Buying gems by the number you want
this is in every real-money to in-game currency exchange. They force you to buy a certain number of gems, usually more than you need. That way they make more money

Well even though you can’t physically punch in I want X amount of gems you can still do that so Quick Mouse.7635 statement doesn’t hold true for Arena Net.
If I want 85 gems I simply put in a base number of gold say,
2 gold = 100 gems
so then I put in
1 gold 72 silver = 75 gems
I just keep changing the number till I get the number I want. ( that example is not 100% correct in math just an example )
Now as far as buying gems with real world money there is set amounts, this isn’t to get more money from the players ( at least in my opinion ) it is to simplify things. There is a lot less encoding involved when you you say you can buy
100 gems
400 gems
500 gems
1000 gems
1500 gems
2000 gems
than saying
well for 1 gem it is X amount and then getting your system to tally up the price.
ah yes, for gold→gems it would be nice if you could punch in the exact amount of gems you want. For the real money conversion, this will never change
