Do a name clense at 1-year Anniversary
Okay so I get called away for some reason on business or family matter and I come back and my name is gone. I’m sure all those people that are away from game for various reasons during that time frame or longer will be pleased. Toss in all the people that miss the mail because it went into their spam box and even more people that don’t do it because they thought it was a phishing email and get the party started.
They’ve done plenty of name cleanses for GW1 → GW2 name preservation, so this is just like saying “I want your character’s name. I want it bad. Give it to me. Now. Arenanet, I deserve the name more than this person, who actually got it at the first come, first server. Give it to me, Arenanet. Now.”
In other words, “Let’s displease anyone who has a name they like and who for whatever reason plays intermittently, to satisfy a few players who are kittenhurt because they can’t have a name they want — when there is no guarantee that the name they want would become available.”
Worst. Idea. Of. The. Month.

I dunno, that 10 extra trait points idea was pretty terrible.
It’s not a good idea. There’s no real reason to do this. I can’t remember an MMORPG ever doing this in the past.
I’ve honestly never liked things like this. You’re basically tossing everyone who has been unable to play for long periods of time into the same box, and then punishing them all regardless of their reason.
And for what benefit? The ability for people to be even less creative with their names then they already have to be?

Inb4 he says League of Legends does it, although that’s a F2P game where people have multiple accounts with which they ignore. Also, there’s a set of restrictions for the name redact, which was lower than level 5 (~under level 15 in GW2 if you convert both skill/time/effort) and hadn’t played logged in a few months.
Well, we could just cleanse the names and all the ones that are cleansed could be thrown into RNG boxes in the store. I’m hoping to get this one guys name “Buttrice” that I seen.
If they were going to do something like this then it should be at least 90 days and emails should be sent to accounts as warnings.
It’ll never happen. The buy once play whenever aspect of the game will be damaged if they purged character names or just simply mark them as available so others can steal them. Greatest way to insure someone returning not to stay is by forcing them to rename their character.
ANet want people to return and play. There is a chance that people who play will buy gems with cash. Pretty much a 100% chance that people who don’t play will not buy gems with cash.
RIP City of Heroes

Agree!
But if you want to see the last time your guildies were active, you can look at the Leaderboards here:
https://leaderboards.guildwars2.com/en/na/achievements
Login to the Leaderboards and set it for Guild. Hover your mouse over the achievements column and it will show the last date they earned a point. (but careful, this does not account for people that may login just to /dance in Lion’s Arch or w/e)
WTS the one word name ‘Cookie’
I don’t think releasing names from infrequently use accounts will ever happen.
But… how about releasing names from accounts which have been banned, case thoroughly reviewed with no possibility of being reinstated?

If they were going to release names, they wouldn’t give you a 30 day warning that you must login. They would give you a 3 month warning that if you haven’t logged in within the last year, your name will be lost.
They’ve actually released names in the past (not counting GW1 to GW2 reservations). Back at the start of GW1, names could be reserved by participating in the pre-release. After release, all unclaimed names were eventually lost, but these people didn’t buy the game, so no one really lost anything.
Afaik, they have never done a name cleanse in Guild Wars 1 and I doubt they would in this game. They assume people are going to come and go. Why annoy someone who they hope will come back by taking their name(s) away?

They did do the freeing up of GW1 names that were “reserved” for a long time. That’s the closest they’ve came.
Terrible idea. gtfo
Just delete the trial accounts please, just do it. I want to use my name. Cant remember email/pw and support doesnt give a kitten . I dont get why do they keep them for more than 6 months
Terrible idea. If anyone touches any of my characters in any way, I quit…
Wasn’t one of the cool selling points of GW2 its lack of pressure to play all of the time ? Weren’t we supposed to be able to go away and come back to the game without a problem ?
I played TERA for the 6 weeks free at the start then decided i didnt want to carry on with the monthly subscription. Then when it went free i decided to have another look at the game. Because my account had been inactive for a while they gave my cool name to someone else who was active. I logged out and deleted the game.
So no giving your name away because you havent logged in for whatever reason is the worst idea ever.
Yes identity theft is a great idea…..
….Just wow….
