Why call it a bank at all if it doesn’t perform the one and key feature that defines a bank?

Protection. You can store your gold, and your personal items in your bank but what happens if your account is compromised? The hacker can just go in your bank and take everything.

Usually when you access your bank account you need a pin. It would be nice if Anet could implement a pin system like the one found in runescape (most players first mmorpg). It worked, people would get hacked, get their account back and everything they left in their bank was still there and safe.

So why can’t we have a pin system for our banks? If not don’t call it a bank, just call it “storage”.

Have a better “PIN” for your whole account and this solves the problem altogether. If someone wasn’t good enough at creating and securely keeping one password, what makes you think this would be any different?

I actually like this idea. Make having your account compromised less traumatic and would reward those who did it less.

Having a better password doesn’t always work. Hackers have various abilities to get past such a thing.

Why are you even trying to make an against argument over a bank pin? Just another layer of optional extra precaution to protect your stuff?

Having a better account password, along with using the multiple extra layers of security ANet offers us does indeed make this effect redundant… but that’s not a bad thing.

In security, redundancy is not a negative. It’s a positive. Having a bank PIN is something I definitely support, as long as it is simple and fits the lore of the game. Perhaps a visual minigame lock (similar to smartphone unlock puzzle challenges) would be an enjoyable and optional addition to the bank.

I support the OP’s suggestion 100%. Good idea.

The other issue with this idea is the inevitable increase in workload for customer service, which is already stretched thin enough as it is. I can guarantee you that there will be a constant flow of “I forgot my pin, please reset it” requests if this were ever implemented.

You could put a $400 lock on that bike and it would still get stolen. Something you have to keep in mind is that phishing isn’t the only method hackers use to get a hold of your information. If you’ve got a keylogger on your computer, that PIN is going to do squat.

That is a horrible excuse not to implement a pin system. Your pin will be like your password, forgetting it maybe after you haven’t played in forever. I doubt it will stretch “workload thin” nor do you have actual proof that is what is happening.

THERE IS NO REASON NOT TO ADD AN OPTIONAL PIN.

Uh, yeah, have you seen the response time lately for compromised accounts as it already is? There’s been people waiting 72+ hours (in some cases over a week) for even an initial response, let alone action.

As someone that works in security, I can GUARANTEE you that this will create extra work. People have a hard enough time remembering passwords, adding more is not going to benefit anyone.

This isn’t even the primary problem with your idea, either. If the account is compromised there’s a very good chance that the PIN is as well. I work with two-factor authentication EXACTLY LIKE THIS in my line of work, and the cases where the password was broken but an additional PIN wasn’t are extremely rare.

It’s also redundant. They already allow you to add an authenticator to your account, your feature would just be wasted time.

Personally, I think their development time would be better spent making the actual game more secure from hacking, not making it so features inside the game play well with already-hacked accounts. If they can minimize the risk of being hacked, then these features they spent time developing become rather unnecessary, especially if they have good recovery capabilities in the event that someone does get hacked.

A system like Rift’s coin lock would be a far better implementation, which severely restricts what a player logging in from an unauthorized IP can do on your account. ANet has already taken this one step further with their authentication system by not even letting you log in if you’re logging in from an unauthorized IP. Add on a mobile authenticator, once those kinks have been worked out, and your account should be secure to the point that people will need access to your email, phone, and account information to get in.

That’s why you make it so a keypad pops up ig and you have to enter the PIN with your mouse, and the numbers move every time you try to access it.
I doubt this will happen in the first place, would be a huge workload for Anet.

Putting in barriers for legit players to enjoy the game is not an appropriate way to deal with crummy design.

When I read the title, I thought for sure this would be a suggestion that ANet give loans, pay interest on deposits, you know, like real banks. And maybe then they’d get way out of balance by trying to pursue higher yields, collapse, and we’d all be suffering for their bail-out. Well… I think that’s about as likely to come from ANet as a PIN.

No offense intended to the Original Poster, but I hate this idea. I have enough trouble remembering the unique pin I use for my normal account as I change it about every two weeks. Maybe that’s just my problem though, but I think changing your account pin often and using your protection software (antivirus, malware detection, etc…) is enough.

As someone else has said, this would add very little benefit, for a lot of effort.

Leaving aside the fact that most of us keep our best gear equipped, what are the ways someone gains access to someone else’s account? (I refuse to call it “hacking”, look up the jargon file)

The possibilities I can see are:
ANet screws up: This happens, your bank is the least of your worries.
Your Email gets compromised: Attacker requests a pin reset, ANet sees that its from your account’s email address and grants it.
You tell someone your account details: If you fell for a phisher in this day and age, you’re an idiot. If you use the same account name and password as on another site after ANet yelling about it as much as they have, that’s your fault.
You get a keylogger on your system: Again, in this day and age getting your computer compromised? Really?

The first two are highly unlikely. The third has happened a lot. I haven’t had to worry about the fourth in about 5 years (see sig).

If you want an actual bank, you have to build one. Gather money, play the TP with said money and pay out interests to people who deposit money with you. Furthermore, the owner of the bank would be responsible for all the money entrusted to him, and as such he is the one who has to do the following:
- properly protect your account, because “hacked” account are almost always the player’s fault
- design a proper pin system so people can get money from him

Or you could just use the bank the way it works in every other MMO…. as a storage locker.

I’m with Illiander. Don’t get hacked. That’s YOUR responsibility, although A.net is cool enough to help you out when you kitten up. I wouldn’t go as far as to recommend using Gentoo, your common sense should suffice by not going to particular websites based on goldselling, stealing software and female body parts. If you must, use a virtual machine for such things, you get one for free with Windows 7 Ultimate if you paid for it.

I’m not sure I’d go as far as recommending uning Gentoo to someone who isn’t technically minded. Though I would suggest Ubuntu or Fedora. I’ll skip the list of reasons why for now though, and just link the Linux thread.

There’s plenty of reasons for people who aren’t technically minded to avoid Linux for gaming at all costs. I’m quite technically minded, I work with computers on a daily basis for industrial applications. When customers want Linux they are out of luck. We don’t support that. I’ve used Linux in my spare time but it’s simply not worth the hassle. Very limited gains for far too much trouble.

ANet screws up: This happens, your bank is the least of your worries.

You forgot NCSoft screws up and lets someone into your NCSoft master account and they then reset your GW2 account and then log into your account and steal all your stuff.

This happened to a bunch of people (myself included) in GW1, NCSoft politely tells us to contact ANet as getting items back isn’t NCSoft’s problem, and ANet tells you they can’t help you and to use a better password for the hackers to reset next time.

Expecting good customer service from ANet is pretty useless, kind of like how they disabled the network verification tool after implementing the phone verification tool. . . That really helped all of us without smart phones it did. I can’t view my saved networks anymore.

ANet will improve the game a lot, but I don’t expect much improvement to their customer support. Seems their idea behind support is to ignore and laugh at your just hard enough so you get angry but not hard enough so that you leave (I’m for instance still waiting for an acknowledgment to my lost halloween item from ANet). Oddly, the forum moderators who delete your posts seem very on the ball.
