An idea for a (new to me) kind of effect popped into my head today. This may be something that has been/is being done already in this or another game, but if so, I haven’t heard of it. I’m just floating the idea here:

(Silly Inspiration Story: A random mosquito attacked me in Sparkfly Fen while I was trying to look at my map. When I killed it, it dropped a venom sac, and I thought, pshh, mosquito venom?! But then I thought of the anesthetic that mosquitoes use to safely land on hosts, feed, and escape, and I wondered how that kind of capability might translate into a game mechanic.)

So, the idea is an effect that briefly freezes an enemy’s health, as it is displayed to that enemy. That is, the enemy’s actual health would not be affected, but the enemy’s own view of their health would not show change, up or down, for a short duration. Perhaps the color of the health bar could change to indicate to the player that this effect is applied.

Basically, it could provide a window for attackers during which to try to maximize the impact of surprise when bursting. I’m thinking that because players to whom this effect was applied would probably try to heal/defend in response to that likelihood of burst, it would not have to be a terribly powerful ability in most contexts, but where cooldowns are already burnt or defending players are distracted, it could provide an interesting kind of edge.

Or maybe this is a terrible idea. Thoughts?

Edit: Oh, and I’m sure the good folks at ANet can figure out the best application for this kind of thing (cough mesmer ability! *cough)

It sounds confusing, although I got what you are saying.

To be honest a lot of RPG do this system like Final Fantasy. Where it works great in those type of games, not so great in MMO’s

Why it is confusing?

Well I am tired to begin with, Secondly I understand where your going with it and it is a cool feature in many RPG games. Although this is a MMO, which means the world is ongoing and not centered around a set character as the hero.

So what happens when the world freezes I mean Monsters stop attacking you, this is the removal of the Immersible and Progressing world of MMO’s. To implement this idea would essentially start to turn it form MMO to Turn Based RPG.

Uh, no, absolutely not. You can still be attacked and take damage, you just won’t be able to tell how much you’ve taken for a second or two. When I said that the player’s health wouldn’t be affected, I only meant by this skill, itself. They would still take damage.

Well thank you for the clarification, but I still have to say no I don’t agree or even like this Idea for any MMO let alone GW2.

If you cared to say more, I’m still not sure I understand why this isn’t a good fit for MMOs. Not disagreeing, I just think that in light of that clarification, your point about immersion may not apply any more(?)
