If People want to Farm give them Farms
Ignoring the holes in your suggestion, I’ll just point out that botters will simply make bots with image-recognition capabilities.
I’m okay with farming, as long as those things you can farm are accountbound on pickup and so no threat to the games economy.
Make that death costly enough to discourage bots but as long as the warning is ON SCREEN with maybe the Island turning dark green to warn off anyone approaching it then bots will not be able to adjust and get out. They cannot read on screen announcements, the have to rely on parsing the chat for that sort of information. especially if the announcement also moves around the screen at random.
Well, I’m sorry to pop your bubble but that’s plain and simple wrong. Reading screen announcements is rather easy.

Yea, your whole idea on the bots would fail instantly.
Lets go back a few years, there is a game called Runescape, it is very profitable to sell fake runescape money for real cash to people, the Asians figured this out and hired programmers to create bots to play Runescape for them. They have huge warehouses full of hundreds of computers that are taken care of by people they can pay pennies.
These bots have become so advance that you can basically do anything you want in that game with a program, I’m not going to go to far into detail but you really can program scripts to do anything in that game.
If Anet allows farming in this game the Asians will do the same thing with Guild Wars and nothing Anet tries will be able to stop them from scripting around it. If you put some random box on the screen telling people to leave or whatever it would take them 2 minutes to go rescript a way around it.
If you don’t want this game to be filled with bots, then there cannot be any easy farming methods.

I wonder when Anet will actively fight TP bots…my guess, never

I just don’t understand what is so precious about this in game economy, I look at the TP and it is completely kittened. 400% inflation since Nov.? any real economy would crash if that ever happened. Farming is not what is hurting the economy, buying gems with real cash and converting it to gold is what is hurting the in game economy cause it’s like printing more money making it worthless. That’s what drives all these prices to insane levels that most who just play the game can’t afford.

Oh how I wish they had a LOTRO farming system. That was the single best RNG system in the mmo world. I could farm mats for hours with that system. Their currency was REAL easy to get , you buy the seeds you separate the bad from good and you actually had a chance to get the rare materials alot!
It was real nice. sigh, those were the days when crafting and loot mattered.

I would not mind my own homestead where I can Harvest Moon it.
I don’t think botters care about armor or if their bots have anything on. They just need to tag mobs.
So let me get this straight then. They are going to restrict the game play of the majority of the people by restricting drops, nerfing farming areas, plus the DR in order to keep the minority, the bots at bay? This sounds counter-intuitive to how it should be. Unless of course the bots are the majority then it all makes sense.
Keep the bots away by making the game unplayable, that way there will be no bots… or players.
Or maybe make everything easy to find, and thus bots will have nothing to sell.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
A.. Hm… Friend of mine used to bot on Lineage 2.
His bot could pvp poorly skilled people, do long quests, sell and buy items, change spot of farming if needed, recognize a lot of situations (Player engaging in conversation, gm approaching, gm watching invisible, etc) and either do a pre-programmed response or let him know remotely.
He once did not log a character with the game client until he was approaching end level.
No, your solution wouldn’t work. Bots nowadays are the closest thing we have to beating Turing’s test :P

I’d like to see some proof that the majority of people actually likes to farm. In my book it’s rather the opposite, most people play MMOs with as little farming involved as possible, they only farm if they are forced to do it.

the funny thing is btw that union waypoint farm point is now fixed to no loot because of the complains of no farmers against farmers, but they didn’t even bother to fix the waypoint itself so when you use it you are stuck underground unable to move. you can blink if you are a mesmer, you use it (and so pay it) again if you are anybody else…
fix it already instead of thinking about loot and drop and farmers you lazy!!

Don’t like being wrong, eh?
Farming can be quite fun. I recently spent like a full afternoon planing a route that was perfect.
First I observed and tested the aggro leash range of mobs and got to know wich mobs I could pull together and where. Then I incorporated underwater routes for further pulling, then I examined wich spawns are dynamic (As in, the amount of mob depletes and spawns elsewhere until the lowest possible amount of mobs spawn there) and how to effectively give myself “Double spawns” on two of the spots on my route.
Then I got to do it and raged pretty bad once I realized that there is no point, hit diminishing returns in like five minutes. I honestly felt punished for playing smart. Guess I should limit myself to the awesome and epic boss battles, the hardest thing about them being getting there in time and not lagging like @&#!&* after camping a dumb timer on a website. After that it’s just autoattack and watch the epic boss die in a few minutes from all the skillspam.
Then I remembered the first time we took down Antharas, the earth dragon. It took us two weeks of planing and more than six organized parties of twelve players on teamspeak. We had to try different tactics until we could defeat him. Two weeks later, when he spawned again, we had to do it again, with the difference that our enemies where there and we had an epic battle that lasted over 4 hours, with skirmishes going all the way down the Lair of Antharas (A laberynthic, non instanced dungeon that could probably fit all GW2 dungeons inside it).
For me, the only PvE content that comes close to optimum farming in terms of fun is non-speed-ran dungeons, and dungeons are done mostly via exploiting and fullzerk warrior skillspam speedrun nowadays, can’t even find a group that is willing to play them. Hearts are certainly a tedious activity for me, as it’s exploring in a game where everything is spoiled through map markers and achievements and whatnot.
Jumping puzzles are awesome tho, and the little hidden places in the world would make exploration a very interesting option for PvE, if it only gave decent rewards…
The upcoming Crazed Karka Queen will be a test for anet, let’s see if they can make an interesting boss. If it’s killed via zerg autoattack spam it’s not interesting. Oh and please stop making announcements as if the Big Danger that is coming to southsun wasn’t already spoiled by achievements.

No, I’m not new to MMO and because of that I exactly know what I’m talking about. No matter which MMORPG you play there are always people that just claim something but don’t bother providing proof. They always seem to think that just cause they play the game a certain way everybody else does so too.
Farming may have been and integral component of each WoW clone, but that doesn’t mean that the majority of players actually likes the concept of farming.

I don’t mind doing a farm every now and again.
It isn’t something I would do every day but it is something I would do on occasion when I wish to slate some time to devote toward getting a legendary, gold, or mats toward general crafting professions.
Taking away farm spots from those of us that farm casually is a problem. I don’t do it very often but I do occasionally do a farm, mostly when I’m in the mood to kill a whole bunch of PvE mobs.
If I got what I needed exclusively from WvW in a reasonable amount of time, I wouldn’t care, but WvW drops suck balls, I’ve also noticed that I tend to get more bags with T6 mats than any other range, so I have to PvE and do dungeons to get gold and mats because the mats I need tend to be in the low to mid range to get me through crafting. I’ve been picking on the up leveled just to get a bag that gives me the mat that I need because the true level 80 players give the bag with the T6 mats. Drops still suck.
Some would say buy from the TP but then why should I if I had a place that I could farm. I don’t mind working for the stuff I need, I just don’t care to be penalized for working toward what I need to accomplish my current goal in a reasonable amount of time. Current goal is leather working, stuck at level 50 because I need more mats and I ran out of gold to put toward crafting because I would like to have enough for when I do go WvW, I can start a structure upgrade or get some siege so that I can also help my server harden a structure.

I agree. This game need farming back, or at least 90% of the player base will probably quit this game. Farming, imo, is one of the funnest things to do in MMO’s, and without it, you’re basically taking out the soul of the game.
I remember the best times I had with this game, farming at the Lyssa Union wp, spamming #1 guardian staff skills like crazy, watching some television on my other screen and eating pizza on the side, while getting some awesome loot in the process.
This type of fun is the type that people remember during the course of their whole lives, so please please add more farming spots. I cannot recommend this game to my friends and everyone I know otherwise.

That makes no sense. Money was no harder to come by back in Nov. then than it is now, in fact, it is harder now since they nerfed the rewards on a lot of things. Most of the T6 mats have more than doubled since then. So how am I getting then for twice as cheap?
To have a stable economy you can’t just keep printing money cause that drives inflation up. A lot of people with a lot of real cash are buying there in game gold via gems or risky black market vendors and that is what is driving the prices up. Meanwhile the others just playing the game and getting the same kittenty rewards or less than they always got are feeling the pain but everyone blames the farmers for screwing the economy.

What I find amusing is that everyone just goes along with the idea that there should even be a need to farm, instead of mechanics being implemented to naturally have players acquire what they need through normal game play.
People farm because Anet wants people to farm. Keeps people in game.
For those people that can afford to buy gems on a regular basis then farming is a non issue. However there are many students, retirees, people on fixed incomes that also play this game who can only afford to buy gems once in awhile, when the budget permits them to do so. So what do those people do? They farm and sell what they get to get the gold they need. Not everyone wants to run CoF 20 times a day just like not everyone wants to farm. Why is one choice being restricted?
And in the end that is what it is all about. Choice. If I choose to spend real money for gems, so be it. If I choose to farm instead why restrict it? I never farmed Union Station yet the one thing that bothers me with the fix is that even if you were running the quest through, you now get nothing whereas before you at least got something. They did not increase the final reward or compensate in any way for the loss of drops from that part of the quest so in essence they punished not only the bots but everyone.
It is getting to the point where you play the market (TP), run CoF ad nauseum or buy gems with rl money. They still however consider it a fair price to pay 40 laurels and 50 ecto for one piece of ascended gear.
If the game was loot-rich and the high end materials were plentiful and easy for everyone to acquire, what would become of the botters?

Two hours a day can get you a lot of gold for just playing the game.
For example, that’s a full clear of orr temples, 6-9 guaranteed rares with a chance for exotics.
If someone doesn’t have a lot of time to play, I doubt mindless grinding is what they will want to do with their limited time.
If the game was loot-rich and the high end materials were plentiful and easy for everyone to acquire, what would become of the botters?
My guess is many of them would disappear cause there would be no point to botting anymore.

On the contrary, if I have limited time to play I would rather go out and farm by myself. If I have plenty of time ahead of me that is when I will do events, etc. If a run on a temple goes south (like Grenth) I want to be able to have the time to try it again. I could not do that if my time were limited. As for clearing temples, it is difficult to do if nobody is running those events when you have the time to run them.
if I have limited time to play I would rather go out and farm by myself.
I personally would do a story mission, explore the world, finish a daily, do a few rounds of pvp or something. Only farming in a game without actually doing anything that the game has to offer seems a waste of time.
Well here is the thing. The wife and myself run our characters together through the story missions. I do not pvp although I do spend time in WvW. Since we have 9 characters each (6 are level 80) I spend the time when she is offline farming for materials to outfit all these alts. I put a game on on the television, turn my in-game volume down and farm away.
There is one spot that I farm on a regular basis when I have that time. In an hour there with 170% mf, I can get 120 of one type of tier 5 mat plus two or three rares. Sitting around waiting for enough people to run Lyssa or for a dragon to show up in my opinion is a greater waste of time. Even spending time looking for a group to run a dungeon/fractal will usually burn up 15 minutes or more. That is 15 minutes where I could be doing something. even if it is farming.
Now there is no way I am ever going to post where that spot is as it would get nerfed within a week so please do not ask!

I would agree, except that there is usually a reason to farm in this game. Most things here are quantifiable. Want the new stuff in the Gemstore/ new bank tab/ new character slot/more guild influence? X amount of gold turns into x amount of gems. Want that flashy new sword/bow/rifle/axe? Takes x amount of x material. Even with a focus on non traditional vertical progression, one of the ways to differentiate yourself in the game from everyone else is through a quantifiable attainment of certain items.
Much of what this game has to offer is directly available by farming. While true you can get these things over time slowly, if you have the time to spend why wait or not give yourself goals that are attainable. The mechanics are in game because Anet themselves put them there. And it’s a large part of human nature to strive to attain goals, it’s what we are taught from the cradle. The same way I can not fault a scorpion for stinging the fox/frog, I find it hard to fault humanity for following it’s nature.

You labor under the assumption that farmers are the majority of the population. Pretty much not the case. Farmers are a smallish part of the community. Most people just play the game.
You don’t hit DR unless you kill the same mobs over and over and over again. This is too boring for most people. It takes a specific mindset to do it….or a bot.

There are tons of angry farms. I’ve seen at least a dozen people posting that their farming is ruined. Many of those same people post in every single farming thread. I’ve seen just as many people saying that the game isn’t ruined and that farming is not what this game is about. So saying a dozen people are ticked off and posting all over the place is a far cry from most people.
The fact is, most people in this game probably just follow the meta events, and farm them. It’s clearly the way that Anet would want you to farm, being that they created an API which makes tracking events more accurate. And people do show up at these events.
Right now, there are people farming southsun. Why? Because there’s a 200% magic fine buff you can get for free that lasts 23 hours.
Anet doesn’t necessarily want people to farm Orr however. Orr is supposed to be a really tough end game zone and when people stay there running one route, it trivialized Orr completely.
New players get there and there’s just bedlam. You’re not a hero any more fighting through the hardest zone in the game. You’re a number trying to tag at target before it goes away so that you might get a drop from it.
If you think this is the way Anet wanted the game to go, I’m not sure what to say to you.

that’s the worst spelling that I’ve seen in a while.
Now why should I be thankful that you’re preventing legitimate players from making money? Game prices don’t change, but player prices do change. That means that when deflation happens game prices become too expensive, if inflation happens it does practically nothing, because everyone earn more.

Edit: There is also zero proof that Anet does not want people to farm, anecdotal or otherwise. While there is great anecdotal proof that they do. Temporary areas of certain mobs, the amount of mats needed for items, low drop rates, and the big one…magic find.

If you think this is the way Anet wanted the game to go, I’m not sure what to say to you.
so like i said before, are you expecting the chest to give you stack of t6 instantly?
collecting t6 itself take months and if u prefer to do it slow way, dont ask me to follow you. now who said that farming isnt legit. if they dont want any farming to happen, why bother spawning monsters in non event area. most people will surely do what rewards them the most. its like you want us to less profit.
if you wanna wait 1 hour for jormag to appear, let me use that 1 hour to farm and i can do jormag when it spawns
