Like the post says. I want to duel. I don’t care where or how it’s implemented. Frankly I’m not clear on why it isn’t already in game. Spvp is great an all, but seriously. I want a way to 1v1. I’ve tried doing this in random pvp with friends only to have some jerk snipe a killing blow and then do a finisher.

At the very least, a section of the mists for dueling would be pretty cool since there is a very training friendly vibe going on there. A way to duel w/the pve version of my toon would be utterly amazing as well. Since you know, that’s who I WvWvW with.

TBQH; Any city worth it’s salt would have a fighting pit in it.

i’ve been saying this since day one! some people don’t want it for some reason? people have told me “if you want to pvp just do pvp or wvw!” but what they don’t realize is i like being competitive with my friends that i pve with out in the world.

its very sad that they didn’t think about this, its a mechanic you already see in-game with npcs where they are able to switch from friendly to unfriendly

I really don’t understand why it isn’t a feature. If some people don’t want it that’s fine. They don’t have to accept the duel.
If that really all that’s keep it from going in game, then just make the request to duel something like this:

So-an-so wants to duel you!
_accept! _decline. _block duel requests from So-an-so

Additionally they could make specific places where you can duel. So, if you don’t like dueling then well, don’t go there.

I think I heard a rumor that there would be open world dueling added post release so I hope that it will be in game sooner than later. Maybe there can be a UI toggle to turn dueling requests off if there really are people who don’t want to bother with it.

As with every other thread of this nature I have seen, I don’t care. So long as they add the option to turn off requests. As for seeing players kicking the kitten out of each other in Lion’s Arch, I can’t say I’m a fan, but I’ll live with it just to have these threads stop.

I would love to see this feature, it would help us greatly to teach friends to pvp and learn new professions in a more relaxed way and with real people not dummies!
Please implement this feature, I understand people don’t like it, just add an option to block requests, and allow it only outside the cities or in the Mists.
Otherwise private sPVP for the group or something like that,

I would also like to see dueling. Last night my friend and I stayed up WAY too late trying to get in an empty sPvP match that would start with just the two of us so we could duel. I’ve often used dueling as a more interactive way to test things out. You know, a “let me see if this build can beat you now” type of thing. Plus, it’s fun.

I am all for preferences where you can choose to 1) automatically refuse all duel requests or 2) automatically refuse all duel requests if not friend-ed or grouped with requester. I have experienced the pushy strangers that spam dueling requests and probably would enable option “2” myself if it existed.

I can also see how it might break immersion in cities. I would fully support an option of dueling only in the Mists, outside of city limits, and designated areas in cities like fighting pits, if that is the concern. The Bane seems like a good area in the Black Citadel.

I would like to see 1v1 duelling in PvE and/or PvP (WvW) zones.

How
Right click player, choose “Request Duel”. If the recipient of the offer accepts, both players become immune to all damage from all other players, but not from mobs or the environment.

Fighting in cities should be allowed, but after a few seconds should be interrupted by the Lionguard! (Hence, no fighting in cities)
Simple.

You can already duel go into the mists pic a empty room with a few of your friends and take turns dueling. Yes others may come in the room but you just have to tell them your dueling and most will join in. /map is seen by both teams for this reason im sure.

IMHO i think that duelling is not a good idea because there are many builds that you cant counter in 1v1

people will start kittenin about how unfair this is, to nerv this and that and of course to buff their own class so they will become invincible…

im sure that its allready to late for my 2 cents but just think about it!

Duelling is fine if it is in an arena where people who want it can go to knock the stuffing out of each-other if they want.

It is not fine in PVE- I have seen too many cases of people who think they are cool camping spawn point and killing players as they spawn and thinking it is a blast (a friend of mine did this in Aion)

I think that is probably the only thing that would drive me away from this game.

If you want to duel fine- just keep it away from the people who just want to play the game.

I’m glad someone else understands why I want the option to ignore duel requests.

As for dueling in cities, make it so! Put an arena in, Arena Net :P! Maybe only in Lion’s Arch if you don’t want to put one in every city. Heck, charge some copper for “seats” (i.e. let people spectate if they want to). Shoot, maybe even allow some wagering (copper/silver/gold) with odds based on the win/loss record of each character.

Let the duelists pick different environs, or even a random one, including under water.

For right now I just want a way to 1v1 w/a friend guildie. It’s good practice to spar. After all that’s what martial artists call it. Sparing.

Though it’d be really cool to see em go the extra mile and put a dueling area in each city with an arena that matches the art style and theme of that race/area. Possibly for flare change up the rules for each zone. Not having waypoints for these areas would add to the underground flavor.

Examples:
Lions Arch. A barge/boat hidden or openly in the bay. The ring/arena would be mostly flat and the mechanics of the duel would basically be till first one downed. Instead of finishing the guy like in pvp, you rez them from the downed state like normal. It would be pretty cool if the boat could be hidden in cove in the day time and actually be out in that massive bay at night. Could also have a section of the boat be underwater if people wanted to duel like that too.

Rata Sum: The Thundersphere. It would require a small bit of platforming to get to, and it would be high up in the air, the ring would have an electrical dome that would keep people from falling off. Except that, the dome will intermittently fail. So if you fall off you fall for good. You could even be knocked off by random gusts of wind and or player knock backs. Since it’s in city limits this wouldn’t damage your gear or cost money to way point. Or you could just spawn the player back at the start of the platforming. As for the duel it’s self, like above first player downed loses and no finisher, instead they turn green and can be rezzed, or even auto rezzed. (like the profession npc’s in the mist.)

Divinity’s Reach: It’s be in the basement of a pub called something like Louie’s Tavern, there would be an NPC named Brad Durden, Or Tyler PItt or some such, and he’d explain the rules, and that it’s a place or even, a club if you will, for fighting. Again, non-leathal dueling. Fist player downed lost the duel, and then can be rezzed from the downed state. I think for this one it’d actually add flavor to leave the lose in the downed state, so everybody else can scrape him off the floor. I’m pretty sure I saw movie like this… Could even have NPC spectators that rez downed players.

Hoelbrak: It could somehow feature the son’s of svanir. They could boo and jeer, throwing objects at you and such. Maybe even have thin ice patches that break and put you underwater? Or It could take place in a mead hall and have environmental weapons.

The Grove: Sylvari don’t mess around. They have dueling in their personal story, and it’s mentioned a few other times in their lore. They duel to the death. The ring would be simple and plain. No distractions no gimmicks. Just a 1v1 fight to the death downed state and finishers. The whole kit. The defeated player would simply be rallied right out side the duel rink with no penalty to his gear or his pocket book. Just the burning shame of defeat.

The Black Citadel: I’ve heard char talk about gladitor’s. I’ve Talked to Char gladiums, yet I’ve yet to see anything other than talk. “ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?” I suggest an arena that is also a fight to the death, but here there are random factors. An ever changing battle ground that has flames burst from seemingly nowhere, tigers that jump out of pits, spike traps, and rowdy char spectators that boo/cheer. They could also throw flowers or food at you. It would be really funny to have a legionnaire npc that hosts the thing challenge somebody who wins a certain number of times in a row to a duel, and then bribes you to lose, or you always lose cause it’s rigged. Or even better you get stuck w/an environmental weapon called “dulled blade”

And finally,
The Mists: More than anyplace mentioned above the mists would benefit from a place to duel. It would be it’s own training area, and the it’d basically work the exact same way as when you fight one of those profession npc’s. Having an Olympic sized pool for dueling wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

So? They do this anyway. Dueling wouldn’t change that. IF anything, not having a spec for 1v1 and purposefully fighting 1v1 would do nothing but make you better at it. It’s still good practice.

Besides adding dueling to the game doesn’t force anybody to do it. As I said before, making a 3rd option to block the duel requests will cut down on somebody who is spamming. Or it could even be a UI toggle on/off.

Yep. Add dueling. Don’t worry about naysayers who cry about vague potential balance issues in the far future.

There are only two arguments against this feature which so many people want. One is easily resolved and the other is, in my opinion, not very rational.

1) people will get spammed with dueling requests
>add an option for the recipient player to turn off dueling so they cannot be spammed.
>profit

2) If dueling is added people might begin crying about class balance from a 1v1 perspective, which could influence the overall balance of the game. They don’t like this prospect.

>It’s not your job to balance the game, it’s Anets. Believe it or not, they don’t listen to everyone’s feedback and execute changes based purely on the playerbase’s opinion. They listen sometimes.. when we aren’t crazy.. but always with a grain of salt.

>Class balancing from this perspective is not an inherently wrong or evil thought. In fact, balancing perspectives from WvW, sPvP and 1v1 could add a more complete view of game balance in general.

>Ultimately, it doesn’t actually change the balance of the game, it only opens an avenue for players to comment on and developers to review. Only when developers take action is anything changed. You either trust Anet or you don’t at this point – they can ruin the game in plenty of other ways, dueling won’t be the magic bullet. Knowing this, there is no “good” reason to prohibit the feature.

Agreed. If anything, they should add dueling because it’s simply fun. But I like the point you made about 1v1 class balancing; I’m gonna take it a step further and say that balancing around 1v1 is the only proper way to balance.

In fact, enabling 1v1 duels could help expose skills, abilities, etc., that are overpowered or perhaps underpowered which would otherwise be obscured in the chaos of mass PvP.
