I’m not sure if they do this for other classes, but I’ve played exclusively a Thief since launch and Infiltrator’s Arrow/Shadowstep/etc like to say “Out of range” a lot.
It can be detrimental in the middle of a fight, so I think it would be a lot better if, when you shoot Infiltrator’s Arrow with your cursor past the maximum distance, the skill should still activate and it should still send you as close as the range of the skill would allow you to get to your cursor’s position.
This allows perfect 100% use of the range of the skills, and a lot less spamming the number key and tantalizingly slowly moving your mouse downward in the middle of a heated fight trying to get mobile when your class places EXTREME importance on mobility.
Excellent idea.

Would be nice if this also went for the Elementalists Teleport skills as well. I never both having it inmy bar because you have to take so much time ensuiring you have it “just within range” when there is no range indicator in this game.

This should go for all ground targeted abilities.

/agreed all ground targeted abilities…. max range in direction.
Sounds good. In that case we would need a little indication, like a coloration of ground
targeted skills when using the smart cast/auto cast option and the cursor is out of
maximum range of the skill.

I completely agree with this, when I am in downed state as a thief I often am spending an extra about 5 seconds trying to position this circle as close to the edge as possible without going out of range for my teleport downed ability.
I also support this, if you play a weapon set focused on ground targeted skills this could significantly increase your APM, normalizing it with other weapon skills that still fire regardless of “out of range”.
I had the same issue with my Mesmer’ Blink initially but I’ve gotten used to roughly the distance it will take me when used so I don’t often have the issue any more of getting the out of range message.
I also have my options set so the ability is used where I point my cursor on the screen rather than placing the green AOE field and then clicking to use it which wastes a lot of time. However that is a good way to get used to the distance. Instead its an easy quick adjustment when you are out of range to move your mouse and press the button again.
I don’t agree that they should be max range at all times because this would limit the ability quite significantly when wanting to blink to a specific spot. It would actually make it even less accurate.

Fay my problem isn’t that I can’t judge the distance on a flat surface my problem is the distance “changes” when not on a flat surface. Have you gone to a rolling hill area and used the same skill? It will tell you out of range even though it should or when your casting at something as running up a hill. I have always felt that distance isn’t like laying a string in a straight line across a flat desk but taking the same string and putting it on an arch or taking the same string and then putting it over a bunch of small arches.
I don’t want to have to be a savant mathmetician to have to figure out max distance for all different scenarios.
I think the idea of having a mark on the ground at max distance if you do any distance max skill would be great. it also would help out with targeted AoEs and other items as well. I had not even thought about those.

Yes I agree the measurement for distance should be horizontal only.
excellent idea!
