Hurricane Sandy Relief: A Dynamic Event
55 people have already died from this. I know in the grand scheme of things that doesn’t seem like much, but if you were one of those 55 families you would understand.
69 people died before it even hit America. I am not saying it is not an awful event. It is just that perhaps other areas of the world could use that money more, because they do not just have a deficit they have money at all.
I do not think that in game events are really the best way to work towards a money raising goal. They make people think they have helped when in fact they have done nothing. People need to actually give money themselves to causes they believe in rather than hoping for companies to do it for them.
I also believe Arenanet have shown responsibility for charity events. Even in small events I have heard of some of their employees taking part in a charity cycle ride. I am sure if they feel this is something they want to support they will do so with no need for in-game involvement, as after all does that not set a precident? Every horrific disaster being represented in game, a place people go to escape the world. Or should it just the ones that effect the USA?
Even if my first comment was harsh I still no not think this sort of thing is actually beneficial.
The japan earthquake/tsunami had 230 times more casualties than the hurricane, if there’s ever a donation it should go to them.
You definitely have a point there. And i was actually not aware that there were others affected by this outside of the US. I thought it was a hurricane that started in the ocean and made its way to us. The difficulty of living in America is that our media often has a narrow scope of things and only focuses on itself.
The only reason that i brought this up now is because this is the first disaster to happen while GW2 has been around. (i didnt play GW1, so i dont know its dynamics).
And in response to it making people think they have done something, when they have done nothing. That is precisely why people can make donations through the gem store. Its honestly no different than McDonalds saying “for every purchase of a big mac, 5 cents will go towards such and such a fund”. Do people actually think they’re making a difference? No. Its McDonalds that is making that difference. They were going to buy that big mac anyways.
And i would also like to point out that America is not some stingy country that doens’t help out other countries when they need it. There are SO many humanitarian efforts out there that stem from America that are always helping out. Also, dont forget about the 950 billion dollars that were sent to help in the relief of the Tsunami in India of 2005. And that was just from our government alone. That isn’t considering all the other American based companies and humanitarian efforts that made substantial donations.
However. The response to this topic is definitely turning more in to a political one than a simple idea to help people in need. If you think its a bad idea, then consider it as such. If not, do the same. But no argument needs to continue because its counter-productive. Neither of our opinions will sway the ultimate decision of Anet.
