Heavy Armor need hoods… and shoulder plates that cover the arm too. Medium armor needs something other than trenchcoats and masks. Light armor also needs something more than masks, and something more than just robes. For me, breaking the trenchcoat trend and introducing hoods for heavy armor users (or why not everyone?) would be the most awesome thing.

Any other ideas? Opinions?

The Heavy Armor Hood needs to be Heavy Armor themed though, like a Chainmail or Scalemail hood. Another example would be a leather hood, but its got metal plates running along the edges of the hood.

Why, really? Works great with cloth only for these guys:

I think there are easier ways to create the diversity we want without forcing ArenaNet to continuously create brand new content. Remove armor restrictions. Increase stat bonuses on light armor slightly and decrease them slightly on heavy armors to account for the variation in armor values, but remove the mechanic that players can only wear a certain type of armor.

Do that, and we’ll have robed guardians, armored mesmers, rangers which look like they might belong to a military scout unit — all sorts of creativity options open up. Then the only thing to do is periodically add themed armor like ArenaNet is already doing.

Failing that, an alternative is to borrow an idea from LOTRO and create a costume panel that overrides the worn armor of the character to create a more personalized appearance. Give the transmutation stones an option to turn an armor piece into a costume piece that acts only as a cosmetic skin for the costume panel. Once made a costume piece, it wears as that — armor restrictions, again, would not apply. So you could take light gloves, medium chest and legs, and combine it all with a heavy shoulder and helm to create something all your own. And since transmutation are involved, and retain their current use, ArenaNet can still make money off people trying to look the way they want.

Lotro idea could work, works for EQ2 (never played EQ1 so don’t know how it works there) too. First idea wouldn’t work, because then you would have to rework all classes and make significant changes to skills, balance and all that.

1) Okay, so the guy is big and has metal shoulder pads, so that means that is heavy armor, right? Even though 75% of his armor is cloth and leather, and there is no other indication that he is wearing heavy armor in that picture?

2) My Point still stands. He has a Mask/Helmet made of the same material as the rest of his armor underneath that hood, making it heavy armor themed. His robe has Metal all over it, making it heavy armor themed.

Ah, Lord of the Rings Online, I loved that game. Its a Game that does almost everything right, and better than most other MMO’s that released 3-5 years after LOTRO did.

Well, I am pretty sure that you still can’t have a Light armor class in that game wear heavy armor, even if it was converted for cosmetic purposes. That game does have Hauberks and other lighter armored Outfits that you can wear across all classes.

Last thing is, you need to consider why Warriors can only wear heavy armor in the game. I’ll give you a hint. It involves PvP and WvW.
