Ok. Please forgive me if this has been done to death already. I don’t have time to trawl the search function because I’m at work and shouldnt be playing on the forum, so I won’t be offended if this is merged.
Straight up, I miss the missions from Guild Wars 1. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy the dungeons and it’s true that they’re kind of the same thing but there’s simply not enough of them to really round out a full game experience in my opinion.
In GW1 there was nothing better than getting home from work, getting together with my friends and slamming through a couple of story missions. We would get beers and all hang out in-game for like 3-4 hours having a blast doing the mission instances.
I just feel like this communal aspect is missing from the new game. I don’t dislike the personal story, but it really is not that fun to take your friends on because the personal story missions don’t have a great deal of scope and don’t make a lot of sense to other players. They’re also usually stupidly simple to clock, because they’ve been designed to be soloed. Also the reduced mapsize really makes you feel like you’re in a cage.
The other night I was playing with a friend who needed to do AC for the first time. Most players had already moved on so we couldn’t get a party of 5. We sat in the map for an hour trying to rustle up a group to no avail. In the end we gave up. My friend then asked me ‘is there anything else we can do?’ and the answer is more or less no. We went to WvW but our world was losing so badly that there were no other players there. We saw one other person the whole 1/2 hour we were there and obviously 2 people cant take a keep. We shot one pack Dolyak and called it a day…
There are no missions to play, once an area is cleared there’s no point you going through and doing it again. Sure you could get a little bit of loot but nothing to make you actually want to go back. The events are sterile by the third time you do them and there’s virtually nobody in the starting areas anymore because there’s no point in doing it. It makes for a very lonely MMO.
Anyway. Just food for thought. I’d be keen for the live teams to bring back the classic, bombastic, mission form. It wasn’t broken or boring so why do away with it?
Also challenge maps like JQ or a DOTA ripoff would be absolutely stellar. It would give you a reason to actually get together and have a good time with your friends, an element that I feel this game severely lacks.
No love for sPvP? It doesn’t sound like you and your friend tried that the other day.
On a less off-topic note, completely re-adding missions would be a LOT of work for ANet, and have a great deal of overlap with the story stuff covered in the last 2/3rds of our personal stories.
I would totally kill for a DoTA gametype in GW2, though.
gw1 missions offered nothing that made people redo them once they got masters as well
I see no reason why they can’t add in daily “quests” so to speak.
AFTER LEVEL 80.
The point of the game is to have all these different things to do. Some people like a daily quest type of setup. I am not one of these. I HATE dailies. However, I am not the only one playing. If implemented after level 80 as an optional activity, I see no reason not to add them. As long as anything given by them , can be gained via other means.
Yes we have dynamic events. Which are great. But also in a real world (or even a game world) people want a sense of purpose. I see no reason that this can’t be provided.
My idea of missions/quests.
Each Major City would have a job giver.
Each day, you could go to a city and find the respective job giver for that day in that city.
Lets say on Monday’s the leatherworker in divinities reach needs a new stock of material scraps. You would pick up the job from his apprentice, who could be anywhere in the city trying to recruit people to sell him the scraps he needs. This encourages exploration, within the city. Then he sends you on a small quest chain throughout the Krytan Zones, to collect the goods he needs. Since you are level 80 (not available till then) You have access to all those zones. Each week it would pick random NPC’s (say 3 in each Krytan Zone) that you would collect supplies from, then when done, deliver to the leatherworker in divinities reach. For your effort you receive a small reward of gold and a batch of materials for your own use as well as some exp and karma.
Each quest could only be completed say 3 times a day.
Every day of the week would be a different quest starter.
You can’t complete the same city more than 2 weeks in a row.
NPC’s would be unmarked on the map, hence actual exploring would be required.
The cash amount of the reward would be less than the teleport cost to reach all the npc’s.
This would fulfill all the game requirements for exploration and such, while still providing rewards for time and effort.
It would also make it very likely that people would pass DE’s while running around doing it, and in no way would it give you an advantage over someone who is farming Orr, or doing WvW, or any of the other billion things in game. Everything acquired, could be gotten elsewhere for a little time and effort, and it fulfills the need of those that need more structured content.
Missions were the worst part of GW1. The WORST.
No thanks.

Let’s not forget Zaishen missions, quests, and vanquish. Now I know vanquish probably isn’t possible (or is it?), but the others would certainly be applicable. Hear me out on this, I think it could really work.
Maybe an alternative to a Zaishen Mission would be, say, zaishen dungeon (explorable)? Because explorable mode has all these different paths the party can take, and the easiest path is usually taken for the most part, a zaishen “mission” could say “Complete [insert dungeon name] in Explorable Mode taking path A, B, or C.” However, they could even mix it up even more by saying “Complete [insert dungeon name] in Story Mode.” if they really wanted to (these Zaishen “Dungeons” would give rewards upon completion like in the first game).
Zaishen Quest could maybe be a world event in a certain zone that takes a series of dynamics to complete the whole thing. I really don’t know how this would work out but it’s just a thought. Possibly, a certain zone (ex. queensdale) could have an individual instance for a party (like in GW1 explorable area) where that party can travel to this instance together and complete these “quests”. The individual instance zones would be activated by an NPC near the respective exist to that zone (so to activate queensdale exp. area talk to the NPC in Divinity’s or anyNPCs in adjacent zones (to queensdale) – Kessex Hills for example. These NPCs would obviously be located near the exits to Queensdale).
Zaishen Vanquish could follow my formula for quests and instead of activating dynamics, all the enemies in that area would be open to kill. Obviously this then again requires the individual explorable areas.
I think this would work perfect if ANet really could incorporate their instances into GW2 because then us GW1 players could get a sense of nostalgia (which is always good) while actively playing in the GW2 environment.
PS: If missions aren’t preferred, like GOSU mentioned, just make these Zaishen events come back and it is simply a mere option to do or not to do. You get rewards and money for it so why not.

Yeah I was actually just going to bring up Zaishen. That was a great thing to do. I think for mine that + explorable area quests that change (like the quests from War in Kryta) are great ideas.
Also bringing back a version of Nicolas the Traveller would drum up favour for explorable areas.
I think a big issue is that there’s now not really anything special to hunt. I remember we used to go hunting elite skills through all the areas in GW1 and some were super hard to get to. There’s nothing like that now, so I think they do need to nut out a way to get people back into zones after they’ve maxed them.
For those who didn’t like the missions at all, would you care to qualify that a little?
ie. What was it that you didn’t like about the mission system?
@IPunchedyour family: lol love the name But yeah, I forgot about Nicolas, that would be a great idea as well, to bring population back into the lower-level areas.
I feel like ANet focused 110% of their attention into making a new game that would revolutionize MMOs, and that was a good move I respect that, but now that they have accomplished that feat, it’s time to bring back the traditions so it really does feel like GW*2* rather than a different Guild Wars. I think they got much of the formula nailed down, so replayability should be their top priority, and if not, second to the top or else this game will lose popularity FAST.
All sequels to games should make the player feel like they are playing a sequel, rather than a completely foreign game that just has a #2 after it’s original game, and I truly believe that is what GW2 is. It’s so different you can’t relate back to the first game (feature-wise).
