Guild Perk: WvW Commander
Sea of Sorrows NA
One commander for every guild? That seems like a lot of commanders.
Is your guild so disorganized you don’t have for multiple commanders?
Even a 10-man guild can easily have 1 commander. Many guilds have 500 members, that’s easily 50 commanders.
Every 10 days.
Your suggestion is basically: Give bad guilds a commander.
No.

As opposed to 100g = commander?
There shouldn’t be server commanders in the first place, or possibly limit it to the one commander with the largest guild behind him.

100g is perfectly fine and certainly better than another free commander per guild.
Commander only for largest guild? Anything else? How about just allowing largest guilds from each server into WvW? Who needs others. It seems just as reasonable and “logical”.
guilds should be able to have a commander, though it should only be visible to their guild members, and a different coloured icon.

Right so, I’ve post the message below before on an exact same board 2 days ago.
Thanks for bringing up this topic again.

Ok I’m coming back to this conversation and I’m going to quickly reply on the topic of Commanders should be guild based.
That is a horrible and nasty idea.
There are Guild Commanders on NSP who have no clue how to properly Command (They gained the title by spamming invites and constantly asking people for donations).
But because they have a zerg of guildies to mindlessly follow them around they seem to think they are amazing. And even try and talk down other more regular Commanders such as myself.
Good Commanders do no require a guild with everyone inside a vent to conquer a map. Good Commanders can pull every last random from every last corner of the map into their zerg and co-ordinate them as if you’ve just written down step by step instructions.
Thats is what it means to be a decent Commander, to unite the server under one figurehead and lead them on.
Not to have some pure breed guild trash stomping around and pushing other players out of WvW, any half active guild can have 200k Influence faster than 100G. Easy fact.

Wait, guilds are not able to have a commander?
Are we talking here about PvE chit-chat guilds or WvW guilds which are supposed to be war machines? If your guild cannot afford multiple commanders in 3 months of gameplay, then it certainly does not deserve commander title. The guy can’t even command his guild mates.
I’m sorry but this is a joke. I sent 1g the other day to Xaoc leader even though I’m not even in their guild. And 1g is nothing. If your guild has members contributing nothing to the guild, you don’t deserve a commander in WvW. Just because you have a guild doesn’t mean it’s anything more but a collection of lone-wolf pugs. I’ve seen plenty of those guilds in GW1. 20 people online, every single one doing something solo in PvE.

Nice work not reading. Having a guild commander would help rallying a guild. It would effect no one out side of the guild. I think it’s a great idea.

Yes, if they have the most people, they should be entitled to leadership roles on the server.
I think the whole commander system is kitteny, and thats coming from a commander. It should either be guild based, as in, only people in the guild can see it, OR it should be elected in some manner, which is not likely to happen. I’m on a low population server and we already have too many commanders for 4 maps. I couldn’t imagine what it’s like on SBI or SOS right now.

This has been suggested previously and is a great idea as long as it’s only visible and useable to a guild. The guild commander should only be visible to players representing that guild.
Great for coordinating guild events and running as a guild in WvW, but will not disrupt the balance of current commanders nor nullify the 100gp spent to attain them.
Commander and squad could be so much better if they actually implemented some of the feedback from BW1.
I think commanders should be a pay when you use system. The price shouldn’t be money, it should be guild influence or badges.
Guild commander is nice idea. Visible only for guild mates, with squad forming tools. Good for wvwvw (when some guild want to take and defend some tower) or even in pve for fun jumping puzzles, meta events etc.

Honestly, no.
I know PvE focused guilds, which go into “WvW” at times, with their entire guild, eat queue space, and get nothing accomplished. Heck they don’t even communicate with other guilds or non guilded members on the map they play in.
I’d rather not see them with the option to have free commanders for guilds, due to many guilds being the same way.
As for making it only visible to guild members. In a honesty if the guild is so disorganized you don’t know what to do, how to lead, where to go without a “commander icon” then it probably shouldn’t be located in WvW.
“Invincibility lies in the defence; the possibility of victory in the attack.” Sun Tzu
Guild may have 3-4 regular commanders, but if they are not online when needed, or want to play a different character… what then? It would be nice to have a guild commander “buff” from influence that you can assign to someone in the guild.
As long as it’s only visible to guild members I can’t see how this would bother anyone outside the guild.
I don’t know that 100g is the BEST way to give commander status, but I like that better than giving commander status to guildies.
Commanders are meant to rally the troops on the map so that people looking for action know where to go, not help guilds stay together.
When are people going to figure out there’s a war going on?
The Commander thing is stupid all together, 100g for an icon to make people think you can lead? I have seen better players who can lead without the icon then 95% of “commanders” with the icon.
It should be a research item.
The research should give whoever activates it the Commander icon for 24 hours.
2500 influence, 24 hour research time.
Large guilds will be able to run several commanders at the same time while still buying other things. Small guilds will have to pick and choose but should be able to afford a full time commander. Solo people will not be able to farm up 100g and be a commander forever with no followers.
A game that’s 100% WvW

I don’t agree with commander as a guild perk.
However, I think it would be very useful to have ‘leiutenanents’ able to make small raid groups. Not visible on map but with a raid interface so that in-guild its easier to run/manage multiple groups.
This I think instead would be a suitable guild perk.

I dissagre about guild commanders, but guild squads should most deffently be a researchable feature!

Guild commander or Guild sqaud… both should only be seen or useable to the guild. either way some kind of system needs to be in place for multiple guilds to group. The commander and squad system is not currently designed for helping guild groups organize… it’s designed for people to lead zergs.
I like this idea, my guild has tried to get me the commander book although I always send the gold back. It would be one thing if the command icon had a toggle that would do the following.
A) Turn it on/off for the realm.
b) Turn it on/off for the guild
Their are times I wouldn’t mind leading, other times when I wouldn’t mind leading my guild mates and times I just want to be left alone to have fun.
I support this idea as long as it is Guild Commander. Meaning if the person is in your guild they can see the commander, if they aren’t they can’t.
It allows guilds to organize amongst themselves, without interfering with anyone outside the guild. It also offers some interesting posibilities with a full blue commander. If he fills his squad with guild commanders of various guilds they could provide a lot more organization.

|Deadeye|Warrior|Herald|Daredevil|Reaper|Spellbreaker
Would also be nice if the guild could choose the color of their commander icon. Since it would be guild only, this would make it easier to locate and coordinate.

Bingo! Now if only all the arenanet devs thought like that….

You explained exactly how I’ve felt at times. There is a need for different setups at different times…. but we don’t have the tools to do that.

Do they um never mind….hey devs I bet the op wouldn’t even mind if you took credit for the idea.
I totally love this idea. I also wish we could do it for guild events. So tired of NOT being able to all show up as a guild on the mini map for our Tuesday Night Map Clears. It’s frustrating for officers and members alike. Guilds need more love. If you let us form guilds, and let us all get loot from kills beyond our party sizes, how do you expect us to all see each other in PvE? In WvW, what’s the point of being in a guild if you can’t see your guild members? You are basically telling us that following random commanders is more important, or that we can’t just be casual WvW players unless we want to spend 100 gold.
id love to see the commander tag related to guilds in some way (like… WvW killcount at a certain amount = one commander… more commanders = higher amount of kills needed for next one) but not a ‘free’ commander for every guild
id also LOVE for commander tags to only appear in wvw, was in cursed shore the other day with 5 commander tags… was infuriating

It’s about flexibility, right now there is none. There are a couple different ways they can allow a system to be used for WvW and PvE and tailored for each guild.
- Take the current Commander & Squad system and be able to flag it “private”. No one else on the map can see the commander pin, and, like now, people in the squad can see only their commander pin.
- Have a “guild commander” upgrade. Researched using guild influence. Allows anyone in the guild to be a commander that is only visible to guild members. Can be used for WvW or PvE.
- Have a “guild commander” upgrade. Researched using guild influence. Allows anyone in the guild to be a commander that is only visible to guild members. Can be used for WvW or PvE.
the problem with that is that all the influence used could be gained from PvE… so the guild (and by extension; chosen commander) wouldnt be well experienced in WvW

I could be wrong but I believe that influence is effected by the amount of XP that a guild brings in? You get XP in WvW from killing guards, NPC mobs, gathering, taking objectives… I don’t think that should be an issue.

PvExclusive guilds could get a commander without stepping foot in wvw (which is why i dont like the current implementation; 100g can be earned outside of WvW… even if they changed it to badges it wouldnt be a clear indicator – because someone could just run the JP a ton of times – i got 500 for my gift through just the EB JP; though now i like WvW… the time:badge ratio of the JPs compared to the Time:badge ratio is so unbalanced its unbelievable…)

I think it would be difficult, at this stage of the game to implement any significant change in how the commander is aqquired. Unless they somehow refunded every single commander 100gp and based it off WvW achievements. But then you would be basing commanders off of who has more playing time and gains more achievements… not who’s actually better suited to lead.
I think they should simply allow anyone to form squads, but only allow the commander pin to show when they have a certain number of people in the squad. For example:
- Once the squad size hits a certian size…. say 10-20 people (2-4 groups) the commander pin can be activated to show on the map. People aren’t going to join squads if the commander is completely incompetent. You’d have people actually joining squads now, and the commander who’s best suited to lead will have a pin up.
This would also give guilds a way to group up over 5 people if they don’t want to lead the zone as a commander.
Just tossing ideas out there.
