Black Dye
Abyss seems a bit more brownish than a gray, but a lot of people are convinced it is black. But yes, I would like an actual black as well.
Midnight ice is actually very very very black…. I actually think its too black… U should check it out.
I wanted to try out the Midnight Ice Dye, but I`m afraid the same will happen as with the Midnight Fire Dye, I`ll look at it though, thanks for the suggestion.
1) Black dye with gems
2) …?
3) Proffit
On my system it depends on the graphic options. The more I set them on high, the more it looks grey. With medium options black is almost black (black enough for me to consider it black; although it could be darker/ more black/ whatever), but with higher options it is indeed more greyish than black, and that’s not really okay.. at least for a “black” dye..

Black dye isn’t black, it’s gray.
bump, im really curious what the other players think about the current ‘black’ dyes
If you wear parts that have a reflective effect to them, such as glossy leather pieces or metallic armor Midnight Ice Dye is the way to go. Its pure black, but looks very good with the reflections that metal plates and leather gives.
It doesnt look good on materials with very little reflection, such as very authentic cloth items and such. It just goes really black, like absence of light, essence of black purity.
Leather looking materials with a glossy effect can be obtained for all armor types. So my suggestion is, find good glossy gear, slap MID on it or keep cloth armors and stick to abyss/black. I still use most of the starting set look on my mesmer, have changed gloves, boots and shoulders, but everything has a shiny leather look to it, with MID and white dye and some gold (the starter dye gold) where it fits.
On a few odd pieces midnight ice dye gives a dark blue highlight on raised areas, however this is only on a few pieces.
It may help to adjust your gamma settings. If the result remains unsatisfactory, you may need to adjust your expectations.
It’s not so simple as saying “make it black.” Creating the appearance of a black material in a video game involves many things, including texture, normals, specularity, environment, simulated dilation (ie. HDRI,) the end user’s hardware and settings, etc. and in the end, arenanet—let alone the dye system itself—only has control over some of these things.
The simple fact is, they can’t really have artists create separate texture and material settings for each swatch of color. Each one is applied to the texture using basically the same method, and they have to include room for some margin of error in the end-user’s system. For all we know, Abyss (or, I think there’s also a “Pitch?”) may very well be how the dye system applies 100% black to textures.
Midnight Olive is pretty blackish.
Midnight ice is the blackish dye in the game right now costs about 3 to 5 gold
You know what I miss, being able to mix dyes.
Abyss BROWN?!!? Are you kidding me? You must be playing with gamma up or something, it’s so black on mine that I felt normal Black was so much more realistic, and it wasn’t grey either. I’m so confused about how people have a problem with this.
Kaimoon Blade – Warrior
Fort Aspenwood
Abyss is black (light reflection is white)
Midnight Ice is black (light reflection has hint of blue)
Black is not quite black. More like hex color #333
I run with midnight ice(I got it as a drop and used it before I saw how valuable it could be) it’s fairly black but has a weird glow effect, I would rather dull black dye.
Nope. Pure black looks pretty much crap because you can’t shade it at all.
And please change the picture of the Midnight Fire Dye, it`s very misleading, I`m sure I`m not the only one who wasted 3g on a dye they didn`t want.
(or allow us to preview it straight from the TP)
Wish I had been able to preview as well, neither Midnight Fire or Ice look anything like their picture when applied to my heavy armor.
I spent 3g expecting an awesome dark red, not kitten brown….
