So, there’s been talk for some time now that “Commander” is going to be improved somehow in the future…

I suggest, that with this improvement come two things.

1) “Ranked” Commanders.

By which I mean, changing how the icon represents itself based on a few factors.

Accents to the primary shape should be added… Bronze for Bronze Invader, Silver for Silver Invader, etc.

Secondarily, the color itself should be augmented. 0+ Achievement points, Blue (standard) icon. 5000+, Green. 10k+ would be Yellow, 15k+ would be Orange, and 20k would max it out at Red.

This allows WXP rank and Overall Achievement to be displayed and roughly “Rank” a commander.

2)

With this “Ranking” system, and having seen several blobs of 5+ commanders moving around together, I feel like the visible commanders on the map should be culled.

Ranking works like this. WXP rank > Achievement rank. Achievement rank would only become a factor when, for example, two “Silver Invader” Commanders are near eachother, whoever has more achievements would outrank the other.

Couple this with choosing the highest “Ranked” commander within a 5000 range radius, and having only them visible. This would eliminate clutter when multiple commanders are present in close proximity, allowing for one commander to follow.

  1. Well how about no on the achievement part? A massive majority of all achievement points are in PvE, not in WvW. Thus, AP has very little relation to how long you’ve been in WvW. As for the ranking, I’m not sure. From what I’ve done with commanders in WvW, a lot of them do stuff like leading people in building siege in towers, which doesn’t get any WXP to them unless they build it on their own, rather than just placing it.

Honestly, I don’t think that it’s possible to rank a commander in a fair manner. WXP doesn’t quite cut it as a measurement, considering that the best way to get it is to blob up, which doesn’t really make you any better of a commander. Achievement points only relate to doing stuff in the game, which doesn’t have to be WvW. For example, Jumping Puzzles yield massive amounts of achievement points, not to mention dailies.

Having the Commanders be rankable by some kind of voting system also wouldn’t work, because that just turns into a popularity contest.

I think you should be able to rate commanders and depending on their ratings from other players they get either, bronze, silver, gold or platinum icon.

I’d be satisfied with just an option to have different icons for a commander. Like an “event host” icon for community events. Or some sort of PVE icon for PVE commanders.

And maybe in WvW we could have different icons depending on the role that a commander is playing in the battle. Like for example, one commander could be leading the main assault, and switch on a unique tag for that. While another might be performing a different role, and have a different tag accordingly.

Wouldnt this make people walk around with commander tag EVERYWHERE? Like in LA etc. just to show of? Alot of people do that already

I think the single best improvement for commander tags would be the ability for them to set their colour

“Bring supply to red commander!”
“Golums move up to Green tag”
“Want to zerg? Follow pink!”

It would be SO much easier than the current system of using commander names (which you only get by hovering your mouse over their icons)
