The majority of rage concerning the Ranger tends to be the pets lack of survivability due to generally stupid AI. I wanted to throw out a suggestion that would make the Pet immensely more effective in combat.

Consider replacing the F1 and F2 and F3 commands with a function that actually allows you to move the pet via targeted location/more effectively give it attack commands. It would make the class much more challenging to play but would add much needed survivability to the pets – being able to micromanage their location and thereby move them out of AOE or out of enemy attack range.

F1 could be “Order Pet To Move To Targeted Location” or “Order Pet To Defend Targeted Location”
F2 could be “Order Pet To Attack Target”
F3 could be “Order Pet To Follow”
F4 could be the pet’s special skill.

If players are using the suggested setup it would make the class much more difficult to play as, but it would make them more survivable and effective in PvP/WvWvW. It would also make build completely dedicated to pet skills and traits completely viable. There would have to be a range limit on how far away the pets can go, but I would believe that up to 2000 or 2500 range would be optimum.

not really needed… the only advantage i see you suggesting is incorporating a worse… i cant recall what the shout is called… ‘guard’?

f1 is already attack target (i nearly always have my pet set to passive; so always manually tell it to attack)
f2 pet skill (why move it to f4? when players are already familar with it)
f3 is return to me (that attentive rangers actively use to aid their pet – moving them out of AoEs)

this change isnt really needed..

Make the thing actually work, and not die in 5 seconds flat, that would be a start.

pay more attention to it (f3…)?
invest in beastmastery (+300 to all stats at 30… although i only use 10)?
use tankier/ranged pets (devourer fits both)?
