Its become clear that WvW is often a numbers game. My server is extremely dedicated to WvW and has some amazing commanders. The trouble is our numbers are often fewer than the opposition. Although the dedicated players are on all the time, fighting tooth and nail with smart tactics, the opposition often garners points simply by the number of players they have. “Outmanned” as it stands now is little more than a badge letting you know you’re screwed. The bonuses don’t help with combat at all.

In addition to this problem there have been a lot of posts about match-up imbalance where one server dominates for a few days and pulls so far ahead in the point count that it becomes pointless to play because catching up is impossible.

My idea is to work into the game a kind of “Turn-the-tide” quest line that would become available to start for the bottom server of the three, or once they have acquired enough “Outmanned” buffs (make them like badges so you can hold onto them for the week).
I’m not sure how the dynamic event would start. Maybe this “Turn-the-tide” quest line could be “purchased” with enough Outmanned badges? Or if you dropped below a certain number of over all points in relation to the other servers. Regardless, the quest would give the losing or outmanned sever a series of tasks to accomplish, similar to the “Ogre” or “Dredge” tasks, but much more complicated and time consuming. Like collect a series of items, run them to another location, summon some creature, etc. The result would be that one or a series of Dragons would be summoned and start attacking the keeps and castles held by the other servers. These dragons would be very strong and hard to kill. Zergs could form around them. Think of them like big siege with AI. And they would remain on the WVW map until killed or until a series of towers / keeps were captured by the team who summoned them. Not sure on duration.

For the outmanned or badly losing server, it would give them something to hope and fight for. For the winning server it would be very fun too, because they’d suddenly have big things to kill and a chance to get good loot and XP from the dragons. It would recreate that kind of “Hail Mary” Lord of the Rings plot line in so many fantasy narratives where an all-powerful oppressor is overthrown by the underdog because of a magic ring or small band of dedicated heroes.

The key would be to set a proper cool down on the amount of times the “Turn-the-Tide” quest line could be activated. And also to make the quest line difficult enough / the Karma cost high enough that it couldn’t just be activated at the drop of a hat but would require a series of dedicated players working for a few days to make it happen. And to make the dragons tough enough to actually make a difference. Also, you’d have to figure out a way to avoid servers exploiting the dragons when they weren’t truly outmanned or overwhelmed. And to make sure the dragons weren’t SO powerful that a good server couldn’t defeat them and still hold onto map control. And also to make the dragons a relatively rare occurrence in WvW. Something that occurred at moments of extreme imbalance or steady outmanned situations.

Plus, a huge undead dragon attacking SM would just be so epic and something you could use to recruit players from your server with.

Thoughts?

I think it’s more important that good WvW servers do well and progress up the ladder while bad WvW servers are allowed to sink. The more you help a losing team the less accurate the WvW rankings will be.

The thing that is missing in wvw is making a temporal “cooperation contract” with an other server to that if 1 of the 3 worlds is dominating way to much (holding a whole map alone), that the 2 outmanned sides can cooperate together temporarely, so that that world with that one side made a contract with will become temporarly allies, until all 3 sides have again like 33% on owned spots.

That way can become 2 sides with too less people together stronger and can acutally fight back.

if you have this situation:

Side A 250 People
Side B: 150 People
Side C: 100 People

Than its normal the best choice to temporarly cooperate as Side B with C to fight back A together, rathenr than making it some stupid All vs. All, where B and C will lose only over time more, if B and C have no way to tactically cooperate with each other, without hurting each other ….

Thats the current big problem of WvW balancing and also esecially alot of other smaller problems about WvW need to be finally fixed and balanced

  • 1. AoE Damage needs nerfs for WvW
  • 2. Siege Weapons/ Golems need buffs
  • 3. Characters in Towers and the likes need protection against AoE Skills and need better range with their skills and Siege weapons so that it becomes better to defend them
  • 4. Orbs of Might and Magic need to get reimplemented with some kind of helpful buffs that are worth it to fight for them
  • 5. Outmanned Boons need to be redesigned, the current stuff is a kitten bad useless joke, which help nobody … please karma, MF and experience boosts? are you serious Anet
  • 6. Siege Weapons need to become moveable, they all have mostly cycles, but they can’t me slowly moved out of damage zones (faster, if more people push/pull=??? wtf
  • 7. Remove every kind of money making and gear getting loot from WvW and remove by that allso this god **** annoying repair costs from WvW that have nothing to search in a game mode like WvW, where you basically can die alot in short time
The only rewards players should get in WvW are honour tags and nothing else besides exp.
  • 8. increase the amount of monsters on the map and make them more a part of some kind of tactical advantage, when players make certain questlines in WvW to become them as allies.. more than just some useless mini groups of npcs, which get killed in seconds. These npcs should be much more powerful, so that they are a dangerous threat and can actually help very good to take over places or to defend places, when those npcs patrol on the streets.

ect ect.

WvW has so many small points to work on, but if they would get changed finally, would massively improve the whole fun aspect of WvW alot and balance WvW more, so that zerging should become harder and not something, where you can just basically run blindly with, if the zerg is just massive enough to kill away everythign that stands in their way and gets not fast away enough or gets surprise steamrolled by them out of culling due to the game not being able to show you the zerg, before you already lie dead on the ground.

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

A friend and I had a similar idea, although not quite as dramatic, that should be applied on a borderlands basis.
Each enemy server on your borderland should not be able to host an army larger than yours. Indeed, each enemy army should only be half the size of the host’s.
My friend went the other way, suggesting that they should be able to host an army the same size as yours, +10% or so.
Either way is better than the current arrangement.
That way, even if you’re outnumbered in EB, at least you have a chance of retaining a grip on your borderlands.

It also stops nightcapping of your borderlands, as if you’re in bed and not fielding a force on your borderlands, the enemy can’t either.
