I tried searching the forums for a similar idea, but search returned nothing, and I didn’t find any topics that looked similar in the first 10 pages of topics.

The Problem: Our guild (and I assume others as well) will often run smaller groups of people (10-12) to perform support roles away from the main commander zerg (flipping camps, bolstering defenses, harassing enemy positions, etc). Having more than one commander tag in a map generally causes confusion for the vast majority of Pugs, so our guild commanders won’t tag up in these circumstances. This makes keeping track of that leader difficult in battle. We’ve come up with the band-aid solution of putting a target on the commander (ctrl + left click) but that drops when you are too far away, you can’t see it on the map, and it means we can’t call out other targets without losing the one on the leader. These guild commanders also don’t get the benefits of squads unless they are tagged up.

Proposed Solution: Either add functionality to current commander tags so that they can be made invisible to non-representing individuals, or create a second type of commander tag that is only visible to representing guild members. This second type could even be paid for with guild influence and assigned to members by the guild leaders.

Optional: Squad sizes for guild-visible tags could be limited to smaller numbers in order to promote smaller unit tactics over zergs.

Benefits:
1 – Allows groups of guild members to keep track of their leaders in the middle of hectic battles.
2 – Permits smaller groups to roam without attracting scores of pugs. Wherever someone is tagged, pugs are sure to follow. That isn’t always a good thing.
3 – Gives commanders access to tag benefits (supply counts, etc) without them having to be tagged up globally.
4 – Promotes GvG battles naturally. By facilitating better options for guild WvW, more guilds may opt to run this way instead of just hanging with the zerg. This will hopefully lead to more small-scale WvW battles which I have seen a lot of people wanting on the forums.
5 – Can be used to hinder spying. Everyone has their list of suspects on their servers. This could be used to hide commander movements more effectively.

That’s what I’ve been thinking. Constructive comments/suggestions welcome.

Great idea also as in addition to perks for commanders remove the chat suppression. They have to talk a lot as is it’s not fair they get suppressed by the chat system and not allowed to talk.
