Its been discused many times. Capes are thing of history, lore-wise and there is cliping issue also.

This is the only reason im glad there is clipping issue. Capes are lame :|
I don’t accept that. Swords are in history and lore yet they are used. Also most other games manage the clipping issue so I don’t accept arena net cant do it

Charr dont like capes, they hinder 4 paw running…asuras calculated that capes add big % to fumble chance etc. So excepting it or not thats how things stand from lore point of view.
As for clipping, there are already some nasty clipping with some pieces so i can only imagine how bad capes clipping was. Oh yea btw, there was an idea to have capes durring developement but it was scraped for obvious reasons.
We can’t have capes, even small backpieces clip with everything, or, in case of things like quivers, float.
The game has no anti-clipping code, you would probably see your buttocks (first time ever using this word, but hey, profanity filter ) coming out of the back of the cloack, to not even speak of weapons

I would have loved to see guardians have the originally planned cape, mantle and scarf (especially the scarf) as their biography item instead of the current pauldrons and helm.
I believe the issue isn’t as much about clippping (as Kraixus says, other games manage it), but maybe more that if they use clothe simulation like in GW1 (which clipped a lot) I believe it would put some unnecessary pressure on the already poorly optimized engine, especially in wvw, and if they use keyframe animation (which hopefully wouldn’t clip if it’s well done) then it probably requires a lot of work for the animators (especially if you want it to look good), as well as probably some additionnal optimization because of this new layer of animation on each character. Creating new skins isn’t easy, you can see that in each update there wasn’t a full plethora of them, and none of them were armor (and none of them required a full animation work). Actually they may be working on it but it will take time, and I believe preparing the incoming ascended armors may be a higher priority. If they use new skins that is to say.
I’m not a commander, but I would like something like this to differentiate commanders on the battlefield. Whether it be a cape, a horse, a crown, or something else, I think this would be pretty cool.
Yeah it would sure fuel egos and make people spend 100g on commander tags, but you know, it would look sweet in WvW. Maybe only allow it in WvW

You have a source for this? Because it sounds like you’re making up ‘lore’, Mr. Spelling.
Pretty sure Charr wouldn’t like plush Quaggan backpacks, either. Trying to say clothing shouldn’t be in an MMO because the races wouldn’t naturally wear it is ridiculous, especially when we already have top hats, aviators, Gandalf’s hat, pirate outfits, weird dredge armor, etc.
