When I play, I jump between harvesting Orichalcum nodes in one area, Platinum nodes in another, then some Copper and Iron in WvW. It would be nice if the inventory icons for the different gathering tools were colour-coded or otherwise labelled; the only way to see the difference between say, a Copper Mining Pick and an Orichalcum Mining Pick is to mouse over them in inventory. I feel that it would be a simple change to label a tier of gathering tools a certain colour and change their icons to make it easy to see at a glance what tools players have. Thoughts?

One of those suggestions that is a no brainer, but will probably never be implemented for whatever reason.

Agreed. I only have Copper and Iron on any of my characters thus far since I’m leveling 5 characters at once and none have reached high enough to go into areas with better stuff, but I can definately see it being a hassle once you get 4 different harvesting equips per type. Don’t even need to actually make custom icons for each (though it’d be nice), just apply a simple color filter over them.

So we have 6 regular types of tools and 2 ‘odd ducks’.

Copper
Iron
Steel
Darksteel
Mithril
Orichalcum

And then there’s the Black Lion and Master versions.

Hmmm… Guess they could go White, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red (and Purple?). Not sure if Black Lion allows the gathering of all nodes as the tooltip is pretty hazy on that and the Master is a bit of an oddity as some can mine as Orichalcum where others can only mine as if they were only Steel.

At any rate, ArenaNet could theoretically apply their rarity-spectrum and apply the colors to the name. But then you’d still need to hover over the icons in order to find the right one.

Unless they change the icons slightly to include a colored border
