Get Rid Of Servers
Are you sure there’s no technical reason for keeping them separate?
provide a service that I’m willing to purchase.” – Fortuna.7259
I think that the district system of GW1 had elements we could learn from here – you could freely move between “districts” (essentially a numbered series of overflows to those who didn’t play – they also had regions but you could change that). I might add that I do rather miss the EU existing in this game…their servers were friendly the few times I guested before they were removed from existing to us. The district system could reincorporate them…which would make for an actual 24-hour community.
Are you sure there’s no technical reason for keeping them separate?
As far as I’m aware, the only technical reason (and people have asked) was for the EU servers…they actually segregated their character data from other regions at some point after release (as in, they were once a part of the community and now they’re banished because they technically don’t exist to us nor us to them as it is now configured post-change).

I don’t. I’m not sure why we would want 300 000 LA overflows. It wouldn’t make people run around Snowden any more or less than they do now.

Clearly OP is from the future where they have servers that can handle the load of hundreds of thousands of concurrent players.

Every time I find myself adding new names to my Block List in game, I realize seconds after that I’m on Overflow. Your suggestion would pretty much make that permanent.
I chose Tarnished Coast for a reason – both for who I’d be playing with, and who I wouldn’t.
The technical reason are the fact that a server can only handle a finite amount of players. In GW1, there were “Districts”, which were basically different servers handling X amount of players per District.
GW2 is an open world MMO. There’s only enough space per map to handle roughly 100 players at a time. I’m basing that estimate off of our TTS’s Guild Teq runs. One you reach the max, you get pushed into an Overflow, which is another server alltogether.
It could technically be possible to merge all servers into a single one, but that would mean we’d be playing a Dos based text game (no graphics), like old school BBS MMOs. If you’re too young to know about these, think of pen and paper RPGs. Or playing NES Final Fantasy, with only words and numbers on the screen.
I think you guys may be misreading what I wrote. In no way am I suggesting that thousands of players will be in one zone at any given time.
The system for this exists now & is in use as we speak. Assuming we’re using 100 players as a limit then around 80ish players (soft cap) the game would create a new overflow and that overflow would be filled. This would prevent the issues we currently have where either zones are empty cause it is possible atm to have low population main servers or you would have an unlucky chance of being thrown into an empty overflow should you be in a high pop server/zone.
This suggestion simply means that players would almost guaranteed to be in a mid population or higher server regardless of where they go.
Sooo what are you going to do about WvW?
Man, if we’re going to be offering suggestions that are shorted-sighted why don’t we suggest that Anet run GW2 off Cryengine or something absurd

So what about WvW? Would need a bit of an overhaul on how this would be setup. Perhaps have everyone’s server be changed to their “team”. Technically almost nothing would need to be changed here. Guesting would be a largely useless function as we could simply use the current feature of right clicking your party member’s name & switching to their “overflow”. Instead of Server Transfers in which ANet makes money on they could simply change it to Team Change.
Er… Did you not read my post? Or did you not like the suggestion about WvW? Not so sure what is short sighted since nothing actually changes when it comes to WvW but if there is something you find inherently wrong with that particular point then I wouldn’t mind a counter suggestion.
And honestly I don’t understand why you needed to be so rude about it.
Personally, I like the server community. It takes awhile to get to know some of the residents, to recognize names and guilds with the few hundred we have. I just can’t imagine doing that with thousands.
Also, I’m not sure how inviting chat would be with the rival WvW ‘teams’ all mingled together in one spot. At least, on our own servers we know we are all ‘playing’ for the same team.
I think Server pride is a good thing, but I may be part of a small minority.

His idea is that by filling up the servers progressively, it would make areas more populated.

He wants to see “endless versions of zones” instead of the single servers we have now. That could and would lead to massive numbers of overflows for various maps. I don’t like that idea so I don’t agree with it.

His idea is to consolidate all the people in the same area across all servers so that areas that are sparsely populated will be vibrant with people once again.
In fact, we would likely see fewer servers instead or more overflows.
I read it as that he wants to get rid of servers. No servers, all overflows. Yes, you will always run into people and that isn’t a bad thing. Not always a bad thing, anyway. But I like being on a single server where I can hide in a quiet zone if I want to have some me time. Plus there’s other reasons I don’t like the idea much but we can stick with that one.
