Hammers are too small
Grew up playing much less realistic MH-style weaponry i see…
Its a visual effect so ok, but increasing it might block FoV quite a bit especially being regularly locked to the back of your character and needing to see forward.
Isle of Janthir
Learn my name, or do not. The world will know it soon enough.
or rather make the greatswords smaller as they are ridiculously “anime” while the rest of weapons are more or less realistic – I mean, look at the NPC Charr Vigil, those Greatswords are plain silly.
Some hammers are in a good spot. Others though look like you could almost mistake them for a staff.
Agree about the swords, I totally hate anything acociated with animes/mangas, especially the huge swords and the way some characters are holding them
You think hammers are small?
You seen short bows?
They’re like toy bows.

Not sure how this is an issue, there’s scaling based on races already. The already exaggerated greatswords do not block out your entire screen, not sure how a slight increase in hammer sizes would cause an issue.
Some of the hammers in this game are even shorter than staves, most are them are sticks with a small pebble attached. Most of them feel like croquet mallets if anything.
I’m not dreaming of hammers the size of skyscrapers, but this is also a fantasy mmo, it’d be nice if a two-handed weapon did feel slightly larger than life. Of course, this is all a subjective thing and different based on one’s tastes.
I don’t like the giant anime style weapions either, but I do agree that hammers are mostly too small. I love the traditional Claymore styled Greatsword, the size of this is perfect in game and I wish there was a Hammer to match.
I would prefer all the silly wide and oversized weapons were changed to something more realistic. Hammers are already way too large for even a stretch of reality.
Have you seen the lionguard hammer? That looks smaller than a normal sledgehammer. If you want to talk reality then at least keep them somewhat in proportion with the other weapons. There’s no way you’d choose that over the white starter greatsword if you had to choose a weapon to fight with, based in reach alone.
I like the size of the Greatswords :-P Zweihänder’s could be up to 180cm (almost 6 feet) and those are ACTUAL swords.. so don’t think large outlandish swords are unrealistic… They are MEANT to be that big… even in reality. They are called “Greatswords” for a reason. If you don’t like it, use a regular sword… I enjoy my sword/sword or sword/shield :-P Also, yes, hammers should be a little bigger sometimes… maybe the maul shouldn’t be the size of the character’s body but perhaps a little larger than they are now in some cases would be nice.
here are some REAL greatswords from history and i cannot see any kind alike “cricket bat” style hideous, large and stupid greatswords.

A sledgehammer is huge compared to what was used historically. I agree proportion to the other weapons in the world is also a factor to consider. However, I think they all need toning down in head size, width, length, etc.

Agreed. The average dagger in GW2 is the size of a standard issue Roman soldier’s sword. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladius
A bit of exaggeration is fine in a fantasy game, but in GW2 there’s definitely a mismatch between the size of swords and the size of most other weapons.
The daggers I am fine with because it’s about being able to actually see the weapon. But a roman soldier would not be happily using a gladuis in a war, it was all about the spear.
Which btw I kinda wonder why there is no polearms usable on land. A spear is the most ancient weapon, most signs point to the first, and yet we can only use one when we go for a swim?
beg your pardon? the Gladius was a standard weapon for Roman infantry in addition to polearms.
The hugest versions of the Zweihänder was either a ceremonial weapon (eg. used in parades) or it was used like a polearm in formations, not like a sword at all. Even those were really long, but did not have the ridiculous girth associated with anime weapons. I do not demand weapons to be 100 % historically acurate in a fantasy game, but just look at the claymores scaled to the large races´ sizes. They would cause even the strongest Charr/Norn to fall over the moment they lifted them off the ground. The hammers are fine, it is not about the size of the mallet, but the length of the handle (angular acceleration and what not). A huge mallet would make a hammer totally uncontrollable in combat.
To Rizzy:
Your definition of “toy bow” needs some clerification. I knew a bowyer once, he created a bow that was no thicker than a popsicle stick and could launch an arrow down about 50 yards with absolute leathal accuracy and penetrate enough to actually put an arrow right through a body. The thing was no longer than two and a half feet.
A short bow is exactly that a short bow, no more or less effective.
Also to everyone else, you all must use norn characters or even charr, the size of the weapons scales with the characters size. Create and asura warrior and all your complaints about greatsowrds being too big will disappear.
I would definitely like to see Hammers look less like staffs.
My hammer look like a small shovel with jewelry on it and I do not think it is intended.
Yes I know a gladuis was standard issue, much like a bayonet was standard issue for riflemen. Which do you think they preferred using.
The point is range, like someone just said, maybe its just cause the picture in my mind is a charr, but using a hammer on him the thing looks shorter than a baseball bat. I know both the GS and hammer have the same range, but visually it looks like I have to stand on top of an enemy to connect with them.
a roman soldier would not be happily using a gladuis in a war, it was all about the spear.
He might not be happy, but he’d still use his gladius in close combat.
He certainly would not be happier if the sword would be larger.
erm, Roman soldiers didn´t march in formation holding a tower shield all day, mind you…
It’s so funny how people mock the desire for outlandish weapon art and effects. As if liking more realistic and mundane art makes one a more sophisticated, mature player.
The bigger, outlandish and sparkle the better. It’s fun.
Hammers are also hung the wrong way. It doesnt make any sense for the head of the hammer to be up over your shoulder, all that weight would be uncomfortable.
Legionnaires is fairly bulky

I disagree, I think it’s more comfortable having weight over the shoulders.
Right? I’m glad someone else agrees with me. I was pumped when I saw The Juggernaut as it looks like it has some heft to it, but attaining a Legendary will take awhile. And yes, let’s harp on about weapon realism in a game where we fight dragons and can wield magic. Why not have both styles? Variety is the spice of life.
I agree with the OP. Plus, if hammers looked like this, it would be a lot more desirable.
That is a bit on the ridiculous size, how does one even reasonably carry that on his/her back. I think skyrim has the size down good, they seem to be just a bit bigger than gw2 hammers but not oversized.
