Engineer grenades - auto attack #1 please!
Control+right click makes any skill auto attack. You cal also set it up for quick casting for skills to put the activated skill where your mouse is.

CTRL right click doesn’t work for grenades. That’s my point. =)
and I know about fast cast, but that doesn’t help with the having to spam #1 on stationary fights
I know the semi-work arounds. I’m just saying I wish it could autoattack on land the way it does under water.
Right now if you try turning on autoattack on grenade #1 attack, it puts this little “locked” icon up meaning you can’t autoattack with it.
You’d probably have to play a grenadier for 10-20 levels, or in pvp for a while to know how frustrating it can be. I love grenades, but that part is really annoying.

Currently #1 grenade can not be set to auto-attack, as the OP stated. There is no logical reason a Rifle or a Pistol can auto-attack a target but a Grenade can not.
If the intent is grenades are a non-targetting attack in the real world, I can counter that so is the shot of a blunderbuss and any “rapid firing” musket/pistol.
If I don’t want a grenade to attack my target I could simply use ground targetting, so again the logic behind not allowing auto-attack doesn’t fit. I am guessing it is because the Grenade has no second or 3rd attack to cycle through.
smack..Wut?…smack…smack…
I think it’s more a coding thing. Grenades are coded for ground target, and all auto attack weapons are targetted attack. I bet in the other professions you can’t set any ground target attacks to auto attack.
They didn’t design it to smart switch between the two types of targetting.
For example, here’s how I think it should work.
Auto attack off – default ground targetting
Auto attack on – selected target targetting
That way you can control whether you’re in a mode of attacking a target with grenades, or throwing them at a ground target.
You’ll get the different if you take a grenadier engineer under water. Under water, grenades work as a selected target style, since you can’t target the ground in water the same way.
-edit also, they could make it work so even if you have autoattack #1 turned on for selected target attack, you could just not target anybody and it switches to ground target style.
Much like Ctrl+Right click sets auto-attack for a single skill in the bar, auto-target should be set with Alt+Right click, but this time for all skills, per skill separately.
That way, you could do things like ignoring Ground-target for a skill setting the first grenade skill to auto-target an enemy, or make it so the first Flamethrower skill does not auto-target, while keeping 2,3 and 5 auto-targeting.

You are responding to a topic that you dont understand.
Engineer grenades are an AoE attack. You cannot auto-cast AoE attacks in GW2.
What there needs to be is a auto target function for AoE attacks. Alt+Right-click should make it so that when you cast that particular AoE it always drops the green target circle directly on the enemy.
Its not a coding issue, other MMOs already have this small function.
Also, underwater grenades already do this. They are an AoE, but do not require you to place the marker (because of the 3D environment). The grenades all just fly towards the target.

I’m glad someone else understands lol. It’s probably an engineer only issue, and just with grenades.
I got really excited when they patched (I think around 10/1/12) where the skill bar remembers auto attack settings when switching between bundles/kits. Before then, EVERY single time I switched between my rifle/elixirgun/flamethrower, the autoattack I set for #1 was lost. It was very frustrating. I’m glad they fixed that at least.
But like I started to say, I got really excited that they’d fixed this grenade auto attack issue at the same time, but they didn’t. =(
I like your idea though of making it so if you have someone targetted, it will automatically place the aoe circle directly on them. It’s not really overpowering or anything, because in many fights the target is on the move, and you’d throw grenades behind the target this way. However it will sure help when doing dungeons/bosses/etc… that stand still for the most part. Imagine you rangers out there if you had to press 1 every single time to shoot your bow, or you warriors if you had to press 1 every single time to swing your axe. Dunno why grenadiers should get the short end of the stick on this. lol
