So as I’m sure everyone is aware, the Commander and Squad system in Guild Wars 2 is… well… garbage. Currently all a Commander tag gives you is a glorified rally point, some fancy map markers, the ability to check people’s supply and access to special yellow chat.

Given the nature of WvW, there is some simple improvements that can be made. Here’s what I came up with:

Siege Bank
This would be an extension of your inventory and bank. Here Commanders can deposit and withdraw siege at any time. You can view it from your bank or open it from a panel in your inventory or as part of a Commander UI (discussed later). An nice addition to this would be 1 – 5 free slots of inventory space in the bank. Ideally this would be used for things like food pots, but are open for anything.

Guild/Public Tagging
This is probably the most needed addition to the system. Giving the Commander the ability to select if he/she wants their tag to be viewable publicly or just for their guild. Additionally, they may be able to select if other Commanders can see their tag. This would vastly improve grouping and co-ordination in WvW

Squad UI
Again, something that is totally missing from WvW. This UI would most likely display all the names, siege, professions, levels and guild tags of their squad. It would be brought up through the Commander UI. This would also allow Commanders to invite and kick people from their squad. As part of this system, players would have to accept the squad invite, but kicking someone would be one sided.

Auto-Supply Check
This would make a Commander’s life a thousand times easier. As part of the Commander UI, the total supply count of all players within a 350 range radius would be displayed. Hovering over this would bring up a list of all the player’s names and their supply, similar to the /supplyinfo command.

Commander UI
This is what ties everything together. The UI would appear when the Commander tags up, or could even be set as a hotkey window. From this UI, the Commander would have access to their Siege Bank and Commander Settings. Information such as Surrounding Player Count, Supply Count, Righteous Indignation Timers (face it, we all use the overlays anyway), Squad UI button and Current Tag Status (Public/Guild). In terms of the appearance and placement, it would want to be easy enough to read, without intruding on the interface. Ideally it would simply be a window the commander could drag and resize as required, but could also be placed under the events UI.

Chat Tag
Commander who’s publicly tagged, a Commander Icon would appear beside their name in chat. This is to ensure their messages stand-out above those who aren’t commanding,

Those are the things that I personally believe would improve the current Commander System. I’ve been Commanding for just under a year now and in my experience, found the system rather lacking. Whilst I like the idea of people being encouraged to only use the tag as a rally marker and actually become leaders, there also needs to be a lot more utility involved. There also needs to be a total rework of how it’s obtained, but that’s something for another day.
