I made a norn for the first time yesterday, a female set to minimum height. When I began to play her, I was caught off guard – the camera hovers over her rather than being on level as it is with every other race.

As I continued to play, the camera positioning, for some reason, began to make me more motion sick than the old camera did before it was fixed. Probably because my mind expects the camera to be somewhere else entirely. I have a character of every race and Norn are the only ones I’ve noticed with this issue. It would be nice if the camera position scaled with the height of the character. Right now, I’m not going to be able to play her very much, and I’d really hate to have to make her taller.
I have a feeling this is going to make jumping puzzles nightmarish.

Pictures are my maximum height male Sylvari warrior, and my Norn guardian, to show the difference in camera placement.

Is anyone else having issue with this, or am I just crazy?

It’s probably a combo of race and height. My camera is much higher on my norn and charr than it is on my asura. So the camera is probably set for the race and as your norn is small it just feels strange, especially after playing a tall character.

I took a screen of my asura standing next to an NPC char and if you see there is a lot of footroom under the charr. If I were playing a charr the camera would be higher filling that negative space.

The higher camera height on minimum scaled norn female characters is the ONLY reason I can still bear playing Guild Wars 2, to be brutally honest! In an otherwise amazing, amazing game and MMO, the lack of a height adjustment on the camera’s center point (vertical offset/camera pivot) is severely hampering my willingness to expand out and enjoy other character races and their stories.

In GW2, the camera mostly lines up with the upper half of your characters back, making it extremely akward to sometimes tilt the camera upwards, without having it colliding with the ground and then zooming right into your characters back. It makes proper forwards observation and comfortable upwards observation challenging at best, in an already limited vertical FoV enviroment (on 16:9 monitors – even with the “bug fix”).

Ever noticed how the camera goes into “feet cam” mode when trying to look upwards, say on top of a keep wall? Ever noticed how hard it is to sometimes appreciate the scale, especially on the z-axis? Ever noticed how the camera seems to drift on the floor when you’re trying to get the ground/horizon/sky into one comfortable view? That’s the low camera pivot preventing you from doing so comfortably, in combination with the horrible centralization of your character when you zoom out (aka, “Diablo view”).

GW2 has 3 camera heights:

  • 1 x for the asura (which is very, very low … much too low)
  • 1 x for the human and sylvari characters (imho, also too low)
  • 1 x for the norn and charr races (the highest so far)

Now, you can take advantage of the norn/charr height if you choose the least bulky and shortest options in character customization, which works great for me. In your case, I’d probably suggest going somewhat taller, which should equalize it for you for a bit, in terms of the camera feel you’re used to.

Ideally, having the ability to adjust the camera height would be great and I really hope ArenaNet will consider this some day. GW2 is the only MMO I’m having these type of issues with and I can tell you, it really puts a dampener on my enjoyment of the game.

Whoever was involved with the camera mechanics should be forced to do the Troll’s End jumping puzzle 10 times in a row with tall char and norn characters daily until it is fixed.

I think the graphics in the game are great, but the camera mechanics near objects is one of the worst I’ve seen in a professionally produced game.

I used to have the same issue as Makovorn, I played a short norn just because the camera was higher up so you could see things better ( though actually you can’t see your own character very well ), though after a while I really wanted a human so I had to get used to the camera mode for that, but now I don’t really want to go back to using my norn because I will start to be bothered by the camera differences again.
Could we not just have some toggle to switch between camera modes for each race so I can then set the norn to use the human camera or other people can use the norn camera for humans ? or even a scaler for the camera height etc ( with the current settings for each race marked on the scale ? )
