GW2 Controller
This controller would have to have an insane amount of buttons. You have 10 skills and as an engineer I have 4 toolbelt skills. That’s 14 buttons minimum. Oh wait, weapon swap is 15. Targetting would be 16. Interact/Pickup loot/stomp is 17. And would you need 2 Dpads/joysticks to look and move around?
I think ground targeting would be a problem too.

I considered setting up a gamepad initially, but there’s just too many commands and intricacies for it to be fully functional. I mean, your battle skills alone require ten buttons. And that’s not including clicking on targets, managing inventory, participating in chat, camera manipulation, dodging, jumping, etc.
I can’t imagine it using it for any length of time, without constantly having to go back to my keyboard/mouse all the time.
I think ground targeting would be a problem.
This is the only problem with using a controller
but……..
From what I’ve seen online videos GW2 with a controller is a ton of fun. Think people are using Xpadder and it works well. The biggest issue however is that you can’t ground target very well at all so any weapon/kit set that has it makes the controller inferior. Then again from what I’ve seen of the videos their using the second joystick (mouse) and just placing it right where the head is and its working ok.
I would love to see a GW2 contoller with enough keys and resonably placed for WvW/PvP.
Just realized that if your a warrior or anyone that have a bunch of buffs that software like Xpadder would might let you que them up like a macro so only one button would be needed instead of 3-4.
+1 for this
Davidah (Guardian) Goloith (Engineer)
Achuni (Mesmer) Doreanora (Thief)
What would be some good controllers for playing Guild Wars 2 on? Any suggestions?
I would say use the 360 controller and as far as the amount of abilities goes. Well I’ve seen a few games were if you hold down one of the buttons it changes ‘pallets’ to give access to other powers.
As for ground targeting that maybe a problem, but if Anet made a controller interface they could just make the ground target drop at the middle of the screen or something.
I’ve been using a controller since the game released without any real issues. Obviously you can’t type and going through menus just isn’t practical on a controller, so I switch to my mouse and keyboard for that.
I play with a PS3 controller, which functions essentially the same as an xbox 360 controller. I use the left trigger as my modifer key and this gives me 30 possible ‘buttons’, which is more than enough for combat with any class. The main drawback is targeting ground targeted skills, which wont be as easy or as precise to do but i place the cursor at the top of my characters head and use it as a guide.
Yes PLEASE!!!! I think I’d be so much happier with a controller. It’s just map chat that becomes the issues.
Anyway, wasn’t the rumor that Anet was/is trying to port this to consoles anyway? Especially if next gen’s are X86 based, I can see this happening in the future.
Combat mode (look it up on youtube) would be perfect for a gamepad. AoE ground target attacks will just be cast in the center of the screen. On the xbox gamepad, we could do this with combat mode:
-left stick = movement
-right stick = target reticule movement
-left stick + left trigger = dodge in stick direction
-right trigger = weapon skill 1. It would be cool if we can make it so holding down right trigger will continuously attack and stop attack when we let go.
-x, y, b = weapon skills 2 3, 4
-a = healing
-left shoulder + x,y,b,a = utilities
-right shoulder + x,y,ba = class specific
-left shoulder + right shoulder = elite
The problem is this probably only works well for melee type characters. I can’t imagine trying to create dodge clones on my mesmer for multiple enemies using this configuration.

I use a “Logitech Rumble Gamepad F510” and a keyboard/Mouse.
Areananet just needs to add a way to lock and unlock the mouse above the players head.
So I can play the game like a TPS.

If you mean have the cursor stay in the centre of the screen and allow you to turn the camera as if you were holding down the right mouse button, you can use xpadder to do that. You can enable a button on your controller to toggle whether the right mouse button is pressed down or not.
DC Universe Online is not a totaly epic game ,but has a controller option so it should be possible. You still use the keyboard for stuff like typing ,and what not. Everything else is done with the controller ,and it worked. I don’t mind using a keyboard & mouse yet I do relax better being able to sit back with a controller. I don’t see this game getting controller support mostly due to the people who will hate on it for the sake of being hateful. If some how it happens fine I’ll give it a try. After all those who don’t like it don’t have to use it.
