Why? The odds of any lottery depends purely on the specific system and the details, such as how many numbers you have to pick and in what manner you pick them, not to mention whether the actual selection of the numbers is “truly” random or not.

For one, where would the winnings come from? Surely you cannot ask ANet to just whip up 100 Gold out of thin air for the sake of getting people into it?

For two, what kind of money are we talking? 10 Gold? 100 Gold? 1000 Gold? An honest-to-deities 1,000,000 Gold? Surely you cannot be suggesting that the pot goes up without any cap, until some lucky fellow wins it all? Because that would kitten up tons of stuff.

For three, we already have people complain about the game’s lottery-like elements, mainly the Black Lion Chests. Adding in something like this would just make it worse. And can you imagine what would happen in the winner was deemed “unfit”, such as being a complete rookie with 5 silver to his name on a level 10 character? Or if it was some TP baron who already had thousands of gold? Or if it was a member of a large sPvP/WvW guild?

This game includes a part in the personal story where your character becomes intoxicated via a game. A Norn personal story line includes you getting black out drunk, then trying to retrieve something while everyone reminds you of your drunken antics. Elements of drinking and become intoxicated for fun are all over the game.

The damage is already done. This suggestion is not a bad idea because children play the game, it’s a bad idea for plenty other reasons.

Mystic Forge and Black Lion Chests ALWAYS gives something, while a lottery don’t.

There is a difference between putting 4 pieces of trash in the mystic toilet to get another piece of trash and spending money to get a chance of increasing that money x10k+. Lotteries can be manipulated. But lotteries always give out that chunk of cash to satiate the thought of, “Maybe I will get lucky next time” when it really comes down to who spends more on it.

I use to play Runescape. They came out with the “Squeal of Fortune” essentially “Wheel of Fortune”. You could buy spins and the Super Rares had the odds of 1:250. I decided to test it with 300 spins which I bought. Never got a Super Rare. Nobody got a super rare until 3 months later when people started complaining because they realized the ploy Jagex pulled.

A month (exactly) after they assured that it is possible to get the Super Rare, someone finally got it. There were reports of kids spending $100+ for spins on their parent’s card afterwards.

Alot of turmoil came from that but I understand there are many other reasons. I just wanted to point out the most ethical reason.

Getting “something” is not the same as getting what you want. You can say “Maybe I will get lucky next time” and continue trying and essentially bleed yourself dry for nothing but exp boosters. RNG is essentially still a lottery and a gamble.

But as I said, there are already adult themes in this game.

+1 This is a wonderful idea! I suggest a steam-punk based machine located in the Black Citadel that generates random numbers one a week. All the players can gather to see it real time.

Mystic Forge is also gambling. Some people made literally a hundred thousand gold out of it while other lost everything.

Chance is another expression of gambling. You are putting in money, gold, or materials and hoping to get something of greater value. Most of the time, you will not. Gambling is determined by wagering your assets for an uncertain outcome. What the outcome is, doesn’t matter, it’s the fact that you don’t know. You could have just flushed four rares down to toilet for one rare that’s not even worth the price of the lowest one you threw in there or you just spent $50 dollars worth of gems only to get experience boosters.

You may get something, and you may be guaranteed something, but you’re not toileting your rares for a 20s rare, and you’re not buying gems on black lion keys to get experience boasters. You’re doing it because you want to win big.

Over reaction indeed, i don’t understand why some people wont like the idea of a lottery? Probably they thought the lottery would use real money; if the lottery were to use real money then I would also disagree on implementing one, but if the lottery were to use in-game gold to buy the tickets then what is the problem?

Actually… you can already make a lottery. You pay in 20c into the “lottery” and ask people for participating for each 10c and give them an up counting number. After a certain amount of people you have a certain amount of cash in the lottery. Then you take off 20c, use a random number generator to get a random number which determines the winner.

Now depending on how you want to do it you can:
give the winner the full prize minus your 20 copper.
give the first winner 50% of prize; the second 25% and the third 12.5% (by using the random generator 3 times) and you take in the rest (12.5%)

You can also use a random number generator to generate the numbers of people’s as well. However this will increase the loss rate of people and discourages.

The only problem is that you have to make people agree to sending you money (small amounts in copper always encourage people to say “ok, let’s try”.)

It’s fully possible to make a lottery. It lies in the communities hand.

You are right, they shouldn’t be exposed to any of that. Unfortunately, everything you’ve listed circulates throughout elementary and middle schools. By the time they are teens they would fully understand every cuss word and taboo subject.

Even though they know about them they also understand that there will be consequences (from their parents and possibly law) if they engaged such acts. Parents drive that fact into their heads to a degree.

Gambling, however is bit different from what you listed because it can turn into a bad addiction. You can say that it is like drinking alcohol but you really don’t see kids getting drunk off this game. I would rather have my kids try a beer than play games that would kill them financially because 99% (1% for the sake of error) of the time they will spit the beer out and say it tastes bad. With gambling, it is just another game and one that can set them up for failure. Games are fun and addicting. Alcohol isn’t fun.

That’s the real reason not to do it. I’m really tired of rambling and RNG in video games. It’s for the most part unrewarding and a really lazy way to milk money out of players.

These children that you are so worried about should not even be playing the game in the first place. If their parents think they are mature enough to handle the themes in a video game, then the responsibility falls on the parents, not the company. It is a parent’s job to monitor what their child does and if they are deceptive and cunning enough to do all of this behind their backs, it is not the responsibility of ANet to shape their games around an incredibly small percentage of extremists.
