Wardens of Myth, Tarnished Coast
First of all, I really love this game so far. I can safely say I’ll be playing it for a long time to come.
I heard that GW2 might be getting player housing. This is wonderful, as it’s something that would really fit in well with the game and give players a place to return back to. A new ‘utility’ type spell that allows you to teleport back to your house from the field would be perfect. Inside your house you should be able to pick items up that you’ve purchased on the Trade Post.
Here’s something that would take housing to a new level – Carpentry.
In EQ2 (forgive me for referencing this, EQ2 was my first MMO and though I love GW2, EQ2 still has a special place in my heart) you could craft furniture and other items to place in your house. You could make a safety deposit box (think Bank) where you could leave items. Lighting, fireplaces, chairs, beds, weapon racks, carpet, rugs, wood paneling – the list went on – could all be made by a tradeskill called the Carpenter. You received discounts by purchasing items directly from someone’s house, instead of via the Trade Post. This encouraged players to visit other players homes.
Homes in EQ2 were like a mini game – people took great pride in their homes and the way they designed them with furniture. Carpenters were a viable money making tradeskill.
You could also earn special ‘house’ rewards via questing. Difficult quests in EQ2 rewarded you with unique weapons. Once you out-leveled the weapons, you could convert the weapon into an ornament for your house. Veteran players would have a large quantity of unique weapons decorating the walls of their homes – trophies to brag about.
You could also craft from within your home, which wasn’t very practical but a novelty nonetheless. Holiday events would also reward players with holiday theme items to place in your home, like a Christmas tree.
If GW2 does launch player housing, please consider accompanying the player housing with a new trade skill – the Carpenter. Your player base for this game is well suited to this kind of addition to the game. I expect a lot of ‘PvP’ type players to say this is not needed and that there are more important things to add, but the bulk of your playerbase are casual gamers who I believe would really get a lot out of a well designed player housing model.
TLDR: Please consider bringing in a Carpenter trade skill to accompany Player Housing when you release it.
