to do it that way.
I wish there was more options then just running around waiting on timers all day or running dungeons. But in the current moment its still one of the better ways to generate income or ectos. Guaranteed rares are hard to pass up.
I don’t think its hurting the game so much. As it just makes it seem that way. Even if they all seem to come in surges every hour or so. When I go to Orr there is still quite a few people (granted less then before) that are there all the time. And I still run into quite a few people leveling alts in mid-level maps. Still tons of people that run dungeons every day lfg’s, etc. I don’t think everyone chooses to play the timers as much as it seems.
Well we all roll in different ways, nerfing this way of playing would make “more” players to leave… I know some who loves Living Story and GW2 all in all but the truth is while waiting for this new content they do dailies and have event timer and do all or most of them each day, they don’t think it’s boring they don’t complain about it, they actually likes it.
I don’t do it like that becouse I enjoy the game in more aspects, like I have alot of alt’s and leveling them and trying to find good builds and more and more.
But also I am looking at the event timer and if I have time I go to the active event(s) and do them and when I am done I go back to what I was doing before.
Before I knew about these event timers I was almost never at any meta event’s, only when I was passing by, heard a guild friend tell me or someone on mapchat told the whole map.
I don’t think it ruins it, I think it does the contrary, here you can actually that people plays the game, farm or not to farm whatever, the pure point is that we have to work together to fight the meta event’s.
On the other hand I think most Meta-events has to be better scaled and improved… They are still to darn easy, and I don’t mean they have to do mora damage but that they need some more stuff to be done like Claw of Jormag is totaly okay, but some or most of them are realy only get in position and fire-away!
Anyhow, rewards are needed and the amount of reward is perfect now in my opinion, we don’t need another nerf.

As others here have stated, I only do WBs If I happen to be there. HOWEVER, There have been times when I’ve gotten bored of whatever the hell i’m doing (usually nothing) and go after the other bosses.
Usually I find a good line up and pursue it. Once I’ve hit that dead end I give up and forget about the rest of the bosses. Sitting around, killing things, or twiddling my thumbs waitin’ for a boss to appear is most definitely not my style. Well then again I have no style.

I made 16 gold in a little over an hour yesterday running a full CoE 2 times.
Admittedly, I got like 8 cores, which isn’t what I would call common, but still, there are more options than just CoF to make money.

There will always be people who focus only on the rewards. Let them be.
In just about every guild I’ve been in there was always at least one player who watched the timers as closely as you watch a huge kittening spider on your wall. They will usually announce “X minutes until Y event”, at which point those that wanted to go would finish up what they were doing, drift on over, do the event, then fade back into their normal routines until the next announcement. Withou players like that it would have sucked as I would have missed 90% of all the dragon events unless I specifically camped the map waiting for the spawn.

It is ruining it for me, but i think it ruins it for people just geting started with the game.
Just imagine coming across the Frozen Maw for the first time. Yep, loads of fun. Lag, skill spamming, and you have no idea what is happening.
Therefore I am also on the oppinion thta the timers should be randmoized.

First of all, it’s very few who actually have lag, and then iether you back off since you don’t know what happens or you do as you have learned the first ten levels and join in and do the event.
I remember when playing this game on the headstart when there where lot’s and lot’s of players everywhere and almost every event fealt like a meta event, but that didn’t scare me off, it did the contrary; I got hyped and thought it was so cool that they managed to get so many players engaged in the same thing without having to group or trying to “steal” another players kills.
I also remember trying to do Fire Elemental when the game was new, we where about 20-25 players on level trying to fight it but everyone died and retreated, died and retreated and we all tried so hard to kill it and finally made it and it was such an experience!
If I where a new player I would be excited to see so many players working togather on an open map to defeat a boss.

Don’t want do triple quote so:
@Edgar:
I started on the first day (not headstart or beta) and I remember being in Metrica (rolled an asura mesmer, still my main).
When I first run into the elemental I was like: WHOAA?!! Alright let’s do this! And I died. Like 5 times (remember, back then it had knockdown and you would just burn). I had like 10-15 low level people (same as me) doing the event with me. It was hard, challanging. and tons of fun.
What happens now?
There are 20-30 lv 80s (I’m on a mid populated server, I believe it’s worse on higher populated ones), who kill the Fire Ele under 2 mins. No challange, no need to think or dodge, just stand there, spam 1 and win. It may only be me but that is not my idea of fun. So imagine this happening when you are new to the game. Dunno about you, but I would be highly disappointed to see a huge threatening world boss being ground like a moa.
My solutions:
- make the timer more random
- take away the 1 fixed rare from low level events
(edited by Bubi.7942)
I don’t think the problem is with the timers.. or the rewards. Well, not the rewards from the bosses anyways.
I think if the fights were longer and more involved (i.e. a little more interesting) and other events throughout the world were also rewarding for your time spent then you’d see things be a little more varied. People might stick in one zone to do the other events after a boss event because it would cost them WP fees to move on and running the events in that zone and waiting for the next boss event would be the same / more rewarding.
Just a thought. I think this problem mostly boils down to effort/reward, just like many other things in the game.
They could also randomize the boss timers to make them unpredictable. But if that were the case, it sure would be nice if they added other things we can farm for good loot instead. And also, when they do show up and you happen to catch them, it would be nice if the loot was better.
The problem with these dragons is that they show up quite often, and the novelty quickly wears off. Especially since they always appear in exactly the same place, and do exactly the same things. And because they are so static, they are not really menacing. They just stand in one place, soaking up damage, till they are defeated. They are completely unaware of all the players. So you could be standing safely to the side, and the dragon would keep spitting its breath weapon forward.
And that’s the thing, the excitement of these dragons wears off once you realize there isn’t much excitement, and that they really pop up quite often, and are quite dumb. This could be fixed if dragons were given more mobility, and more battle awareness. Plenty of good suggestions have already been made on this forum in the past, on how to improve the dragons. How to make them move around, even if they can’t move like normal enemies can. How to make them target players, even though they can’t see the players. And how to make them respond to clusters of players that are standing in a safe spot.

I agree the timers do more damage than good to the game. Sadly people prefer this no challenge lots of rewards situation. World bosses are not challenging and some are just plain annoying. Priestess of Lyssa and Fire Shaman come to mind. Neither are particularly fun in my opinion. Just huge damage sponges or in Fire Shaman’s case the same thing 3 times.
Look at Southsun for a good example as to why people want easy content. After the previous Living Story ended people stopped going there. The Karka Queen hasn’t been done for 240 hours on my server. Simply because it is to much work and the Karka are to challenging compared to the rest of the games content.
More and more do I see people hopping from boss to boss without bothering to do other things in the area. The amount of times I have unblocked pre-events is mind boggling. All because people are not doing the content around it. When I see a timer far in the minus I just jump to that area and unblock it if I know which events are doing it. I for one would love to know which event blocks The Shatterer. Only after I cleared it and sometimes after I did the first pre-event do people come running. Most of them just stand there at the boss spawn area waiting for others to do the pre-events. This might be just my server, but somehow I doubt it.
I’m a supporter of getting people out in the open world, the timers are not the way to do it. People need to want to be in an area for longer periods than just 4-5 minutes in most cases. 15-30 minutes for events like Claw and Lyssa. Long term achievements would be perfect for this and it would actually be horizontal progression. Any kind of reward can be tied to it to be honest.
I would also say completely redesign world bosses to actually make them a threat. No more of this autocast 1 afk situation. I’ve made whole dinners while afk at boss events.
Lastly of course I have always advocated random timers.
If they think it’s fun, and I doubt that, I see no problem with it.
Anet can nerf the loot but I seriously hate loot nerfs, so let them do their game and I will play like I like it.
No chest loot nerf please.
I don’t do all the events, I dislike the temple ones so I don’t hit all chests and this is my income.
I don’t farm CoF that often, once in a while I’ll run it a few times, the open world bosses I hit take about two hours to hit them all so it takes longer to gain income this way.
Changing the bonus chest to once per day per account is a stupid bad idea, especially since it will directly impact my income.
