Clearing out inactive account character names
i agree with nir.
The players paid for the game and the right to create and play characters in it which also includes giving their characters unique names.
Ans since they paid for the game the names should stay theirs.
In real life, if you wouldn’t use your bike for a few days, why should someone else get the right to take it? Even if you don’t use a thing, as long as you’ve paid for it you have the right to not use it and forbid others to use it.
(in this case it’s also against the law for others to just take it because it’s assumed that you don’t want others to just take it)
That uncreative huh ? pretty sad. Last i checked Identity theft was a crime IRL and thats essentially what you would be doing with this but in a game so i say no.
i just want to meet this guy that like the same games i like and use the nick i use and create accounts always before me…
even here somewhere i had to add a surname to my toon because the name was taken… where are you and why are you always fast than me at getting account?

On most free to play publishers, they clear inactive names after a full month (31 days, no more, no less) of the character being deleted. I agree with deleting them after a suitable amount of time has passed.
TERA, although going free to play soon, had it so that your character name was available the instant you deleted it.

Don’t agree. If I want my character to be named something, and I get it first, I deserve to have it because I made it. Just because you want a name someone else has doesn’t give you the right to take it away from that person. People could be inactive for any number of reasons, and should come back to seeing their stuff taken because “someone else wanted it”

Also, this isn’t a subs-based game, so there is no reason to be logged in at every waking moment. Many players will be playing GW2 alongside their regular sub game and may not log in for months on end. Likewise, people who have to stop playing for a multitude of reasons (ill health, flooded out, financial reasons for not maintaining an internet subscription etc) should not be punished because somewhere out there, someone and their small circle of friends believe they are entitled to other peoples’ character names because they were late to the party.
Whether you like it or not, the other person thought of using that name first.
Although, how original that name is kind of begs the question.
I have to admit that I’ve thought of names that happened to be already taken .. but oh well … it just forced me to be more creative and original which I prefer anyhow.

Djorn Wolfson: Norn Guardian lvl 80

I don’t agree with inactive deletions that’s for sure. But if a character was deleted by the user, and the name is not available (only that account can create the name again) then Guild Wars 2 needs to re-think name availability.
I don’t like idea of loosing names due to inactivity.
But what is with the “slot in a server-population”?
How long do you count to the population of a server,
if you do not play? Forever?
If yes, will we once have Full-Servers with 10 only active players?
I would propose a server-deassignment (or free transfer, if you come back) after several month of inactivity (or counting only active players for the limit, but this may give trouble should a lot come back to play, e.g. for an event).
I don’t like this idea. Despite the fact I want the name of “Hayk” for myself (it was my name in multiple other MMOs but apparently it was taken here), I don’t want to penalize players for not playing for a while.

WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald

I’m sure I’ve read somewhere on here that deleted character names are made publicly available 24 hours after character deletion.

lyeru, you misunderstand the thread. they’re not talking about deleted characters, they’re talking about characters who haven’t logged in in a while.
Me personally, I totally disagree with the OP.
I paid to play the advance weekend, and I bought a couple of character slots right away in order to create the names I wanted. When they released the rest of the GW1 names, I bought even more slots to reserve my GW1 second account names.
I’m taking a break from GW2 because I don’t like it right at the moment. One day I may be interested in it again, and if I logged in to find my names gone that I paid money to keep? Yeah, that’d be it for me.
