All Professions got different mechanics, which makes them unique. The ranger one is the Pet. A mechanic that makes the Ranger himself do less them, because consider the pet as an extension of the Rangers damage. However, the pet AI just doesn’t simple work. Something must be done to improves it’s AI in order to make the rangers balanced or even work.
I would suggest taking the Skill “Protect me” from the utilities ranger skills, and putting into a new pet skills, bessdes the old ones. Like a “F3” skills, but with less duration of course. But that’s not only enough, the AI itself must be improved!
Chaging Traits or showing the number of the Pet’s hp is not what the ranger are in need.

Rangers used to be pretty good without a pet in GW1. Now they are completely reliant on them, and PVE seems down right hostile to pets. I’d like to know what the role of the ranger is supposed to be in PVE. I honestly haven’t a clue.

I agree with the OP. Because the ranger’s damage output relies so much on the pet, I think it’s important that the player has better control over it. In my opinion, pets should not be targeted by some melee/AoE abilities that a player would have evaded by running out of them. Pets are also a burden when they pull mobs/trigger traps (example: flowers in TA dungeon).

I understand that this might make pet regen less relevant in PvE so perhaps it is not applicable. It is however annoying to have your pet die due to factors you cannot control, especially when you are specced to rely heavily on your pet for damage.

Pets currently feel a little forced, you cannot even unsummon them in purpose (say for a fight mechanic) as they keep respawning when you enter combat. I know you can set them to “Avoid Combat” but they are still in the way, in a sense. :P

It would be nice if pet skills activated immediately. The next best thing would be if pet skills did not go on full kittening cooldown when I try to activate their skills immediately after I switch to them in combat.

Why this has not been implemented from the start makes no sense, and is a huge factor to why I avoid ranger in PvP. I’m sure others feel the same and demand to have this simple and core mechanic fixed. If only they would speak up in threads like this.

Team Deathmatch for PvP – Raise the AoE cap for WvW – More unique events for PvE
