Daily/Monthly Laurel system not alt friendly
Even though I am a major altaholic I have to disagree. I like that the daily and monthly are account wide. One of the things I disliked most about [the game I shall not name here] was that everything was character based and I had to repeat faction grinds and dailies on each of them. After doing the Netherdrake and Argent Crusade grind on my 7th character, I was just tired.
Sure, it would be faster to be able to get laurels and karma jugs on every one of my characters every day but then it would turn GW2 into a constant state of just trying to run dailies on every character instead of just playing the game and getting the daily once a day while I play the character I want to play today.
I saw the account wide achievements and dailies as a blessing and it was one of the reasons I wanted to play GW2 instead of [the other one]. I am not trying to argue with you, just offer a different viewpoint.

Well another thing to think about, for me I only get to play 3 days per week, even though I put in 24-30 hours per week into this game, and I detest PvP, that puts the Daily my only place for Laurels. This means for me it would be about 12 weeks just for 1 character for 1 item.
So at the very least it would help those people like me who cannot play every day to be able to play their alts and gear them up in a reasonable amount of time.
Oh trust me I understand that. I have already planned out my next 150 days of daily laurels. I shall have the wolf cub and second place kitty. As much as I loath PvP in all its forms, I have even considered forcing myself into the WvWvW and try to complete my first ever monthly. That extra 10 (I think is the number you get for the monthly) laurels would speed up the process a little.

A solution would be to make laurels a resource that depletes per character… so if you earn one laurel for the daily, each of your characters can spend one, including any future ones you make.
The way it works now is absurd.

1 neck = 30 laurels, 4 necks = 120 laurels.
Maximum obtained in a month 38-41. Thats 4 months before you can equip 4 characters. I would understand if you could do dailies once per character and maybe if they lower the price to say 10 laurels for a neck, to be inline with rings (10 pristine relics, 1 per day per toon).

As far as laurels are concerned, the amulets are already essentially in line with rings. Amulets currently cost 30 laurels while rings cost 35.
I agree that the system is highly alt-unfriendly, though. I have 3 eighties and cannot necessarily complete a daily on every single day. I’m looking at, assuming monthly completions, early to mid-April to have amulets for them – not counting infusions. By that time it’s very likely that I will have another max-level character, as I have an alt who’s in the high 50s.
I concur that it seems like the best solution utilizing mechanics already in place would be to add amulets obtainable via Pristine Fractal Relics. The only real problem with this would be that there are a number of players with stupidly high amounts of Pristine Relics that they can’t currently use, which further disadvantages any players who don’t already have ascended gear. I also can acknowledge that ANet seems to have wanted laurels to provide ascended gear not obtained through other methods. Nevertheless, it’s a highly problematic system currently.
I agree with the character bound aspects of making the daily available per character, however it would be extremely self defeating if we couldn’t transfer the laurels between characters like we do gold. They already did that with karma and it made it harder to get gear for alts they have a problem with the economy right now TP specifically the items to make exotics. So we really need a daily that’s character only and then we need the currencies that weren’t transferable before to become transferable so that altaholics can gear their alts.
I suggest this: Make Laurels account bound like karma Jars. I don’t want to play one single character every day just to be able to buy something with laurels. It is just not fair because some characters are faster killers, others are in great places to gather, etc

The main fault in the reasoning here is the expectation that Laurels is/will be the only way to acquire these Ascended items. They won’t, they’re just how these specific ones are currently acquirable to allow for a different play style to acquire them.
Also, as has been stated laurels will become available through other means, as such it’s perfectly reasonable.
I personally have no interest in doing dailies on each character. I usually have enough time each day to do them once in the first place, so I don’t want to be forced to do them on a specific character. I want to play whoever and however I like and be able to accomplish just like those that have all the time in the world.

Generally there are waaaaayyy too many soulbound items in the game. That number should be reduced significantly if you ask me.

What sense does that make, there is no logic in that. Whether you play 1 character or many characters, it is still a 1 to 1 effort/reward per character with my idea. You get 1 laurel per character per day, and like I said with my idea, Laurels would be character bound, so no sharing laurels between characters.
What about the cost of respecing ?
ANET are going to be constantly tweaking balance. At this point I’m expecting monthly balance changes. Changes that will break builds, so you have to respec. Which includes replacing your gear.
Lets take a 30 day month as an example. Lets assume you grab the monthly early in the month*. You’re still going to take 20 days to get yourself the amulet your new build works best with. Now you only have 10 days before the next balance change, which could break your new build.
- Which wasn’t possible in October, November or December.
This is also bad for balancing GW2, as the first 2/3 of a month won’t be providing ANET with accurate data for balancing until people have had a chance to buy the amulets their build uses. But ANET can’t think up solutions and get them through their approval process instantly, so the few days before the update aren’t likely to help either.
In short, if ANET are lucky they might have a full week of accurate balance data. If they want that week to coincide with a full WvW match, then the patch will have to come out in the middle of a WvW match.
That’s just on one character from a player who plays every day. If you have a single alt (say, because you don’t like doing the same thing constantly), you will not be able to keep up with balance changes. Miss 2 days a week and you will find that you can’t keep up on a single character in some months. Miss 3 days a week and forget about keeping up. Some people only get to play on weekends, meaning they miss 5 days a week.
I’m also assuming that the balance update comes on the same day each month. Something which has never been true.
Oh, and sometimes you change builds that are still viable because you are simply bored with them.
Also, as has been stated laurels will become available through other means, as such it’s perfectly reasonable.
The only means they have stated is through other achievements. Which each can only be acquired once, so two big downsides:
– Your alts take longer to equip than your first character.
– Once your stockpile runs out, you’ll have the respecing problems I described.

They already are. All my characters show the single Laurel I earned yesterday.
I wish they’d just put these things from dailies (except maybe mystic coins) somewhere else. I decided to take a break (the “let’s play some other games for now and come back to this game later” relaxed kind of break) after seeing more things depend on dailies this patch, because I don’t particularly enjoy logging in to do the chores every day.
ANet said they’re embracing the philosophy that players should be allowed to play the game the way they want. If they were really doing that, they’d make things that get progress from any kind of playing grant laurels and jugs. The only thing that does that as far as I know are levels (though I guess they could also make more infinite rank achievements and make them give laurels and stuff). Guild Wars could also use something like the rested state thing from the game that must not be named, that accumulates over time and increases experience gained.
I disagree. I like them being account bound. I want to save laurels and karma and then use them when I make up my mind where I want to use them.
Additionally, some things are put into game with the intention of occupying us for the long term.

I would like to see the monthly remain account wide but the daily change to character only, but leave the laurels account wide as well that way altaholics can do the daily more than once a day on alts to acquire a few more laurels. I would also like to see the fractal part of the monthly removed. Laurels are a way for people who don’t like or want to do instances to obtain gear so please make them solo friendly. I started playing again specifically for the laurel system thinking I’d finally be able to upgrade my character without having to do dungeons even if it takes quite a while, but I find I log in to do my daily on my 1 character and then I log out. If I was able to do the daily on other characters I’d probably play a lot more.
I like it that they are account wide. My main can complete the difficult ones while my alt gains experience from them.
We just need to convence Anet to let use earn more Laurels through adding more attachments (Ex. weekly, monthly champion and Meta event).

Madness! Are you saying you can get items for doing fractals by doing fractals? Just like with Rings? Are you then going on to say that purchasing them with Laurels is just a way for people who don’t want to bother with fractals to get ascended gear, all be it a longer way? That’s amazing!
Now maybe people can get on with their lives and stop complaining so much. Personally I think anyone who is spending their laurels on anything other than teir 6 mat bags is nuts, anyway.

That just means you need a trade in system like with Rings so you can get the amulet you actually want. It doesn’t detract from the fact that it is possible to get an ascended amulet without spending a month doing dailies.

ascended items are supposed to be high end stuff – just set yourself of a long term goal and it’ll make the game less boring, if anet just gave you everything, no one would be unique and the whole game would be boring

I’m an altaholic and I disagree with this message.
I have a stable of characters, nine to be exact with two (count ‘em, TWO!) Rangers. By doing this, I’ve agreed to forgo any kind of rapid gearing and advancement of any one of my characters because I’ve agreed to split my time and resources between all of them. That means I split my play time, my gold (yeah right, “gold” with 9 toons my wealth is measured in silver), my karma and my laurels.
For people who devote themselves to a single character, they should be rewarded for that devotion by being able to deck out their beloved toon that much faster than me. THAT’S fair. That’s how it should be.
I’ve made a choice to follow the slow road for character development. Anyone who’s made a similar choice should just accept it and be content with all their precious works-in-progress, populating their character selection screen. That’s something the dedicated single-tooners will never have, nor understand.
No. Keep dailies account wide.
If they make dailies per character I can already hear the next evolution to this argument….
- Person A has 1 toon so they get 1 daily per day.
- Person B has 5 toons so they get 5 dailies per day.
- Person A now wants 5 dailies on one toon per day.
Just no.

ummm…. I have a much much much easier solution. Remove any and all character related bindings. Everything should have been account wide from the beginning. This way you can simply use your favorite item’s on which ever character you wish to play that day. Simple and done…
For the Triforge, that’s a great amulet. Min/Maxing is over rated and short sighted. There’s nothing wrong with a balanced build.
Achievements are account wide, and so dailies too should remain account-wide.
Personally I wish Anet would just remove Laurels; clearly they’re very distressing for some people.

Every time I come on these forums I see lazy people crying that they want everything so easy.
I’m sorry, but if you want ascended amulet on every single one of your characters then you can’t expect them all instandly, shall we all moan “OMG NERf LEGENDARY WEAPONS BECAUSE I DON’T WANT TO PAY ANOTHER 1K+ ON MY SECOND CHARACTER”… No. If you have more then one character then buy it for the most played character first, it’s not like all your other charactes are going to get one shot or seriously underpowered because they have to wait another month to get their amulet. Why do people always have to have everything handed to them on a plate.
Anyway, if they was to add this idea so they are all character bound i’d imagine that they would also increase the price of the items to make them more harder to get, as ascended items are suppose to harder to get then exotics. If they made them character bound they wouldn’t want people to get all their ascended gear within one month of the feature being released so that people start moaning it’s pointless now.

Ugh, no. The current system is alt-friendly. As it is, I can play on any of my characters, and still work toward the daily and monthly achievement.
I want to amass a decent amount of laurels so that I can eventually get a decent reward — it’s useless to spread out my time across multiple characters who each only have a few laurels each. If laurels were character-bound and not account bound, I would have to play only on my main to build up a significant amount of laurels. Playing my alts would almost be a waste of time, at least in that aspect.
Laurels are designed as a generalized reward system that can be achieved using a variety of play methods. They don’t necessarily make you grind a single aspect of the game into oblivion, or haunt a single zone or dungeon until you’re completely sick of it. They are incentives for the player, not a method of advancement for any single character. If I had to play a single character just to get laurels for them, that would be extremely unfriendly to alts.

Nobody in this thread is demanding immediate ascended amulets. The next time you create a straw man argument, at least try to make it plausible.
The point that the OP and others make is that up until now, BiS gear is only time-gated on a per-character basis – Fractal dailies are character-bound, rather than account-bound, etc. An alt-friendly system for ascended amulets wouldn’t necessarily be any faster – it would simply allow you to put in twice the effort and, at the end of a month, have two amulets.

That’s an astoundingly uninformed example. When FotM first came out, the only way to acquire ascended rings was a (low probability) RNG gamble upon daily completion. The complaints were derived from the fact that the ascended rings essentially allowed progress to higher-tier Fractals, but being attached to RNG meant that progress was being allowed/blocked on the basis of pure luck – and a chance at that RNG roll itself was time-gated.
And it is a valid point that Pristine Fractal Relics build up uselessly. Unlike both Laurels and Dungeon Tokens, Pristine Relics have no exchange items with any repeat value (in the case of dungeons: potions, tonics, runes, sigils; in the case of Laurels: gear boxes, dyes, crafting bags, etc).

You get no laurels for WvW monthly. OR DO YOU? Colin 100% told ME (direct reply with quote) they you get no laurels for PvP stuff (he might have said daily but it was implied that it was about all pvp activity).

As far as I know, you do not get laurels for the sPvP, they have their own reward system. But there will be a laurel reward for the regular monthly. And up until the new monthly for February, there was always a required WvWvW kill count needed for the regular monthly achievement.
I was so doing the Happy Dance when i logged in last Friday and saw the requirements for the new monthly. There is NO WvWvW requirement. I will have to run some dungeons but I can swing that.
My first monthly achievement completion will be this month. Many thanks ArenaNet!!
