I’m still kinda a new to being level 80 in the game and haven’t gained many ascended items. I was going for my third ascended trinket just a little earlier, and bought the same ring that I already had equipped. It showed it like it was possible and would replace my exotic ring I had alongside the other ascended ring. Once I’d bought it I quickly realized that it was not possible to have 2 of the exact same ascended trinkets.
I find gw2 can be really punishing to newbies at times, for this I would like to suggest that maybe a notification pops up that you already have a certain ascended trinket equipped when previewing it. Even a red border around the identical trinket would probably notify someone that somethings up.
It’s relatively frustrating because laurels aren’t easy to get, and now all i can do is scrap it since it’s soulbound… I put in quite a bit of effort to get it, and getting absolutely nothing for it leaves you feeling deflated…

I hope you didn’t trash it yet. You can throw it in the mystic forge to upgrade it to an infused ascended ring. When doing that you will lose the upgrade component in the ring (if you have one), but it will change it to soundbound on equip so you can at least throw it in your bank for an alt. It’s hefty ingredients that are found in the fractals though so it might take a bit to gather the mats.

Recipe: asc ring + 1 shard of crystallized + 3 globs of coagulated + 5 vials of condensed mists essence = new infused ring

Now about your suggestion I do agree that many people make that same mistake and adding a red border could help with that. The description does say “Unique” which is standard in mmo for meaning only 1 per character, so I would also suggested to just make the word “Unique” a different text color like the pink so that it stands out more as well.

If you do infuse the ring, I believe it’s also possible to equip the infused version and the non-infused version at the same time, so you could use both on the same character.

Getting another ring might be easier than infusing that one, though; even if you’re aiming to collect all that mists essence, you’ll probably end up with 10 pristine fractal relics first.

I don’t really see why the ascended trinkets are “unique” in the first place; when you can get two that differ only by the type of infusion slot, it has negligible effect on build options.

getting a new ring would require another 25 laurels, which would pretty much be another month… I’ll try the infusion. I’ve never done fractals of the mist, but I guess I’ll give it a go. Makes me feel better that there’s an opportunity to not let my efforts have gone to waste. I appreciate the comments, they were really helpful ^^

Laurels aren’t the only way to get rings. If you get up to level 10 or more in fractals of the mists, you can earn a “pristine fractal relic” once per day. 10 pristine fractal relics can be traded for a ring of your choice.

Any time you get a pristine fractal relic, you also have a random chance (around 1/3 I think) of getting a random ascended ring.

NOTE: You can play any level if someone else in your group is high enough, but if you play a fractal above your personal level you only gets the rewards for your personal level. This means you’ll have to complete at least 9 levels before you can start getting pristine fractal relics.

The mists essence is a low-probability random drop from anything in the fractals. Vials can drop at any level, but globs only at 10+ and shards only at 20+. You can combine 5 of a lower-level mat into 1 of the next higher level in the mystic forge, so you could theoretically get everything you need just by playing level 1 of the fractals, but it would take a very long time unless you got very lucky. The pristine fractal relics are probably much faster.

I should also point out that the rewards for fractals of the mists are being revamped in next week’s content patch.
