Black Lion Chests
It is a monetizing mechanic for the game, keys are not terribly common in the game outside of gem store, but they are there. There is always the currency exchange feature, turn gold to gems (the second tab from the top) -> get keys.
And to be fair it makes sense for the black lion chests to be gem tied, considering you get gem store items (including buffs, services etc) out of them, plus tonics and some unique buffs that I doubt you can directly buy with gems.
Black lion salvage kits are one of the better things you can get out of them. You can also get more them keys from them as well, the next best thing is probably repair canister.
You don’t need a pick when you can grab the key for gold, indirectly (hey no one said it would be cheap to do the gold route, but cheaper than throwing real money there).

There is also a very small chance of getting an endless tonic from the chests.
My gripe is the lack of keys in game (but i feel this is an oversight becasue Anet have always said that anything in shop(gem store) can be found in game, now the amount of chests that drop x number of keys is way out of balance, but i think that is just it a balance issue? (Simple oversight).
My only other gripe is that the contents are usually crap (sorry anet) and not even worth opening, (why there are so many on the TP).
Same as other chest’s eg : completing a jumping puzzle = loot i cant use, or could at least be green rather than blue
Once i hit 50 or so i stopped getting chests and keys completely.
Thats called bad luck

Really? That is great, I had no idea.

I call it good luck because i got loads of em before that and have like 20 different types of tonics that imo are completely useless and no idea why i even keep em. The chests in their current state are worthless to me, they don’t really give anything worthwhile.
I think that they just need to put better loot in the chests. The transformation things are pointless, as well as xp stuff for killing mobs because the normal xp is so small anyhow. The most useful things I’ve gotten are the transmog things for gear (for which I’d be willing to spend gold/crystals/karma for that ability from an in-game NPC), and the crafting bonus (possibly, haven’t used this yet). Before they increased the stack size I was just tossing excess chests that I looted. What would get me interested in BL chests?
cosmetic items (for both armor and clothing slots)
dyes
in-game currency
large capacity bags
tradable gear
game keys (I kid, mostly)
i got like 25 keys maybe more, they arnt super easy to get but they arnt bad, although i might have got a few from exploration.
however if the keys are going to be so rare to get, you need to increase the reward and remove the soulbound nature of the items, honestly the items for the most part are junk and soulbound.
atm id say its worthless in game, kinda think of it as a light gimmick nothing more.
I have over 80 at the moment. Gonna see if I can collect a full stack.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
chests are bonus loot, they do not replace loot, so they are extras. If you dont have keys, just stack them in your bank until you do.

Agreed. The tonics are useless unless you’re in to role-playing, and I don’t even see role-players using them that much. The boosts are useless as well, we level up fast enough as it is.
If I am going to transitively pay real-world money to buy a key for a chest, there should be something more than the three pre-determined items we will get (two of which are useless, and the other of which is somewhat useable). Plus, there’s no “excitement” in opening them when you know you’re going to get a tonic, a boost and an item every time.
As for the keys issue, I’ve gotten a key from every chest I have opened. So I currently have five keys and no chests, but am sure the next chest will have another key.
