I know this has been brought up since Beta, but I’m day dreaming at work and wanted to throw out my ideas on Fishing and how it could fit into the game.
How to implement fishing (Couple options)
1 – Add recipes to existing crafting discipline. Huntsman makes fishing poles, cooking adds fish recipes, Jewelcrafting stays the same just had additional ways to get underwater gems, Artificer has additional potions to increase fishing proficiency.
2 – Create a new crafting discipline where you skill up by catching fish, making fishing poles, potions, etc.. All recipes that create fishing poles and different lures would be in the “fishing” discipline. Food would fall under cooking.
- Fishing poles would use wooden dowels to make the rod, and ingot to make the fishing reel
- Lures would use gems and ingots. The lures or potion would be a nourishment that would increase the chance at catching rare fish (i.e. Increase by 10% for 30 min).
- Fishing food consumable can be made from all the fish. It could give a bonus to gathering (+10% to get extra gathering material)
How to Catch Fish Fishing Spots
1 – Every map has some form of water on it, even some cities have access to some sort of water. Fishing nodes would pop up like other gathering nodes. You would cast and guarantee catch something (fish, pearl, coral, seaweed, etc.).
2 – Open world fishing where you can catch fish wherever there is water.
Hero would have to upgrade fishing poles like higher level gathering item.

The pane would have to be updated to add another harvesting tool spot for fishing poles
Gem Store upgrades
Since Anet loves the gstore and wants to keep bringing in money, they could add fishing outfits, possibly a chair that you can sit in and fish (if they made fishing where you can fish where ever, not node method).
My personal dream would have fishing be its own crafting discipline where the emphasis would be catching fish and making lures to level up. Fishing would be open world based, not node based.
