Bring back radial/true nearest targeting
Nearest targeting for me is anywhere in a 180 degree forward looking radius from me. I often find myself using Swoop, only to be jumped sideways, at a mob I didn’t even know was there, that isn’t even in combat, instead of at the mob I happened to be looking at.
I wish I could limit "nearest" to what’s on the screen in front of me.
So shines a good deed in a naughty world.

Meh, I really enjoy the way it works now. As a thief, it makes it really fun that I only have to drag my screen to point at my enemy and then shadowstep to them.
Im not opposed to them adding an option for it, I just think there are bigger problems that should be looked at first.

I don’t know what I don’t like about the targetting but something is off.
Nearest often doesn’t target the nearest. And auto attack without choosing a target often picks a moa when I’m already struggling. The difference can be life & death… or rather life and fees.

I have to disagree.
Targetting currently is broken beyond ridiculous. At least that’s how I experience it with my axe throwing ranger.
Quite often there is an enemy right in front of me/my character, and I select “target nearest enemy” and what gets targetted? Not the enemy in front of me, but the one behind that – which is about twice as far away from me.
(And usually not even aggroed.)
Same thing happens often if the enemy is somewhat at the side of me. Apparently “nearest enemy” means “randomly chose an enemy that doesn’t attack you”.
To be fair, these enemies are sometimes a bit below my position – so perhaps the improved targetting engine simply can’t take height difference into account?
Or does “nearest” mean “closest to my true level”?

I have pulled SO many moas into combat because of this. (And they’re surprisingly kitten for big chickens.) My main is a longbow ranger, and more often than not, my pet will run out, past the enemy slightly off from directly in front of me, and draw agro on both the enemy I meant to target, and the enemy twice as far away. There are other major issues in the game right now, but the targeting is getting to the point where it’s seriously detracting from the fun of the game.
I don’t have a problem with the current version existing, but I don’t want to use it, and it shouldn’t be called target nearest. There needs to be a separate key for this.

I see this all the time. Pressing Tab will skip right past a target that is in my face and instead it selects a target that’s nowhere near me, not even engaged in combat with me.
In the first Guild Wars, target nearest enemy meant that you targeted the enemy that was nearest to you. With GW2, targets the closest target-able object in an arrow straight line directly in front of you. In hectic combat situations, or any time that there are things like weapon racks around, this makes combat needlessly cumbersome and clunky. Maybe we could get an option for our nearest target selection, between GW1 style, and GW2 style, because I’m sure there are folks out there who enjoy both.
Agreed (love gw1 woot should’ve kept ALOT of things from that game, the style of economy first and foremost)
nearest-first was on BWE1.
and it was horrifying. melee was just impossible.
that’s why they made the change (and why ranged got nerfed to deal slightly less damage than melee)

Please elaborate – I don’t see why it whould be impossible? Targetting the enemy closest to me is what I’d always look for.

Perhaps it was impossible because he was repeatedly reselecting nearest. Otherwise, targeting would/should (assuming it wasn’t broken) remain on the target you already have until it’s dead/gone or manually changed.
Target nearest should target the nearest hostile in your field of view. It’s not that complicated, yet at this point in time it’s definitely not working—at least consistently—as it should.
Another question. Does anyone have an issue with targeting where your target will suddenly switch to a friendly mid-combat, without hitting any targeting hot keys? Every once in a while, I end up targeting my pet or a tank, while trying to take on hostiles.

enemies would always attack the melee guys, because you know, if you’re melee you’re closer than the ranged guy. this meant that the people doing melee couldn’t attack without being targeted, while the ranged players could sit back and camp while the boss nuked every melee around him, one by one.
What I really want is a system like Guild Wars 1 where tab targeted the NEXT enemy (enemy: that would be a hostile, not a weapon rack, or a moa, or a bunny) or C to target the closest enemy. Tab would take you through all of the enemy choices so if there were priority targets you could find them quickly, but C would always be the hostile creature nearest to you. It worked very well and we need it back again.
Personally I don’t want a targeting button to ever choose a neutral target. If I want to shoot the moa I’ll target it manually.
